Atari's 8-bit computers were designed in 1977 and 1978, about three years before the Commodore 64. They should have been obsolete by that time.

Very impressive! as a software engineer of 30+ years and an Atari putterer of even longer, I find myself dying to know how each effect was achieved. Makes me want to finish up some things I started in the 80s. ;-)

From someone more familiar with C64 stuff - this is brilliant. The larger colour palette of the Atari really shines here and it all looks amazing. Had much of what the demoscene does today appeared back in games in 198x we'd have all been completely blown away. Imagine things like rescue on fractalus made then with what people know how to do now. Love it :)

Wow, that Doom thing looks so complete (sky, prison with bars, light effects, etc...) you need to make a real game out of it! The forest with the bird would also make a very nice looking game. Also, was that a HIP plasma you had there? Didn't render properly on my phone, but it seemed like that. Congrats! (thanks for the greetings!)

This demo is f'cking impressive. But there is much more possible. I still don't see all GTIA and ANTIC features. Also, as all parts can run at 64K of RAM, there is apossiblity to run that stuff from disk without breaking the flow of a demo.

Wow, sometimes it seems it's not 8-bit. I use dto have a C64 and I am aware of the limitations; it looks like the Atari had better color palette and also some special FX look impossible to do in the C64. Or is it that the Atari had a much more powerful processor and can do things that the C64 cannot?

Atari 8-bit computers are older machines (1979) than C64 (1982) but have some strenghts (128 colors, taller sprites, overscan, slightly faster CPU). Obviously they have some weaknesses (limited high resolution, lower resolution sprites, 128 characters set).

Yeah, color palette is probably the worst part of C64 - ugly and very limited. Still, an excellent machine that can do different tricks than A8. The soundtrack in Amanita demo is just something else.

Actually, the default maximum used to be 256 colors, but there are demos wringing out over 25,000 colors!

Atari had great coprocessors. That was the curse of many chip designers, especially Jay Miner. He designed perfect, timeless circuits. They didn't need to be changed until they were hopelessly outdated. And then they died with the machine that used them. It didn't matter if it was an Atari 8-bit or an Amiga later. But it's management's fault. The 'exhaust it to the death and then forget it' method was the only way to go they knew... For example, the Pokey could be enhanced to stereo. GTIA and ANTIC could get separated video RAM and allow higher horizontal resolution... Ok, being smart 40 years later isn't so hard...

How did they get the drums to soubd so SID like?

Atari Pokey can be configured with four 8 bit channels, two 16 bit channels or one 16 bit channel and two 8 bit channels. Therefore it can use small samples, just like the SID. SID has 3 16 bit channels. So POKEY can sound close to SID but needs a lot more memory to do so.

Zobaczyłem, zachwyciłem się, wyrażam szacunek. Ale uwierzę dopiero gdy ktoś mi to puści na prawdziwym Atari. Dodatkowy RAM (nawet 1MB) nie stanowi dla mnie problemu. Jestem z tych, którzy akceptują rozszerzenia pamięci w ośmiobitowcach, bo uważam, że w epoce ich RAM był sztucznie obcinany przez księgowych. Zresztą to dotyczy wszystkich platform, nawet wielu dzisiejszych.

Warner Atari was laughably badly managed. Lost Miner and the Amiga. The ridiculously badly designed 5200, which should have been the xegs in 1982. Unfocused, badly managed hardware design and manufacturing, causing 6502 shortages and xl overpricing, too many 2600 upgrade projects, crappy 2600 dev environment resulting in losing best coders to activision, imagic, etc,, rushed crappy coding like pacman, et, defender, etc, unfocused next gen 16bit computer projects, on and on. Tramiel picked up the pieces and had a great hardware run.
