Great video. Just had my first appointment 2 weeks ago. My rep has been going back and forth with me on Text a bit so I have no idea if I’m someone they would consider selling a watch to, either way I’d expect it to take it a years. I’ve heard about this 4 times thing online. I’ve gone in 2x. I was able to stop in the first time and then set up an actual formal appointment for my 2nd time. Both times the rep Ive been dealing with has been really lovely. Definitely was an in depth conversation both times. During my 1st visit we just talked watches for 45 mins. My 2nd visit we really talked about the brand and what I was interested in. My preference is the 37mm date or the 38mm Chrono. Both I imagine will be almost impossible to get.

So first hand experience, real story! I originally purchased my first AP at Westime when they were an AP AD i bought an offshore, with the promise of a RO. However a few months later AP decided to remove them and solely sell their watches from AP boutiques. I was forced to drive an hour to the closest boutique, so i came in and tried to explain my purchase history and honestly they didn’t give a crap. I was upset about it and tried to speak to the manager seemed like it made it worse lol i was called by a regional allocator won’t say his name and he interviewed me over the phone for about 45 min. It was almost a job interview intensity. I remember him asking what watches were in my collection? Where do i see myself in the next 5/10 years. How do you make a living etc…. After the interview he said be patient. So i still showed up to the AD a few times i really wanted a Rose Royal Oak on a bracelet! After a 8 months or so Xmas time they called me to the boutique. Offered me a Rose RO on a strap but i wanted it on a bracelet, salesperson tried to sell me the bracelet seperate (conversion) But the watch ref would be a strap i kindly declined and said i want it factory bracelet please…. I didn’t get called for almost 3 years i had given up on them. I figured maybe since i declined a watch they just black listed me whatever….Out of the blue the sales assoc called and said hey we didn’t forget..And finally got my gold RO on a bracelet. 100% they look you up they see what your about it’s their brand and it’s key for them to have the proper person wearing their product. It’s not an openworked or jumbo however i’ve never seen anyone wearing my watch and i appreciate that. When i wear my Rolex i will see 15 people or so wearing my or similar watches But the AP i still haven’t seen one person wearing a Rose RO on a bracelet and i appreciate that 😅 sorry for the rant

I went through the whole vetting process I was told I had to start somewhere and to get an offshore first. When the call came I said nope I’m not buying a watch I don’t like and will take a 5K hit on. Since then I’ve been ignored. Fml 🤦🏻♂️

The watch Market is dead, gray market dealers are scrambling in the states to off load watches. It’s getting bad here.

If the AP vetting process was actually any good there wouldn't be any grey market inventory.

The UK is the worst country to buy an AP. Just go overseas or buy it for a premium if you really want it. If you’re buying an AP paying more than retail shouldn’t be a problem for you unless it’s 3 times retail which is rare.

Basically to ego stroke, for snobs and insecure folks Its for all luxury brands. Paying 500 for a normal hoodie with a lV or chrome logo on it still blows my mind. At least watches hold their values

Are you talking about the moral standards of same AP who did a made to order 25 limited edition perpetual calendars for Anant Ambani not necessarily because he's such an enthusiast but merely because he's rich and is having a lavish wedding!
@connor71626 ай бұрын
Sounds like AP are absolute Pss takers. Made me not want to even attempt to buy one after watching this video. And the thing about “I would do the same” about AP vetting customers is a load of waffle. Someone wants to buy your product and they have the money to do it. The customer doesn’t need to kiss your ass for you to sell them it. Proof of this is the fact you can literally buy an AP on the grey market, they can’t control any of that. Total bollocks, anyway … thanks for the info 😂

AP has one big problem.. they increased the list prices in the last 5 years like no one. Without a real justification… same very small movements compared to the size, not much innovation and irritating + 2many „limited“ editions. Men Steel watch for starting from 25k$ is just a bad joke. 30k for the Chrono…

Phil, you’re being very disingenuous. On one hand you’re advising people to be “kind, honest, inquisitive,polite “ when going to a Rolex or AP AD. Yet, you’re the one who fraudulently and deliberately dishonestly claimed to be a doctor when buying a Rolex from an AD !! Disgusting behaviour.
@augustojoseramonpinochetug52356 ай бұрын
No, it's not. You gotta do what you gotta do. If ADs are playing dirty tell them whatever you have to
@philjones3522 ай бұрын
You can have an educational qualification that has a doctorate which makes you a doctor. Not necessarily in a medical field. As the sales staff are projecting a friendly image as they pry into all aspects of your background they aren't exactly being open about their motives although their motives are obvious, so if you describe yourself as a doctor because you have a doctorate in engineering you are being just as honest as they are. As long as you are calm and friendly as you respond to their impertinent questions then it's all good.
@JohnnyL202 ай бұрын
@@philjones352 So what was your PhD in ? Presumably you are saying that you were not lying when you told them that you were a doctor? I'm a doctor in medicine - so whether you were pretending to be my type of doctor - or any other type of doctor, that is immoral and dishonest.
@philjones3522 ай бұрын
@@JohnnyL20 No bud. Not everyone lives in your country, or has to conform to your personal interpretation of what a doctor is. You're assuming I told a dealer was a doctor, try reading the actual words I used. Have a good one.

AP sales associates are snakes. They will try to get you to Zelle 5k to them personally and after doing that several times and making you buy 3 watches to get one RO they can and will decide to just cut you off. It completely turned me off the brand as a whole.

Great video, I appreciate the effort put to create it. However I do disagree with AP (Rolex, Vacheron, Patek) policy that is full of shit, as they do not do any vetting as if they were do that there would be no more flippers, just passionate buyers that “meet” the brands image, but my educated guess is that dealers are hand and hand with their friends /family/ grey market who they allocate the watches and they split the profit. Their policy simply adds a middle men and creates/maintains this hype and is a buyers are being incredibly stupid to fall for it (I already purchased overpriced watches from grey market :) )
@SDSFG4512 күн бұрын
There's way too many wonderful watchmakers out here in the World, to be stuck up by AP...I've been collecting timepieces for 40 yrs...my grandfather gifted me a Rolex, before he passed, to get me started. Guess who didn't make me wait...Panerai, took my money and the transaction was a breeze. Cartier liked my money, just fine...and Omega STILL sends me emails to thank me for my three purchases with them. If AP doesn't need my money, I'm perfectly OK with that.
@Justintm6 ай бұрын
So, AP will judge a book by its cover and will not sell you a watch if you don’t fit their image of an ideal owner.

I been buying AP for years back when they had AD’s… The resale was always shit. Lost money on every AP I ever owned. Now they expect us to Sniff their arrogant holes and waste time for multiple visits? Let’s see just how long this model lasts… anytime I have visited the boutique in Miami when in the area the staff is so arrogant it makes me sick… They still need to sell pieces to stay in business now more than ever with more corporate boutiques to support. If I really wanted a certain model, I would just go gray instead of playing this stupid game trying to make friends. Who has the time for that shit over a watch?

There are two problems with the APRO: 1. It is almost too iconic, and as a result most of the ones you see around are counterfeit. This takes away from aspirability, ownership status or watch snobbery that watch people enjoy. It is very common in any place where legitimately wealthy people or poseurs gather. 2. The watch is so popular that it will eventually go out of fashion, which will kill resale values and deeply wound the AP brand (which is too reliant on one model line). 15-20 years ago, wearing an APRO was pretty cool, especially the non Offshore versions. Now, it almost feels gauche. It’s not a watch that commands as much respect among watch people anymore. Any overly tattooed Instagram clown or his Russian girlfriend wears one now (real or fake).
