This series of videos are about the reparation of the vintage Philips CD555 Sound Machine (Boombox) from 1985/86
How to check and set the currency on the Philips CDM2 mechanism. Always check the laster voltage if you bought a second hand item that was already opened. Sometimes "professionals" put up the voltage because it helps to successfully read the CD even when other components (capacitors) or dirty optics are used. High currency can destroy the laser quickly, check that the potentiometer is in the middle position before you switch on a device if you are unsure about the current currency level.

Something that I have come across when deep cleaning a CDM-0 (like in this video) by removing the screw and cleaning behind with q-tips: You should be very careful when screwing it back, so that it is centered, otherwise if it is a bit turned towards any side (left or right - people who have done it know what I mean), it will not work correctly, may not even be able to read the TOC, unless it is unscrewed and centered properly.

You are absolutely right. Thanks for the comment. Learned this in the meantime. Also the torque is important. Don’t know how many Newton but it’s also not working if you apply too much torque.

Do you think you can make a detailed, real time (normal speed) video on how to clean the lenses? I can't follow how you disassembled the top portion of the pickup because it is a "Fast Motion" video. I have the same pick-up on my Sylvania / Philips CD Player, and it doesn't play all disks, so I would like to try cleaning the lenses completely, but up to this point I can only clean the top of the lens.

Hi ya that was great to view. You know I can’t understand why someone with your abilities isn’t taking those great CD readers out of the old players and repurposing them as CD transports that connect to sh outside DAC. There will be a market for it for sure. Brands are still selling transports for thousands of dollars. 🤙 Ps are you German? Hope you saw Babylon Berlin on Netflix!!!!!❤️

Excellent video Daniela. I am having issues with a Marantz cd873 that has a CDM-2 Mech. The problem is when the disc is spinning there is a lot of noise generated. I have tried lubricating the plastic clamp that holds the disc down when playing but it sounds like the noise is coming from the motor or spindle possibly.

Hi Charlie, hard to tell without hearing the noise. Is it a kind of plastic grinding or a high whistle? Some CDM2 might start to whistle when playing upper tracks. Feel free to mail me an audio record...

@@daniela_spieler Hi Daniela thanks for your reply! I don't think it's a plastic grinding noise but think it may be the laser making the noise and it is noisier when reading the start of the CD than tracks near the end of CD.

Hi Charlie, I probably got some news on this. Recently I had a CDM2 producing a whining sound when played. Was able to remove the noise by putting silicone oil 100,000 cst as mentioned in the service manual onto the axle bearing. You can see one side of the axle bearing at @11:26 - the metal ball inside the notch. Maybe this helps?
