I found one of these cards in a pc tossed out on the side of the road, it had an arctic accelero triple fan cooler attached to it, temps peaked at about 55c under load on that after a repaste. Took one dead stick of ram out of the core 2 quad system it was in and the entire thing booted up and posted and I just laughed.

One of the coolest things about these cards is the digital audio in (white plug next to the power plugs). Once it's enabled in the drivers the audio will be added into the HDMI signal. The Audigy card I used doesn't have a header for digital out, so I soldered a wire to the back of digital out plug and ran it into the video card.

The boot loader in vista+ is pretty solid for dual booting XP. Just install XP first and make sure it's on the first partition. I'll use EasyBCD to fix the naming on the boot menu, it can be done in on the command line too.

The GTX 285 was one of my favorite graphics card. so two years ago I bought 3 of them for each 20€ at ebay and put it on my Rampage 2 Extreme with the Xeon CPU. The System was not the best for gaming (at least the graphics cards) but it looked very impressive, especially with the be fat bequiet dark rock pro 3 cpu cooler.

I had the EVGA version of that card with an Intel Core i7-930. I dont have the video card anymore but still have the motherboard and cpu running an 680GTX. System is running an AIO water cooler for the cpu and it is still going. Great video, brings back some good memories.

Years ago i had the GTX 275 from Sparkle ( It had a white cooler, it was so cool ) and i was surprised by the performance ( specially because i bought it used for really cheap ). With a small oc ( didnt touched the voltages, i easily reached the limit of the cooler ), in Windows 10, it could run GTA V in 1080p, with the lowest possible settings you can set ,at 50ish fps. Anyway thanks for reviewing this old beast. I always wanted a GTX 285 but it was too expensive. Even today its not cheap for the performance that it offer ( i read that you could flash a bios for using it on some Mac Pros. Probabily thats the reason ) and yeah, as u said, a 750 or a 650 would be better but they are not the 285. There is something so fashinating about those old high-end components that i cant really explain.

G'day Rudy, What CPU & M/B are you thinking of, my current XP PC is a C2Q9650 with 4x 1GB 800MHz DDR2, Gigabyte GA-G33M-S2 & GTX260SOC, I use it for C&C Generals & converting Analogue to Digital, I can do Records, Cassettes, 35mm Film & Slides, but have a Ultimate XP build in the works too, I thought about a GTX960 but ending up going with a EVGA GTX780Ti SC with EK waterblock, using TechPowerUp GPU DataBase, GTX780Ti is the most powerful XP compatible GPU 165% compared to GTX960, when I was buying here in Australia GTX960 were generally over $100AUD (although I have seen some under since RTX3000 & RX6000 release) I got the EVGA with the waterblock delivered for $150, so I was very happy spending the extra, I will be using a Coolermaster 120mm AIO that I have replaced the tubes to include the GTX780Ti in the loop, I also have an EVGA Z68SLI Micro M/B & have to do some testing in XP whether I go with my i5-2500K, i7-2600K or i7-3770K 🤔???😁

In 2011 I bought a quadro FX 4600 for 200€, which has the same core as the 8800gt. I applied a passive cooler HR03 from thermaltake. It served me well in GTA IV and CAD until it died in an electric hazard and got replaced by a fanless 750ti palit kalmx in 2017. today I am on a 1070.

Hello Phil! I actually made very similar build at the beginning of this year to celebrate Windows 7 EoL. I managed to install my copy of Windows 7 exactly on January 14 :) I have what I would consider top of the line 2009 components: Phenom II X2 550 unlocked to 4 cores and overclocked with HTT to 3,75GHz MSI 790FX-GD70 (basically the best MSI board I ever had. Even though I have mixed feeling about MSI boards, this one blows away AM3 Asuses and Gigabytes) 2x4GB of DDR3 memory @ 1600MHz CL9 1T GeForce GTX 280 at stock clocks undervolted from 1,18V to 1,11V Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi with 5,25" front panel I have it dual booting Windows XP and Windows 7. With 185.44 driver under Windows XP old games compatibility goes far beyond Far Cry ;) I tested all the games I know that make trouble under Windows 98 with late Nvidia drivers. Monster Truck Madness and Croc throw some artifacts because of crazy high framerates, but after forcing v-sync on for those titles, they work! And those are DirectX 5/6 games without any additional tweaks or patches. Need For Speed 3/5 works out of the box with NFS4 giving usual Windows XP problems that are fixable with additional patches. Midtown Madness 1/2 and Rayman 2 do not have any problems. Heck, even Star Wars I: Episode I Racer works and this one is known for its problems. Oh, and of course in every game D3D is enabled, so 3D acceleration is working properly. GTX280 gave me a lot of problems. When it arrived it just kept sitting at 105*C under 3D load no matter what. After disassembly I found that thermal pads are partially broken, but I didn't have replacements back then so I just repasted the GPU. That allowed me to use this card somewhat, but under artificial load (FurMark) it just kept sitting at 105*C. The reason is that GTX200/400/500 series of cards have heat spreaders just like modern CPUs and there is simple thermal paste used - just like with Intel's few generations of CPUs. I managed to take it off on my GTX 560 Ti but I do not want to repeat this procedure, as it requires a lot of force and during that process I thought that card won't work again. And I took IHS off from 3770k and 7800X CPUs before that to give you some perspective. Finally I settled for undervolted settings with custom fan curve stored in BIOS I made myself. That keeps temperature around 90*C in FurMark with 18*C ambient. Note that those cards precede any kind of turbo/throttling mechanisms, so it is going full blast in FurMark exceedings its TDP. Those temps are still very high comparing with old GPU-Z screenshots found on net (my cards GPU is 35*C hotter than its PCB, comparing that to ~10-15*C difference when card was new) and suggest problem with thermal compound between GPU and heat spreader. But hey, in games it sits around 70*C so I think thats ok :) All in all, this is great piece of hardware. Together with K6-III+/Voodoo 3/AWE32/GUS build it allows me to play all the games I ever played as a kid ranging from late 80' to 2010. All other games I can run just fine on my modern PC. GTX280 and its early drivers surprised me with great compatibility with older games I wasn't expecting. I just wanted to share my experience with you. Through years I have come to similar as yours conclusions and made very similar builds as yours. I enjoy watching your videos and appreciate involvement in many projects. I had 2 of those also. Remember benchmarking Space Marine and not believing the results I was recording. Figured ... why the fuck did I even buy TWO?! That PC lasted quite a while though. In fact the next time I upgraded it was to SLI 670's, and I still got some resale value on the 295's.

Recent Rufus versions do the work for you to get an XP ISO bootable and working without any headaches. Easy2Boot didn't always work for me with XP ISOs with netbooks, for instance. the Rufus blessed drives had no issue. Not sure if you've known that but it's a good thing to know now in 2020.

I had this exact same card back in the day. Sadly, it was overheating and I had to remove the shroud and slap a couple of 12cm fans on top of the heatsnik to manage the heat. I used it all the way up to the end of 2012 when I upgraded to a 660 Ti and all my games ran on it pretty well.

I run a set of 280s in SLI but use the e8400 on P45 chipset. My I7 940 is right now a file server. And the e8400 is a little bit under powered but still does alright. It can play most of these games with pretty much the same experience. Windows XP will start to have ram addressing limitations with some games and settings on SLI as well, but for the most part it works ok. Reducing my CPU to an E7200 (2.93ghz 1066 bus 3mb cache) is slightly less performant than the E8400 but still provides a great experience. SLI however takes a larger hit though. And I am curious to dig out a lower core 2 and see how much SLI overhead becomes a factor.

if you use far cry silentpatch on modern os, you can get water reflections and it fixes the issue and i've heard that dx10 optimization is horrible in fc2 and by the way, you cannot get race driver grid anymore on digitally due to expired licenses

I found on my XP machine, with the original Far Cry DVD, that the water issue and all the messed up graphics issue seems to happen on Nvidia cards, as much as I love Nvidia, my XP machine is skt478 so it's AGP, I have a 7800GS, a 6600GT and an MX440 and they were all the same, but the problems don't appear with my ATI cards, 3650, 4650 and 3850 all ran Far Cry really well with all the graphics in tact.

Had this card from new back in the day. Long story short, this beauty was my daily driver for the best part of seven years. If not for its eventual failure, i probably would still have been using it, if not for the issue of its lack of dx11 preventing me from running Alien Isolation, and the unsolved crashing with team fortress 2.

Kind of ironic valve removed the DRM from the Steam version of HL2. The sole purpose of Steam in the early days was to be HL2's DRM. Gabe Newell was HATED for it.

Also, have you got any opinion on the unofficial WinXP SP4? It upgrades your XP installation with all fixes and updates released until XP EOL, and while it is stabile and easy to use I see a massive hit in my single threaded CPU-Z benchmark score.

RE: NFS Underground on GOG. Unfortunately it'd be a nightmare to get on there as it's not just the game that's a factor. The cars, tuner brands, and soundtrack would all need to be re-licensed before it could be sold again. It does suck for us that'd love to play games like that again, but just an unfortunate reality of games with licensed content. Same reason none of the Gran Turismo games were on the Playstation Classic.

We still have it. My GF gave it a name based on the character in the sticker and the card served us well all those years. Now it's in a legacy support machine running xp and Vista which feels so perfect after watching this video . : ) I might consider adding the soundcard though, EAX is amazing.

At the time, I had a 275 GTX CO-OP, it had a 275 and a 250 on a single card. The 250 dedicated for physX. It had the Joker on it and came bundled with Arkham Asylum. Unfortunately it died a few years back... The 200 series do not have good life span unfortunately I think this is still part of the cracked bga solder era. I did pick up two 285s a few years ago to stash away for Windows XP but the 700 series already seems to perform so we'll for XP haven't run into compatibility issues.

When I graduated from college, I used some of the gift money I got to treat myself to an XFX GTX 285. It was a great card. Though it was not cheap, it was still way cheaper than modern day "80" class GTX cards. I wanna say I paid around $300 U.S. new for it. My memory could be a little off. I remember playing Dead Space on it as well. The original Left for Dead got a lot of play too. It was a great card, though toward the end of its life, it had some problems with overheating. Great memories.

I never even considered it... I used my 980x up to a pretty recent time, with up to a GTX 1080 without ANY bottleneck whatsoever. Usually it was paired with a 1060 6GB and then a 1070 for a bit. The 1080 was a test more or less, and it tested beyond well. But I then moved on to the current ivy e system that I still use to this day, with a 2070... with zero bottleneck whatsoever as well of course (at all res this time, not just 1440 and up). Which will soon have a 3070, and surely do just fine with it as well. The next step up will be 6th or 7th gen tops... but likely I'll skip that, keep with ivy e for a good bit longer, and jump into a pcie gen 4 system once there are a handful of them in the used pile as well. It's already proven that the 30 series don't saturate a 3.0 backbone, so being 4.0 compatible really means nothing. Like having an AGP card with a PCI to AGP bridge on it... yeah it's agp, but it's also not... at all. Yeah these new ones are 4.0... but they also aren't ... at all. But I never considered using my 980x for an XP system... I have all the parts laying around, even a GTX 260 with the oddball 1.76GB DRAM from an Alienware A R1. This with all the slower ddr3 I have laying around, or even the 920, 930, or 960 cpu's ... they'd all make for a great fit. And maybe then... MAYBE THEN... I could finally play Rocket Jockey. Not sure if it'll install on XP or if I have to go all the way back to 9X. . . IF it MUST be 9X, then I'll continue to accrue all the bits I want for the perfect retro machine, but if it could work with a 6C/12T monster, the same core and thread count I've stuck with ever since, with Sandy and then Ivy and then Ivy e, then that'd be amazing! What a beast that'd be for blasting through any older game!

The best part about this card is the ability to run older drivers giving you great compatibility with early xp games and even windows 98 games running on xp. Great video Phil!

Love the video. I think you should really look at some of the patches, hacks, or game engine ports to give some modern look to these games and many are not that hard to setup. For example, there is a site that has widescreen fixes for most NFS games. I play them in ultra wide 2560x1080 and they look awesome. GZDOOM will actually find your original DOOM games (including Heretic and Hexen) from your Steam or GOG library and it is click and play, even supports Sound Canvas VA. I turn off the filtering for that satisfying pixel look. Again, awesome in ultrawide. For Wolfenstine 3D, I hda to find the latest dev build. The released version still doesn't support 2560x1080. Farcry's fixes fix the water reflection issue in Win 10. Doom 3 however, XP with EAX is the way to go. Fixes that re-enable EAX do not sound right and causes graphical issues. Maybe it doesn't like RX 580? Don't have a modern nvidia card to compare.

Hi Phil. I still have 2 of these video cards. 1 is in my email pc and runs most videos pretty well even on Windows 10. Not used as a gaming video card, just a display. I actually used one of these for a month in 2016 and it actually ran the games I played pretty well at 768p. I think I took it out of my computer because it it struggled/sluggish at browsing the web. For Mirror's edge it drops down to 45 FPS with PhysX enabled when you first meet your sister and the guards break a bunch of glass at least at 768p. To me this is peak XP. The Vista era was really an extended XP era given the sheer amount of people who "downgraded", so even 2008-2010 era I consider period accurate. To be fair, a lot of Vista's issues were lazy manufacturers claiming Vista compliance without real testing and I do respect Vista as an OS, but there's something poetic about higher end hardware on a more efficient and well tuned OS. I had 2 GTX 285s in SLI on an E8600 EVGA Nforce system, while that one awaits replacement of some visually hidden blown capacitors I have a single one with a single i5-750 for a "top tier Core 2 Quad" system running XP with the Daniel K PAE patch to allow for a full 4GB system RAM. Asus mobo with 8GB physical memory in dual channel along with a frankly ridiculous array of components, I've never had a better XP experience.

Good one, Phil, enjoyed the video very much! Regarding the GTX 750/750Ti recommendation, they are not very good for a Windows XP retro PC. I actually had a GTX 760 in my Core i5 2500k retro PC, and I recently replaced it with a GTX 285 because of visual & performance issues in many games (in Far Cry, besides missing/corrupt reflections even in Windows XP, there were serious single digit FPS drops in certain areas). The problem, as always, are the drivers. For the GTX 7xx cards you need much newer drivers (3xx.xx), which break compatibility with older games, while the GTX 2xx can use older 18x.xx drivers that work great with games as early as 2001. So, from personal experience, if you want an "ultimate" WinXP retro PC, stay away from newer cards. :)

I agree with you on that older drivers, or drivers closer to the year of games, are the best option. Bit I haven't had issues with the GTX 750, but then I only test a handful of games...

Nice video Phil. My curent xp gaming build is an Fujitsu esprimo c2d e8400 4gb ddr2 use xp32 bit so limitation is 3gb and radeon xfx HD6850 1gb ddr5. 500gb hdd very cheap and perform well.

You can unlock the majority of the Very High Settings of Crysis for DX9 in Windows XP. I remember doing this with a HD3870 in Windows XP. It still runs better than the DX10 version because dof and motion blur were DX10 features but who really misses these things?

I never owned a gtx 285, I always grew up on console, but I tried PC for a change of pace recently, and I like all the customization that PC has to offer. I like that you can play older games from the ps1 -ps2 era and newer games too

GTX285 is great XP card, but no so much for Vista or 7. I found out that in any NT6 system its impossible to force-enable TRAA when you are using MSAA. Its a good thing and can improve some visuals (fences, foliage, etc) in many games. But for some reason, Nvidia never bothered implementing it correctly for the DX10 card on NT6. It works fine on Fermi and newer. Perhaps its because almost none used Vista and everyone sticked with XP till 7. And once 7 hit none cared about the DX10 cards anymore. Funny thing is I had 285 back in the day, but I returned it and took the 55nm GTX260 216SP, cause after overclock the performance was almost the same but price was 60% lower.

This video reminded me that I actually have a BFG Tech GTX 285 in the closet. A relative was cleaning out some of their old PC parts and gave it and an EVGA 8800GT (Along with their old AM3 build with a Creative Xfi sound card) to me sometime last year because they knew I liked messing around with old PC parts and they were upgrading their PC. I really need to play around with it sometime but I have other retro PC projects taking up my time, as well as building some modern PCs and just otherwise being preoccupied in general. I thought about maybe pairing it with a LGA 775 motherboard with a Core 2 Quad (or the AM3 motherboard, haven't decided) that used to be my sister's old PC if I were to ever play around with it. Something to think about for the future I suppose. I'm looking forward to messing around with another Xfi that I have set to be in a build I have planned for the near future though, I'll have to look at the Xfi driver you mentioned in the video.

I have two of them in my basement somewhere, along with an X58 Classified and an i7 980X. Man, what a kiler combo that was at the time, the 980X overclocked like a champ, I remember running it @ 4.6Ghz. Pretty sure if you hooked up that CPU and mobo to a decent contemporary GPU it would still be good enough to play all but the latest games.

I have an EVGA GTX 285 in my Phenom II X6 1100T with 8GB RAM and the X-Fi Fatality (probably the same card but with metal shield). Talk about overkill. Farcry at Ultra and 1600x1200 never dips below 100 FPS. Another good build to do is a high speed Core 2 Duo or Quad, generic DDR2 or DDR3 and a GTX 465. All spare parts I got free and really cheap.
