Teaching 2024-2025: Philosophy of Language and Mind
Seminar of January 6, 2025: The Language of Perception and Conscious Experience
Speaker: Pascal Ludwig
According to the “naive” approach to perception, having a conscious sensory experience implies maintaining a certain relationship with the environment. Thus, the qualitative character of a visual experience of red does not come from a “quale” internal to the mind, but rather from a relationship with a real instantiation of the color red in the perceived scene. This approach is notably motivated by the study of the language of perception, since in French, we describe perceptual events as relationships between subjects and entities actually present in the environment. I propose to defend this naive relational approach, by confronting it with certain uses of the vocabulary of perception that could seem to contradict it, particularly in situations of abnormal perception.
