This is great! Born and raised in philly, and while its definitely exaggerated at times, its point on. Not only is the accent correct but the fact that you incorporated all types of philly stuff like, "wooder" ice and "talian" roll makes it hysterical. I was bored and started looking into philly accents on here and this is the most entertaining video i came across. I really enjoyed this...thanks

I was born in Richmond, VA, moved to France when I was a kid, stayed there 20 years, moved to Philly just over a month ago. I thought I was crazy. I knew my English was rusty and needed some work, but I felt like a moron moving here. I still don't understand some people at stores or whatever, just frigging articulate and speak up please LOL. Your video nails it. I'm showing it to everybody. I make people repeat two, three times and sometimes still don't understand.

You've done the best job I've found so far on capturing the differences from other American English speech; maybe a little heavier on the southern "i" than I ever hear - sounds more Delaware and eastern shore Maryland. Sad to say the local dialect is dying, at least as far as I can tell from kids who've grown up here since the 1980s. Note to others: Wawa was never that common north of the city until recently, but their cawfee is supposedly the best.

This accent is cool to listen to for me as a Midwesterner, because it seems like a throwback to colonial days sort of. I was watching this special on PBS called the Story of English, and they had these fishermen in Tangier Island, Virginia, in the Chesapeake that had the purest, undiluted version of this colonial accent, which they traced back to Wessex in England. They theorized that this accent was almost unchanged since 1607, when the British established a fort in Jamestowne.

I love hearing different dialect, especially when a native does it. Of course it's more pronunced as he is pointing out the features of the dialect. Good job!

This guy is brilliant! I grew up in the NE, so my accent wasn't as pronounced, and I lost it when I moved to Canada in the 60s after college, but I love to watch his videos. My brothers and I were in the diner on Cottman Avenue (just west of Wilson JHS) one day and the waitress actually said to us: "Whas yers, hun?" when taking our order. That and "gon' ta Walwood" are our two favourite greetings now! Our friends think we are crazy!

Dude this is by far the best look into the subtle nuances of the Philly accent I've ever seen. I'm laughin my ass off over here! Mine, like most in the area, is way more toned down, but a few times I went to repeat a line and said it the the same way. "If it ain' crookid iss shchray." "don' 'ave enuff steaff." "Whuffy fawlls, gofferbid?" "muyswell" You nailed it bud!

@DrJuice1 I think you're 100% right about this video. I made this when I'd just gotten back from four years in the Mid-West, so my accent had dulled down a lot. Over the past year, in Philly again, it's gotten more natural. I think you can tell by comparing this to my latest video - watch Philly Tawk: Overview of Mid-Atlantic English, Part 3

I moved to California where people think I just grew up here and when I hear People with the Philadelphia accent I recognize it right away but I don’t know exactly what it is about it and I love the way that you spell everything in the captions that’s awesome I wish I could do it and I’m from there! I don’t exactly like the way it sounds but I feel like being from there I should be able to talk like that! I say yo and People look at me weird and they have no idea what Wawa is but other than that I sound like I’m from California.

I can almost hear a slight Australian twang in some of those words. Living in the suburbs of Philapa, I have some elements of this but not others. I don't say "wooder", but I do say "hawse". And I like to go to "Flarida" to visit Mickey "Mowze". I don't say "downashure", it's more like "downdashore". And "Seven-eleven" is what it is. And I still use a MAC machine.
