Nice job Phill, that will make a pleasant change from working at the workmate on the patio ! As they're nice thick hardwood jaws you could consider adding a small dog hole (or two) to enable you to clamp wide boards to the bench top !
@PhillWyattProjects Жыл бұрын
Thanks Andy yea I was thinking about adding dog holes although for now I'll leave it as it is because I'm not sure how often I will use them. As you say I can always add them later 👍🏻

New to ur channel man. I like this Irwin Vise. I bought a small Magnusson vise off Amazon and I wish I hadn't now. It's not great at all man. It's got way too much slop in it. The holes for connecting the wooden jaws to it are too close together which means the wood flaps about. I'm thinking of building a new workbench with 2x4's for the top. I might just make a nice narrow workbench instead just for my hand planes and sawing work. I've gotten to hand tools of late and I love working with my new planes. I bought them cheap but i managed to get them set up really nicely. The shavings are so good. The Magnusson vise was supposed to give me the ability to be able to clamp wood so I could plane or saw but it's garbage. I think I'll be investing in one like u have here. Great build but I have to say I LIKE THE WORKBENCH U BUILT. i SUB'D AND LIKED TOO BTW..

Thanks my friend 👍🏻 I do like this vice. It's just the rite size not too big not too small. It was fairly cheap to buy also and I love the blue colour of it. I think it's difficult to buy the correct vice for your needs. I spent hours researching them before I decided on this one. A 2 X 4 workbench sounds nice and solid. 👍🏻

Thanks so much for making this video! I learned something very helpful to me. A different question: What kind of gloves are those? They look like the perfect work gloves. I'd like to get a pair.
@PhillWyattProjects3 ай бұрын
I think they are what I currently use which are Excel Durable Grip Working Gloves from a website called tools4trade.co.uk

Is the inside of your vise oiled/finished or raw wood? I keep mine unfinished to increase the grip.
@PhillWyattProjects5 күн бұрын
@@BruceSorkin yes no finish on the inner jaws. I still want to add a piece of leather to the front jaw for even more grip too.

@PhillWyattProjects Жыл бұрын
Thanks 👍🏻 yea might be a good idea as saw dust gets stuck down the gap.

Large screws going through the back piece of wood and into the bench would be a better way of doing it

What’s the shim (ruler) for?
@PhillWyattProjects10 ай бұрын
I used the ruler as a shim to slightly raise the wooden jaws off of the screw thread.

TIP: Although many things are described as being Mahogany, it has been illegal to export genuine South American rain forest Mahogany since 1974 (can only be used within the country of origin). Some does get illegally exported into USA and some of that ends up in other countries - UK included, no doubt. The chances are that when a product is described as being made of Mahogany, it will either be Sapele (which closely resembles Mahogany) or from a south east Asian plantation of Mahogany that grows much faster than in a native South American rain forest and does not have the same quality. So, if you do come across genuine rain forest Mahogany, it is either 50-year old stock or illegal. I know it's geeky - but that's me...!
@michaelhartley11Ай бұрын
wood looks like oak to me , not red enough for sapele
