Philips Universe Vacuum Cleaner Review/Demonstration/Mess Test

This powerful 1800w Philips is made in Holland and it shows.
Much better quality than the previous Chinese made red Philips.
I really like this vacuum, but it has seen a lot of rough use.
This is quite old model now from around early to mid 2000's.

I think that this machine is made for Philips by Electrolux. The bottom half of the canister looks the same as the early Ultrasilencer and Harmony models.

I wouldn't be surprised if this were made by Electrolux. These more expensive Philips vacuums uses the same bags, filters and even motors what Electrolux uses.

It made a very strange noise when the pipe got partially clogged - never heard a vacuum make that particular noise before!That is the first floorhead I have seen where the brushes are raised or lowered by twisting the head around, as most use a pedal on the floorhead to select between brushes down and brushes up. The diamond shape was also unusual, but I have seen other machines demonstrated which used a similar shaped head on IBAISAIC's channel. I trust you had a spare supply of bags for that machine? I also thought that the way that the hose plugged into the machine looked a bit insecure and wobbly, it could have been quite worn, which was why this was the case. A much better machine than the other one you showed that was made in China, as this one had a bag check indicator, variable power knob, longer cable, longer hose, better floorhead, and higher powered motor. It would be good if that was also equipped with a full size turbo brush, but I suppose that in Finland, where people have mostly hard floors, turbo brushes are not that common.

Piece of paper got stuck to the pipe and it made that weird noise. Floorhead works better than I first expected. It glides easily and is light to use. Unfortunately I don't have more bags for this vacuum. This vacuum has seen at least 10 years of heavy use so it really isn't in a good shape. Typical case when no one takes care of it. Just a bag change when it is very full. Chinese vacuum wouldn't last this long. That Red Philips is much newer than this one. Good turbobrush would make this vacuum much more suitable for carpets. Actually in Finland turbobrushes are fairly common, but powerheads are rare and uprights almost nonexistent.

Warning this is gonna be a long story.To explain this vacuum i have to go back to the 90's.In the mid 90's Philips introduced a vacuum serie called the Philips Vision Excel (I owned one of those) it was a 1500w vacuum producing a 400 airwatts. It was the first "modern" swivel top vacuum the modern grandson of the philips P an T series from the 80's and 90's. This vacuum went with retirement when philips introduced the Specialist vacuum series which was the top of the range model of that time. It had a carry handle on the top and front. suction slider swivel top Hepa filter and S-Bag (first philips with S-Bag) it also had a smaller brother this vacuum series called the Universe vacuum it had a fixed hose instead of swivel but was still exactly the same as the specialist. it was a cheaper alternative to the specialist. both were very popular vacuums. in 2006 2007 they were replaced with the philips performer series and the jewel serie replacing the universe, in 2013 the performer pro slowly started to push the performer to retirement and the Jewels were already out of service due to a design fault, they were replaced by the performer active now the performerpro are getting pushed away by the performer ultimate.I really miss these cleaners my specialist was 13 years in service until it died (still have it in the basement waiting to get a new motor. the vacuum you are using there is about 13 to 14 years old still sounds fine please take it with you you have to rescue it cant bare the condition its in now.I hope my story helps understanding this vacuum with its brother it produced alot of good vacuum generations at Philips.Kind regards a dutch Philips addict

Delegend81 hello i fully agree with you from 2003 to 2012 was the best time for philips they launched the best vacuum cleaners philips can ever have but as the years go by they keep changing the designs of vacuum cleaners to be honest i don't like the models they are launching from 2014-2021 , in 2003 i bought the philips universe in yellow color but it spoiled afterwards i bought the specialist fc9102 in 2006 i have it until today then in 2010 i bought the philips fc9178 i have it today, but I just don't know why they took out the fc 9178, fc 9088, fc8732 ..... I don't know why they don't release this model anymore, but they are still modern models at this moment I still have the philips specialist and the philips fc9178 .
