Carl Jung - How To Become Psychologically Mature (Jungian Philosophy)
In this video we will be talking about how to become psychologically mature from the philosophy of Carl Jung. Although Carl Jung’s work does not reflect a systematic philosophy, his contribution to the realm of philosophy is significant and often referred to as “Jungian philosophy”. Becoming psychologically mature does not happen overnight, it is a long process which takes place over a lifetime, and you need to go through the 4 stages. To help you navigate them smoothly and avoid the pitfalls in the way of becoming psychologically mature, in this video we will talk about the 4 stages of life in detail and how you can make the most of them in order to reach the highest levels of maturity according to the philosophy of Carl Jung. The four stages to become psychologically mature are -
01. The Athlete Stage
02. The Warrior Stage
03. The Statement Stage
04. The Spirit Stage
I hope you enjoyed watching the video and hope these lessons on how to become psychologically mature from the philosophy of Carl Jung will add value to your life.
Carl Jung, together with Sigmund Freud and Alfred Adler, is one of the 3 founders of psychoanalysis which is a set of psychological theories and methods aiming to release repressed emotions and experiences - in other words, to make the unconscious conscious. Jung was born in Switzerland in 1875 and died in 1961, leaving behind great works in the fields of psychiatry, anthropology, archaeology, literature, philosophy, psychology and religious studies. Jung had Freud as a mentor for a good part of his career but later he departed from him. This division was painful for Jung and it led him to found his own school of psychology, called analytical psychology as a comprehensive system separate from psychoanalysis. If classical psychoanalysis focuses on the patient’s past, as early experiences are very important in personality development, analytical psychology primarily focuses on the present, on mythology, folklore, and cultural experiences, to try to understand human consciousness. One of the most important ideas of analytical psychology which Jung founded is the process of individuation, which is the process of finding the self - something Jung considered an important task in human development. While he did not formulate a systematic philosophy, he is nonetheless considered a sophisticated philosopher - his school of thought dubbed “Jungian philosophy”. Its concepts can apply to many topics covered in the humanities and the social sciences. A good part of his work was published after his death and indeed there are still some articles written by him that to this day have yet to be published. Some of his most important books are: “Psychology of the Unconscious”, “Man and His Symbols”, “The Archetypes and The Collective Unconscious”, “Modern Man In Search of a Soul”, “The Psychology of the Transference”, “Memories, Dreams, Thoughts”, and “The Relations Between the Ego and the Unconscious”. Besides being a great writer and a researcher, he was also an artist, a craftsman and even a builder. His contribution is enormous and there is a great deal we can learn from his works.

Hey there! Thanks for sharing this insightful video on Carl Jung's philosophy. It's fascinating to delve into the concept of psychological maturity and how Jung breaks it down into stages like the Athlete, Warrior, Statement, and Spirit. Understanding these stages seems like a key to navigating life's journey. Great find!

"The qualities of a mature person are very strange. First, he is not a person. He is no longer a self. He has a presence, but he is not a person. Second, he is more like a child...simple and innocent. That’s why I said the qualities of a mature person are very strange, because maturity gives a sense as if he has experienced, as if he is aged, old. Physically he may be old, but spiritually he is an innocent child. His maturity is not just experience gained through life. Then he will not be a child, and then he will not be a presence; he will be an experienced person - knowledgeable but not mature. Maturity has nothing to do with your life experiences. It has something to do with your inward journey, experiences of the inner. The more he goes deeper into himself, the more mature he is. When he has reached the very center of his being, he is perfectly mature. But at that moment the person disappears, only presence remains. The self disappears, only silence remains. Knowledge disappears, only innocence remains. To me, maturity is another name for realization: you have come to the fulfillment of your potential, it has become actual. The seed has come on a long journey, and has blossomed. Maturity has a fragrance. It gives a tremendous beauty to the individual. It gives intelligence, the sharpest possible intelligence. It makes him nothing but love. His action is love, his inaction is love; his life is love, his death is love. He is just a flower of love. The West has definitions of maturity which are very childish. The West means by maturity that you are no longer innocent, that you have ripened through life experiences, that you cannot be cheated easily, that you cannot be exploited, that you have within you something like a solid rock - a protection, a security. This definition is very ordinary, very worldly. Yes, in the world you will find mature people of this type. But the way I see maturity is totally different, diametrically opposite to this definition. The maturity will not make you a rock; it will make you so vulnerable, so soft, so simple. I remember...a thief entered a master’s hut. It was a full-moon night, and by mistake he had entered; otherwise, what can you find in a master’s house? The thief was looking, and was amazed that there was nothing. And then suddenly he saw a man who was coming with a candle in his hand. The man said, “What are you looking for in the dark? Why did you not wake me up? I was just sleeping near the front door, and I could have showed you the whole house.” And the man looked so simple and so innocent, as if he could not conceive that anybody could be a thief. Before his simplicity and innocence, the thief said, “Perhaps you do not know that I am a thief.” The master said, “That doesn’t matter, one has to be someone. The point is that I have been in the house for thirty years and I have not found anything, so let us search together! And if we can find something, we can be partners. I have not found anything in this house; it is just empty.” The thief was a little afraid: the man seems to be strange. Either he is mad or...who knows what kind of man he is? He wanted to escape, because he had brought things from two other houses that he had left outside the house. The master had only one blanket - that was all that he had - and it was a cold night, so he told that thief, “Don’t go this way, don’t insult me this way; otherwise I will never be able to forgive myself, that a poor man came to my house in the middle of the night and had to go empty-handed. Just take this blanket. And it will be good - outside it is so cold. I am inside the house; it is warmer here.” He covered the thief with his blanket. The thief was just losing his mind! He said, “What are you doing? I am a thief!” The master said, “That does not matter. In this world everybody has to be somebody, has to do something. You may be stealing; that doesn’t matter, a profession is a profession. Just do it well, with all my blessings. Do it perfectly, don’t be caught; otherwise you will be in trouble.” The thief said, “You are strange. You are naked and you don’t have anything!” The master said, “Don’t be worried, because I am coming with you! Only the blanket was keeping me in this house; otherwise in this house there is nothing - and the blanket I have given to you. I am coming with you - we will live together. You seem to have many things; it is a good partnership. I have given my all to you. You can give me a little bit; that will be right.” The thief could not believe it! He just wanted to escape from that place and from that man. He said, “No, I cannot take you with me. I have my wife, I have my children, and my neighbors, what will they say? - `You have brought a naked man!’” He said, “That’s right. I will not put you in any embarrassing situation. So you can go, I will remain in this house.” And as the thief was going, the master shouted, “Hey! Come back!” The thief had never heard such a strong voice; it went just like a knife. He had to come back. The master said, “Learn some ways of courtesy. I have given you the blanket and you have not even thanked me. So first, thank me; it will help you a long way. Secondly, going out - you opened the door when you came in - close the door! Can’t you see the night is so cold, and can’t you see that I have given you the blanket and I am naked? Your being a thief is okay, but as far as manners are concerned, I am a difficult man. I cannot tolerate this kind of behavior. Say thank you!” The thief had to say, “Thank you, sir,” and he closed the door and escaped. He could not believe what had happened! He could not sleep the whole night. Again and again he remembered...he had never heard such a strong voice, such power. And the man had nothing! He enquired the next day and he found out that this was a great master. He had not done well. It was absolutely ugly to go to that poor man; he had nothing. But he was a great master. The thief said, “That I can understand myself - that he is a very strange kind of man. In my whole life I have been coming in contact with different kinds of people, from the poorest to the richest, but never... even remembering him, a shivering goes through my body. “When he called me back I could not run away. I was absolutely free, I could have taken the things and run away, but I could not. There was something in his voice that pulled me back.” After a few months the thief was caught, and in the court the magistrate asked him, “Can you name a person who knows you in this vicinity?” He said, “Yes, one person knows me” ...and he named the master. The magistrate said, “That’s enough - call the master. His testimony is worth that of ten thousand people. What he says about you will be enough to give judgment.” The magistrate asked the master, “Do you know this man?” He said, “Know him? We are partners. He is my friend. He even visited me one night in the middle of the night. It was so cold that I gave him my blanket. He is using it, you can see. That blanket is famous all over the country; everybody knows it is mine.” The magistrate said, “He is your friend? And does he steal?” The master said, “Never! He can never steal. He is such a gentleman that when I gave him the blanket he said to me, `Thank you, sir.’ When he went out of the house, he silently closed the doors. He is a very polite, nice fellow.” The magistrate said, “If you say so, then all the testimonies of the witnesses who have said that he is a thief are cancelled. He is freed.” The master went out and the thief followed him. The master said, “What are you doing? Why are you coming with me?” He said, “Now I can never leave you. You have called me your friend, you have called me your partner. Nobody has ever given me any respect. You are the first person who has said that I am a gentleman, a nice person. I am going to sit at your feet and learn how to be like you. From where have you got this maturity, this power, this strength, this seeing of things in a totally different way?” The master said, “Do you know that night how bad I felt? You had gone; it was so cold. Without a blanket sleep was not possible. I was just sitting by the window seeing the full moon, and I wrote a poem: `If I was rich enough I would have given this perfect moon to that poor fellow, who had come in the dark to search for something in a poor man’s house. I would have given the moon if I had been rich enough, but I am poor myself.’ I will show you the poem, come with me. “I wept that night, that thieves should learn a few things. At least they should inform a day or two ahead when they come to a man like me, so we can arrange something, so they don’t have to go empty-handed. “It is good that you remembered me in the court; otherwise those fellows are dangerous, they may have mistreated you. I offered that very night to come with you and be partners with you, but you refused. Now you want... There is no problem, you can come. Whatever I have I will share with you. But it is not material: it is something invisible.” The thief said, “That I can feel; it is something invisible. But you have saved my life, and now it is yours. Make whatever you want to make of it. I have been simply wasting it. Seeing you, looking in your eyes, one thing is certain - that you can transform me. I have fallen in love from that very night."

What I love about educational videos such as this is when the subject is explained so clearly that all that it does is remind you of what you already know but couldn't get your thoughts focused for whatever reason. I shared this video with my mom who doesn't really pay attention to philosophy or anything and I can imagine her mind listening to this video and reflecting upon her own life with this internal quiet aha moment.

Well I only began to concerned with my physical appearance as from the age of 47, and it is then when I began to be less sympathetic. Up to that age I was pure heart and humanity broke my heart. So at that point I said "two fingers" to all of those who keep on going about peace, and help others and the like because I spent 34 years helping people from my heart and what I have got to show for it is a permanent state of anxiety.

Jabs05; seems that you just hit the nxt stage of opening the pandora. And this is exiting! This here is about foundational Psychology. But I would say not including the holistic spiritual-physical development. Just the fine line EGO versus needed healthy EGO will yield a beautiful quest. I can tell from experience (I am walking a very unbiased path never believing) that giving - like anything else - comes with so many different facets for why we are doing such. The journey gives us a road. Blocks for me means - back to the drawing board. I never regret. Always accepting the past. But ONLY forward 'changing the setting or accepting them'. Ohh so much on this, Stoics!? All is beautiful; we just walk the road. Learning to hear the knocking. using them. Like example: Giving could take a person away from finding it himself, or might be a (even an egoistic😅) need from our soul for something we don't see. It is hard to tell, but I myself often find myself inside a knot.... And then also: never give up being what you are even the return is not showing yet - if it is your real purpose.

@@myofasciatherapy8191 Well this story tell us that the body looks for security and that life is about mental security. There is no ego. An encounter with the perfect man (This story illustrates that the purpose of life is to secure the body) I'm sitting outside a coffee shop opposite the university where I work when a lecturer colleague, Fred, as he's going past says to me, 'What's this irresponsible Venezuelan doing in the UK?' Ignoring his remark I ask, 'Have you noticed how students seem to be quite late to classes nowadays?' He checks his stride to say, 'Well, I've noticed how people no longer seem to queue at bus stops.' I continue by telling him about the ring scam where the perpetrator bends just in front of one pretending he's picking up a ring he's just found; he then tries to fit it on one of his fingers, but as it doesn't, he's willing to exchange it for any cash one wishes to volunteer. Remembering how silent I used to be Fred is stunned by my chattiness, and comes to a halt. He gives me a perplexed look as if I were an extra-terrestrial. Rather than continue walking, he backtracks, enters the coffee shop, comes out with a salad and sits beside me. I quiz him on Bill Gates. He replies, belittling this famous person, 'Who's that? Who's that?' So I give him my thoughts on Gates through my interpretation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, 'There are two main characters - the Witch and Snow White. The witch represents the person who, although not superior, demands superiority at whatever activity. She is the person who is fuming for not having been born superior. Whereas, Snow White is the person who is superior.' Giving me an inquisitive look he drawls, 'How do you think of that?' I was truly enjoying this. I was finally getting even with Fred after many years of being on the losing side. I go for the killer blow and tell him my thoughts on the perfect man - 'The perfect man goes to Trafalgar Square and stands there like a statue for the rest of his life.' After a silence, he exclaims, 'That's Nelson!' Again he goes silent, whilst I wait to see if the blow has done the trick. Yes it has! He can't take it any more. Suddenly he stands up; with terror filled eyes he asserts, 'It's a question of security.' I lower my head and acknowledge, 'Yes that's the word, security' Staring at me suspiciously he picks the empty plate. 'I'm going to pay the man his security,' he says, and goes into the coffee shop. He comes out, and walking close to me, giving me a distasteful, suspicious, angry and frightened look, and nearly head-butting me he exclaims, 'The birds will shit on him!' Lowering my head, I reply, 'No, he's too strong.' He then distances himself from me. Well, it's now time to introduce the perfect man to others and as there are two colleagues in my office, I ask them, 'Do you know who the perfect man is?' both in tandem reply, 'me!' By now, I can hardly contain my laughter, but I do manage to keep a straight face and tell them, 'No, the perfect man goes to Trafalgar Square and stands there like a statue for the rest of his life.' Both immediately reply, 'The birds will shit on him!' My fourth introduction of the perfect man is to a Kenyan friend. The others had been from Scotland, England and Wales. It just goes to show all human beings are the same because as soon as I mention that the perfect man walks to Trafalgar Square and stands there like a statue, my Kenyan friend tightens his fingers and moving his hand as if he was about to lay something says, 'The birds will shit on him!' Again I laugh, and he remarks, “what are you some kind of psychologist?” Poor perfect man - he is not welcomed anywhere! Questions: why do the people want to attack the statue? What has the statue done to them? If they want to destroy the statue is because they fear the statue, why should they fear an inanimate object? Thankfully I happened to watch this video ... I could find myself in the warrior stage now and also could see my closed once in early stage of immaturity whom I can guide now. This is exactly how we can relate with wat happens with us. Great analysis of life and I specifically liked the way we are compared with the Sun ☀️ at different stages of the day. It's important to accept ourselves the way we are and get awakened.

I most certainly agree with Jung’s 4 stages of life. I take issue though a little with his definition of the 3rd stage. Most people today could care less about a “legacy “. It’s just hard enough to survive and do whatever you can for your family or whoever in the now. I do agree with the 4th stage and the fact that you have to realize you can’t cling on to anything. Realize your spirituality. For the end is near.

You don't necessarily have to wait until you become of old age in order to enter the spirit stage of your life, since (higher) awareness can emerge in any moment, especially when very suddenly one has to face hardships that seem almost impossible to overcome at first glance. Overcoming these obstacles can drastically help one reach psychological maturity way earlier than outlined in this video, depending on how resilient and flexible one is.

Eytsch; I think many agree with this. I can only think that Jung himself knew too. Maybe because it is not easy to point out side-steps without going deeper, or here for it starts at the foundation. I don't recall if Jung did mention it - it needs to mention: those stages can come in so many multifaceted different time-lines in one's Life.

I’d be interested to hear how it goes. I don’t think I’ve done any of life in the order they suggest in this video, but I can’t say my life is a failure at 49 either and only that I’ve done my best with the education I was given and stumbled across. The world is a different place since Jung designed his model for life. Whether for better or worse changes are speeding up and society is chaotically changing career trajectories. I hope your Jungian Analyst is appreciative of the changes we are coping with too. Go well.

How does one recover from losing the person one loves? Left me low in self-confidence and without faith in the world. I lost self-respect, so struggling to get to self-love. A long journey probably. At 36 I’m just impatient. I really thought I’d found the love of my life; a blow to my neural net.

I have personally Never tried to falsely "change myself" in order to accomplish a "goal" like a girlfriend or U name it actually. I have ADHD and it may be a part of the reason, because i just CAN'T fake my personality really, period. There is NO way i would "Act" as someone else when i already know how and who i am. I am Daniel Engqvist, overly altruistic, often easily used by others, determined, humoristic(you can't even imagine), compassionate(helping snails cross the sidewalk and so on), SUPER tolerant to public harassment, "Fatherly" and so on. But i learned it The hard way really, and i actually can't really think of/imagine another way to learn it. So Just be YOU and stick with it but with an open mind with no fear of the constant change that is actually going on all our life because it will go on until you leave this place. Psychedelics can also help but that is only for grown ups(catch 22). Cheers from Daniel/Sweden. I hope some of this can help you understand something about what it means to be "mature".(I am Eccentric yes)

Jung was right. He spoke about a right way. But today time have changed. There is not work, relationships are broken and its strong the meaningless of life. Jung thinks from phycology and the individual, not social reality. This last one is empirical and conflictive, not therical.

Very interesting…although so very “modern” that one wonders if this is what Jung observed. For example: When I was young (1960s) it was not unusual to see middle-class families where the couple had met in their late teens…perhaps in college…married and started a family while still presumably at the start of their “warrior (career building) stage”. Many colleges and universities built “married student housing” complete with family oriented amenities. For most of human history couples would form and begin creating family units during teen years. In my own Catholic vocational boys high school, a number of kids got married and started family before they even hit their 20s. I am sure Jung encounters Swiss building trade apprentices who already had started families…while perhaps still living with one of the spouses parents. Perhaps…these 4 stages are ALWAYS present in our lives in one form or another…at least by puberty…and that the mark of maturity is a matter of emphasis and management throughout our lives. For example: An adult may need to re-enter a sort-of warrior stage at age 50 when faced with the need to transition to a new career. Meanwhile they must do this amidst the a stage in life where they are expecting to display wisdom borne of experience, love and empathy. I know it’s a cliché but in many respects life IS a journey with what might include several sunrises, noons and sunsets…and not all in that same sequence.
