River, thank you for soldiering on in the face of the eventual. I've always enjoyed your videos, and I'm glad that someone was able to save many of the old channel's videos to the tribute channel. You couldn't know the joy in finding your new channel (this one) and seeing you resurrect all those old pieces of kit. I wish you peace and happiness (and maybe one more dressing down of the government - those bits always made me laugh). Thank you, again, esteemed colleage of the electronics world. Susannah, if you are the one River spoke of on his old channel, I'm glad to hear you were able to be a part of his life and bring him the happiness he (and we all) deserves. Thank you for being there for him.

I'm the one. If you like to buy any of the players he has fixed, he will be more than happy to give you a fair price.

I bought the N4308 around 1971 when I first got a job. Still got it and after servicing works. Usual problems are Main drive belt melts do a gooey mess after a while, take up spool looses friction due to felt clutch wear and pinch wheel can perish badly if stored in variable temperatures. Most parts still available online but cannot find a good replacement pinch wheel. Had to buy a whole unit that was not working and salvage what parts I could. I also have the stereo adaptor unit which turned the machine into a stereo tape player (with the right tape) or a very basic 2 track studio recorder.

To all of you who have faithfully supported River, he hasn't told you the seriousness of how advanced his cancer is , as he told you he has cancer, what he didn't tell you is that he has only months to live. He has liver cancer and it is in an advanced state. He will continue with videos for as long as he can until he can no longer do them. Thank you for your continued support. Susanna

I know he will probably give you a bollocking for telling us this, but thank you anyway as it actually means a lot. Strange thing to say you might think considering I have never met this lovely man, but I feel as though he is a warm and valued old friend.

He'd like that. In his old funny way I think he feels the same.

I've just read your comment now, Susanna, concerning how ill River is. I'm truly saddened to hear of this. Over the years I've sent River several emails and he was always kind enough to respond cheerfully and in detail. As a long time follower of his I've always appreciated his videos and his taking the time to return emails to me. Now that KZbin no longer has a way to send such messages privately I'll post here. As EgoSheredder said above I've never met River but feel as if he is an old friend whom I enjoy hearing from in these videos. I do wish him (and you) the best and please tell him I'm thinking of him at this most difficult of all time. RPM

Susanna Kilner Thank you for providing us with this update. I for one will miss his videos and his easy going style. He has provided me over the years the inspiration to restore and save some of these electronic relics. I wish him and yourself the best for the future.

Grateful for information on how you made the rubber clutches. I got one of these machines (Pye 9132) at a car boot in order to locate some historic recordings for digitisation amongst a collection of old family tapes. As is common in these machines the belts have turned to goo as has the supply reel brake and the 4 x clutch rubbers inside the white part of both reels. I have a set of new belts off ebay but the clutch/brake rubbers are vexing me. For the moment I have wedged some pink rubber sleeving longwise in behind the posts but it is as yet untested as I my next task is to carefully reform the capacitors before powering up.

The N4308 with the black knobs was my very first reel to reel. :-) I got it in used condition in 1982 when i was 8 years old from my aunt. I have it still but mostly all of the rubbers are "philips like" gunk now.... My one has not the "special" stereo socket. This machine was of excellent built quality! I did not treat it well as a kid. Nevertheless, it always went.

Haha! Love your story about doing repairs for the school instead of P.E. That's one way of getting out of it!

I wonder if it was from a college as SKCT on the back of the machine could be South Kent College of Technology a place I spent some time in the 1970
