Great lesson. What are your thoughts on electronic drums? I've avoided them forever but for the music my band is writing and uniqueness of available digital sounds, recordings and quieter practice (being able to practice at night or early in the morning) I'm considering getting one. Hopefully it won't hurt my drumming if I get one.

Glad to hear you address this subject. With so many “ drummers “ on YT you are one of the select few whose shared knowledge clicks with my appetite for learning. So yer back on the “ island of the gods “ . Listening to the ambient sounds of nature in the background makes my heart yearn to be there again. Are you leasing a villa in Ubud ? 🥁😎

The way to waste time on the pad is to practice when you're too tired to get anything useful done, or when you're bored and distracted/unfocused. 15 minutes of quality time vs 1 hour unfocused time, the difference in what you get out of your time is huge. Also, keeping your practice time interesting and challenging will help your mind stay focused and distraction free. It's the difference between investing your time vs wasting your time. Enjoy your time in Bali Phil!! PS The clave thing is awesome, I might try to come up with a different version using singles & paradiddles!

For your clave/flam taps/ singles exercise, are you continuing the singles into the next bar or are you giving a beat break? If so, what hand you leading with back in? Thanks!!

Well - I heard even well known drummers talking about »practicing« on your pad while watching tv - like it was a »time saving« thing. It's not at all. I'm totally with you, to not do it! Since there is a danger of sounding exactly that, when you are on stage: like a musician watching TV while playing 😂(without even being aware of it).

LOL yeah pretty much. I have heard well known players say all kinds of whacky stuff. So no surprise there

i do a lot of practice while watching tv to build up my weak left hand, lots of stuff that is easy to ambiently build up even if you’re just practicing moeller on a pad for a week. i’ve happily seen the results on the kit in just two weeks of daily practice. pads aren’t a kit, but have their uses.

@@verygoodfreelancer If you're happy with it, fine! For me, drumming is a kind of meditative practice. Personally, it's not possible for me to meditate and watch TV at the same time.

Obviously, the only true drum feel you're gonna get, is off of a real drum. Practice pads are great if they're you're instrument of choice. I got a used piccolo snare, removed the head, filled it with tee-shirts to mute it, and i have a real drum with real head, to practice upstairs on.
