2004 GM Duramax LLY Coolant Leak Near Oil Cooler

This Duramax had a coolant leak above the oil cooler. Repair shows removal of oil cooler components.

Thanks for the video. Just got done with my lly. It also was the gasket between elbow and cooler. Ordered felpro kit but was missing one o-ring but the old one seemed fine. I managed to wrangle it out without removing the tube to the water pump. In fact, I am pretty sure I wouldn't of had to remove tire and fender skirt.

My 2005 Duramax tube is leaking at the flang at the water pump end of the tube. It looks like to me that I need to get the water pump out of the way just to replace this front gasket ???

Could this be the same fix on a 2013? Apparently the leak is in the same area but I'm not sure how much engine changed in this part within these years

Have not done one that new. Check with parts to see if the gaskets are the same part numbers. If they are then its likely the same. Hope that helps.

I just did one on a 2008. It is a tighter fit. Not a nice job.

You can actually do this without doing all this extra stuff. Do not need to remove the water pump pipe. Nor do you need to remove the bottom half of the housing. There are 5 main bolts on the cooler. 2 by the manifold, 2 at the bottom where it goes into the block and another just up from those kinda hidden in the middle. Pull the 2 nuts on the elbow, pull the studs out loosen the bolts on the elbow to cooler and wiggle it out. Saves so much time.

I think I need to do this. Do you use gasket sealant on pipe gasket back to water pump and also on the 90 degree flat gasket? And do all the o ring gaskets need grease put on them?

I'd recommend Gasket sealant on all the gaskets and silicone dielectric grease on the o rings.

If you have a leak here won’t oil mix with the coolant?? Have same issue

I suppose that since both coolant and oil are present at the gaskets in the cooler it is possible for coolant to mix with the oil but most common is an external coolant leak due to the nature of the design. I would think that the actual cooler would have to fail to have the fluids mix. JMO...

I don’t know if I have a head gasket fail or the oil cooler but I’m not leaking coolant and I filled the radiator and I’m loosing coolant .. I tried to pressure test the coolant tank no pressure build up ??? Thx for replying

@@frankram2303 if coolant is going into the crankcase the oil will turn milky. If the coolant is low when you're trying to pressurize it you will need to pump alot.

I think tge trick to the tube is to loosen it about 1/4" on the front studs. This will allow the housing to drop slightly then use a heel bar between the motor mount and the housing to pull it off the oring.

No you don't. You will loose a little but you can top it up afterwards if its not due for a service.

I’ve done this job twice on my 2019 L5P and still am leaking coolant. First time was with the rebuild kit that comes with OEM everything. And have even tried making a paper gasket on my second attempt from the blue gasket paper meant for coolant systems and it still leaks coolant. Any advice?

Sorry no suggestions unless it's coming from higher up. Try adding dye to the coolant and watch it with a black light.

@@PhillipBailey yeah i did just that and according to the UV dye its still coming out of that same metal gasket that i replaced with a paper one where the elbow comes into the cooler. its not leaking where it comes out of the engine block into the elbow

@@sinistraticput a little gasket maker on top of the paper gasket promise it won’t leak lol. Give it time to dry over night before you refill with coolant an bleed the system
