Wow I share a life history with Phil. In 1986 I exited the Army and took my lump sum exit money straight to Guitar Center in Seattle. The sales kid was a teenager. He asked me "If you could buy any guitar in here which one would you want because I will make you a great deal". From across the store, hanging near the ceiling (out of reach) was a black sunburst Gibson Les Paul Standard. I pointed at it and said "That one". HE SOLD IT TO ME FOR $500 (with case) because it was used (1980) plus gave me a FREE Tom Sholz Rockman Soloist headphone amp to make sure I'd buy the guitar. When I brought it in to have the output jack tightened, I learned from the manager that the salesman got in trouble for making that sweet deal. BTW, when I entered the Army, i only saved one acoustic guitar hidden in my parents house, but my stepbrother found it hidden and pawned it for $35 cigarette money and then fled to Australia. Thanks bro.

@@vaughanmacegan4012 You're talking about the S2 McCarty 594? It's over $2200 plus tax in Canada. I've never played a Cort guitar, but I am curious. I'm only buying 2 more guitars & I'm pretty set on the S2 McCarty 594 & the Schecter Tempest though.

That is awesome man. I have been with my wife since spring of 2002 as well. No fun gear acquisition stories. Usually just get the thumbs up and a head shack when I, “get another guitar.”

@@christopherfleming6990 I usually get the "Why do you need another guitar?" Question. I've got a Squier Starcaster on the way, were saving for the S2 McCarty 594, & then a Schecter Tempest to finish my guitar shopping. 8 electric guitars in total & 1 acoustic, & I bought a Katana MK2 50Watt last year. I'm physically disabled as of Feb. 2008, so I don't bring in much income. That's why the GAS doesn't get to live for long, & I can't even justify another guitar purchase. One amp, 4 pedals & the guitars will be the end of my shopping.

My partner is into knitting and spinning and all things wool/fibre. In that 'hobby' they have a similar concept to GAS which is Stash Acquisition Syndrome where you are compelled to buy wool/fibre whenever you see it. This leads to the concept of SABLE - Stash Acquisition Beyond LIfe Expectancy; basically you have so much wool you couldnt use it all up if you knitted for the rest of your life.....We have that problem in my household

I got a MIM Tele from GC for $120 years ago because it fell off a wall and left a decent sized chip in the body on the lower bout. Never affected how it plays, looks roadworn (especially after 12 years), and is my go-to for all occasions. Bundled it with a used Vox AD120VTX amp and came away with a gig-ready setup for under $250. Still use the amp, which at its low output setting is basically a tube amp, for daily use.

THANK YOU, PHIL, FOR ALL OF YOUR AWESOME CONTENT!!! YOU DO BRING A LOT OF KNOWLEDGE, WISDOM, EXPERIENCE, INSIGHTS, ADVICE, CAUTION, EXCITEMENT, IDEAS, INNOVATION, PASSION, AND ENTHUSIASM TO ALL OF US, WHETHER, OR NOT, WE ALL ACKNOWLEDGE IT, OR, REALIZE IT, WEEKLY. PLEASE, PACE YOURSELF,...AND, KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!... YOU COULD THROW IN SOME VIDEO CONTENT, ABOUT THE SUBJECT OF "LEARNING TO PLAY GUITAR", AS WELL, SINCE YOU ARE QUITE PROFICIENT AT PLAYING!...(IN ADDITION TO REVIEWING GEAR)...ALSO, YOU ARE SO DOWN TO EARTH, (LIKE JOSH SCOTT), ..WHICH IS VERY NICE, AND THAT MAKES YOUR VIDEOS SUCH A PLEASURE TO WATCH! SOMETIMES, THE "DEEP DIVES" INTO THE TECHNICAL DETAILS, OF GUITAR ERGONOMICS, ADDS A TON OF VALUE TO THE THOUGHT PROCESSES, OF ANYONE CONSIDERING LOOKING AT, OR, BUYING ANY PARTICULAR USED GUITAR, AND, ESPECIALLY, WHEN CONSIDERING ORDERING A "CUSTOM" BUILT GUITAR! YOU, ARE SO HELPFUL!!! THANKS!, AGAIN! [FYI: I LOVE ALL THINGS "SURF MUSIC" (INSTRUMENTAL TUNES, WITH CLEAR, BEAUTIFUL, MEMORABLE, REAL MELODIES...]. [...IMHO: "JAZZ", "METAL", "RAP/HOP" IS A WASTE OF NOISE!!]

From Leo: GAS is only questioned when a man does it. I bought this house in 2012. I have not seen the countertop in the master bathroom since, it is completely covered with cosmetic products. The 8 X 10 walk in closet in the master bedroom is full, I have nothing in it. The shoe racks are all full. Every time my GAS is brought up, I buy another guitar or amp that week.

Phil, I know exactly what you mean about your wife, and how marrying her was a smart choice! My wife changed our wedding day for a gig! Knew right then marrying her would be the smartest thing I could ever do in my life! And as you said, you can find pretty good $300 guitars, so that’s why before I met her, I had only a couple of guitars and an amp, no job, no license. Now I have what I guess you call a collection of what I think are pretty decent $300-500 guitars, a decent job, and I’m gonna freely admit it was my wife’s doing! Hell she even buys me musical stuff all the time!

I kept getting ready to turn it off the recording and go to bed, and then another interesting item would come up about equipment, like the bit about refretting with stainless steel vs not. My first grown-up guitar is an '09 Schecter Tempest I got right after high school, which has been my #1 ever since (it's in my profile picture!). A few years ago I rewired it and put in zebra Seymour Duncans, and it's wonderful. The only downside is it's backbreakingly heavy, but I didn't take that into account when I bought it. It was on the wall at Guitar Center and all I knew was that I wanted it.

No doubt! Cause, I’ve experienced the opposite being with someone who was unsupportive of me collecting, and buying guitars at all. I couldn’t even get them to go into a guitar store for half an hour. Needless to say that it didn’t last. So yea, if you find a woman who supports your hobby, and supports you as a musician definitely hang onto them.

I just came across your channel, and like it so far so I will be subscribing. Its crazy but you were talking about married life, and when my wife and I were dating I was playing guitar, riding motorcycles, and hang gliding . She bought me a cheap acoustic $150.00 guitar for my birthday, I knew then I had the right one. Over the last 40 years I've bought hang gliders, motorcycles, and dozens of guitars, I probably have 30 or more now. I build guitars too, and have many of them. Of course I have sold many, but my wife has never got upset with me buying guitars or anything really. But that is good advice. if you find a Girl like that you better keep her.

Our dearest wives... ❤️. I’ve had good luck with both JJ and other brands, but have noticed that my gear comes from the factory with Tung-Sol, and replacements are sometimes JJ’s. Back in the day the old Chinese 12AX7’s were nice and bright, and I think mine still work 30 years later. Not sure what’s in there any more. Been a while. Rectifier tubes are an altogether different story, where I prefer expensive ones and it’s not for the tone, but for the longevity. Nice to hear you play more now Phil, even the Mrs has noticed ‘he plays?’. Happy Valentines Day. Share the Love. ❤️

I play lefty so that limits my guitar options. I read in a book that the first run of Fender strats were made in Oct 1954, the month and year I was born so I turned 50 in Oct 2004. Fender came out with a 50th anniverary model that year but not in lefty. I told my girlfriend of three years that I wanted a strat for my birthday so we went to Maple Street Guitars and special ordered a G&L George Fullerton signiture model that looked like Clapton's Blackie guitar. Got it in time for my birthday, love that guitar. We ended up going our separate ways about a year ago but I still have that guitar.

very good elaboration about GAS and wives... I own guitars, more than needed... very few have a value... most are worth playing... I must admit that, on any given period, I only play four of them,. And I play very different styles... for the last two years, this is what I've actually played: Fender Tele and Strat Roadworn. Electric acoustic Jazzbox, that sounds good when played acoustic,.. and a folk guitare here and there. plus a 335 semi hollow, suitable for jazz and rock style, not very often.... When it comes to it, i can dig out two other parscaster and store the current ones...and possibly a jazz guitar that's only really good on stage... same number...

Vid record the Skype session, provided the customer is OK with it. Then you could share with us all on youtube. The time thing: maybe consider dedicating one entire day to this Skype thing. With confirmed appointments all day, prepaid, etc...figure out a price scale for your time [e.g., 60min session costs more than 30min session]. As part of the prep, customer needs to email you the specific details about the issue/what they want to do - then you could reply via email before the Skype to suggest exactly what tools/materials the customer will need to have ready for the Skype session. All of this is just organization Phil. YOU CAN DO IT! It's a GREAT IDEA and honestly could be win-win for everyone. We all get content, people get pro help at a fair, trustworthy price, you get paid twice. :) Plus, you'd be Dr. KYG - making "housecalls"!

Since my initial training was on a 24.75" acoustic instrument - and I was an active weightlifter at the time - the first encounter with the robust weight of a Les Paul was repulsive! To be honest, I haven't gotten over it in 45 years! It was much nicer to feel free on stage with a Soviet-era Mustang clone! Since then, I always prefer those so-called student guitars! The biggest surprise was the Square Bullet - very neat carpentry work. Great instrument after replacing the pickups.🤓

ESP has had a challenge in recent years branding and marketing their guitar offerings in non-domestic markets. It’s interesting how different generations perceive certain brands. As someone who picked up guitar in the early 2000s, I associate ESP with their standard series guitars (production Japanese made). I bet those early guitars you referenced were made when ESP was primarily a custom shop. Seems like ESP has come full circle - anything made out of their Japanese Custom Shop or Made to Order USA Shop has the ESP logo.

I have a 2004 Cherry red epiphone SG and it is one of the best sounding guitars in my collection yet I had 2010 epiphone SG and it was horrible, and also I have other guitars like gibson, sterling and PRS etc so I can relate to liking a cheaper guitar over an expensive one.

In regards to the Digitech Drop pedal, it's a life safer for my coverband. It's great for dropping a step or two, anything more than 5 tho and it starts to sound just a little off

@@joshbittner for sure. I use a combo of WinAmp and the Pacemaker add-on tho. It'll let you slow down the song while it keeps correct pitch and also you can change the pitch independently to practice along side. I don't always have my pedalboard with me, so that's an all around solution at home.

I like dealing with Sweetwater, I have bought a Hunter Hayes signature Music Man guitar and just bought the James Valentine signature music man guitar. l like them both, love the roasted necks and the action on music man guitars. I especially like the 55-point pre-check that Sweetwater does before they ship out a guitar. The setup out the box has always spot on. I have found that Sweetwater will deal with me on the price of their guitars that's a real Plus... NOW ! What I don't like about Sweetwater is when you're buying high-end items my particular guy gets right back to me many times answering the phone on the spot BUT when I call and leave a message telling him I need smaller $$$ items he does not return calls and that sucks. I don't like that AND I just pick up the phone and call Musician's Friends... if they're not going to return my calls , I call another dealer that will return my calls. That happens a lot with Sweetwater and it is a bummer. One thing I do like is Phillip McKnight and know your gear channel. Thank You Philip for the awesome Channel you have. Best way to get rid of a 250 dollar guitar? Sell it to GC. You'll get what you would net in an online sale.

If you have a guitar worth 250$, if you sell it for 200$ + shipping on reverb youre getting ... like 190$. If you sell it to guitar center, youre at most getting 100$.

@@JgHaverty not I. Sold an epi lp muse for 180. Is it worth more than 250? Sure. But you can't get more than that on CL or ebay, since that price is too close to new. Shipping will set you back $50 to be conservative (more likely $65, and you pray no damage or you eat the whole sale). That's the problem with guitars valued in that range. You can fight like a dog to sell it and ship it... if that extra $10-$25 is worth it to ya. (Oh, I forgot ebay listing fees. And, er, PayPal's bit, too.)

Hi Phil, I have a question about caramelized/baked/roasted maple necks, since you own guitars equipped with them and probably came across enough of them to have a solid opinion on them: Does this treatment really improve the stability of the neck compared to 3- or 5-piece laminated necks for example? In other words: is it really a feature that is a big deal? Or do I still have to adjust the neck when seasons/temperature/humidity changes? It makes sense to me that it does increase stability compared to a normal 1-piece-maple neck but how does it compare to laminated necks?
