"less than 20 FPS - a slideshow" - this is how I played most of the games between 1997 - 2001 and really didn't care about the framerate, I was just enjoying the game, the storyline :-)

to be fair, most people were having that experience with consoles as well until the most current generation started; the 360/PS3 gen was especially notorious for really bad performance.

Still rocking an AMD A10-6800k @4.8ghz. Originally bought a Radeon 6670 to do hybrid crossfire and didn't last long. Rocking an Asus Nvidia 960 and it's alright til this day. Will upgrade to a whole new system in a year or so but for now it works for any game I like.

I used this APU for YEARS. Once I paired it with a GTX750TI I was able to play almost any game from Steam besides the triple A titles. But all the survival games like Ark, Minecraft, Raft, etc ran fine on medium to high settings. I upgraded a few years ago and now I am considering using this old processor to build a dedicated game server.

I wouldn't say is a beast, I had one of those but with an FM2A75 motherboard (the A85 chipset used in this video came later). I bought it because I didn't have money for a dedicated GPU at that time, and AMD processors cost way less than Intel ones. It served me well, I got a dedicated GPU almost a year later. I still have it in a closet, I put it in a new case last year because my wife needed a PC to work at home. It didn't perform as good as I remember for regular office work, I think Windows 10 now needs more cores to run smoothly nowadays. My wife has a new PC now so it is back into the closet.

My partner's computer she bought in 2012 when we first started dating was an AMD A10 APU in a tiny slim Acer and it was alright. Only got rid of it because as time went on it would run hotter and hotter (yes I changed out the thermal paste, know what I'm doing, etc.). Windows 10 was just demanding too much of it maybe. It was sold with Windows 8 and got the free upgrade I believe. We both played a lot of Diablo III on our computers and it handled it just fine.

Lovely spring saturday morning, Hot coffee and Phils new video. Life is good! :) Interesting platform for a HTPC & XP gaming rig. I am using a R3 2200G right now as HTPC (2x8GB 3333MHz cl.16 Samsung mem and it kicks arse in GPU performance), but I would really like a MB with a PCI slot - for my High Fidelity (studio-grade) Soundcard. I see that this MB has one PCI. But of course the A10 APU is a lot slower all around. So a compromise to think about. But have not yet been gaming on my HTPC (Though is the PC we use the most in the house) ;)

You should OC the NB, for RAM @ 2133 you need to get the NB to at least 2200 or 2400 Mhz. Just by increase the NB clock you can increase your memory read, write, copy performance by up to 1GB/s for every 200 MHz increment in the NB alone. The Piledriver FX also act very similarly, fast RAM and fast NB can net you good chunk of FPS increase and response time.

ATI/AMD drivers use specific versions of InstallShield, which only work under XP-SP0, or XP-SP1 or XP-SP2. You can sort of directly install from the hidden drivers directory but it doesn't install the dependencies right. Also the drivers on the website were never well maintained after the 2005 ATI acquisition by AMD. The best drivers are the ones that came with the hardware on a CD. I'm very stubborn and have kept trying to figure out ATI vs XP-SP combinations.. but I understand when people give up. DirectX version 8, or 9.0c also matters quite a bit. I wish there were a place to share and trade driver information, but vogons is the only place I know about right now.

It's funny though, the driver does install all the other components, just not the display driver. It does install CCC though.
@joey_after_midnight
@joey_after_midnight 4 жыл бұрын
@@philscomputerlab Yeah.. I know exactly what your seeing. I couldn't believe it for a long time. Then I tried XP-SP0 and it went through smoothly. Its not just exclusive one-way, the updated installer won't work on XP-SP0 either.. so its maddening. You have to find the specific XP-SP0 installer and know it, or the specific XP-SP1 installer and know it. The CDROM labels kind of "hint" at it with their versions but not all the time. It drives you crazy. But once you know it for certain you can work around the problem. XP service packs changed the kernel, so XP-XP0 versus XP-SP2 are actually different operating systems, ATI was tightly partnered with Microsoft so they could take advantage of things Nvida and other graphics makers could not.. that appears to have had benefits and penalties when releasing drivers. They are very tightly tied with the specific version of XP installed, SP0, SP1, SP2 ect.. You can't assume the latest driver was supported with XP-SP2 because the driver may have ended updating before XP-SP2 was available, it could be a XP-SP0, or XP-SP1 driver. Also tightly bound to the kernel problems could creep in trying to update the next SP version after installing the driver. Microsoft used ATI hardware to prototype their operating system, so ATI is fastest and best.. but it had problems this many years later when we want lots of flexibility between major service pack releases that were many years apart. I use an imaging tool like Macrium reflect to install XP-SP0, or XP-SP1, SP2 and test the driver and label it as for use with that version only. But that might add a Lot of overhead for you.

Hi Phil!! Good video, I had (I still have it indeed, but its not in use right now!) one of them, back in 2013. I bought it recommended by someone who promised me that with it I wouldn´t need a video card. Ok that was not true, by any means so 6 months later I ended up adding a gtx 660, so I really missed a big part of it, you know, the integrated graphics. Back then, I heard lot of people hating it for not being more powerful than an i3 in single core task and stuff, but my experience with this proccesor was really good, it never threw my 660 back and bottleneck, if there was some, was not really noticeable. So when retirement time came in 2017 (I was about to go intel but ryzen fell from the sky and I couldn´t resist, stilll goin strong with AMD in the third gen now, with a r5 3600. Not a fanboy) the a10 5800k left a good taste in my mouth, it was a good chip that fullfilled it purpouse very good. So its still in a box with other things, waiting to be awaken again for some proyect like a retro machine in the future or why not, as a secondary pc if needed!!

Nice Phil! I'm using my Dad's Lenovo desktop PC which has an A10-6700 APU. We got it 6 years ago, and it runs really well, although I don't know if I should try to game on it.

Really interesting benchmark. Moreover, as an A10-5800K owner, we didn't talk about overclocking the chip to get more performances (Ocing the GPU, requires a DVI connector, search for Christian Ney guide), and its undervolting. You can easily undervolt it at 1.10 V and still don't have problems.

I remember playing some racing game, colin mcrae 1 or 2 if I remember correctly, and everything was perfect but the car had absolutely no wheels to speak of. Think I had an AMD K6-2 300mhz at the time with 64mb ram and an ATI rage pro 8mb. Also played CS with it :D

Hey Phil!, big fan of your videos, especially the ones on retro hardware, you influenced me to build several unique retrobuilds (Four, three using 3DFx and one, a Matrox G400 MAX with a voodoo2 24MB SLI config) Im one of the "older" crowd you mentioned in the last video you posted, I have a 5th build in the works using a Voodoo1 and Pentium Overdrive 83 on a rare 486/PCI motherboard you might be interested in. Anyway though im rambling if you ever come across one or wana borrow mine, I for one would be interested in seeing a video on one.

For a low consumption machine that runs 24/7, you need a laptop. Or a desktop built from laptop components like NUC style mini PCs. You can idle a powerful PC at 10W, or an Atom x5-Z8300 closer to 5W.

I had a FM1 APU mini itx platform for my XP needs, it just died. Now I'm using an Athlon 5150 AM1 APU that is good for 30 fps on NFSU. I plan to find a FM2+ ITX platform to keep my XP rig compact and powerful.

i have run an A10 6800K for years @ 4Ghz with the IGPU at 1100MHz, a stock cooler and 2400MHz ram. downclocking the CPU gave me thermal headroom to overclock the GPU and what i was playing at 720p on a 1280x1024 screen ran fine for me.

the introduction area in oblivion is much easier to run than the rest of the game. I remember playing oblivion on a AMD sempron 2000+, 1GB ram and a Geforce 3 TI200. The introduction part was just fine and when I came into the world it just lagged to hell.

Like this idea to have dual system setup. But really want to see Vista and XP, like Doom3 and FarCry for XP, and Crysys, Stalker, FarCry2 for Vista on such systems. Also like your idea to use it with modern OS, like multimedia system and to play GOG games. Very good that you share your experience with us. See you soon in another video)

These easily get the job done today. Not going to run the latest games, but my work machine runs on an Athlon 870K and my media PC in the living room is a 6800K, which is just a newer iteration of the 5800K. Get the fastest RAM you can get for these. AMD 15h APUs can really use the all the bandwidth they can get, both for the CPU and GPU sections. They run great on Linux if you're interested in that.

It's a quad-core if you calculate Integer and a dual-core with HT when it process floating point. Also some cache is Hyper Threaded, some cache is in common, this architecture from 2011 is a kinda mess, but it does the job fine.

i just moved to Ryzen 5 2600 from this APU running at 4.4GHz, while i wasn't using it without dedicated gpu, I played through Tomb Raider (2013) on dual core A6-5400K with integrated gpu, I'd call it comfortable with 720p@30FPS

Noticed this APU supports hybrid crossfire with the HD7570 that you featured in the low profile windows XP GPU video. Might be worth a benchmark to see how close to the claimed 80% extra performance it gets. I just picked one up on eBay to have a go with my 7570!

Literally my son's old APU. I upgraded my rig and gave him my 7700k. He was able to game just fine on the A10 once I found someone selling a GTX 960 for dirt cheap. He mostly plays Fortnite and it did fine once it finally loaded in, but when joining a match he would join right as the battle bus launched. Without the GPU he couldn't play much of anything at playable frame rates. He's quite happy I upgraded and he got my old board & ram though

If nothing else, this platform is really rather excellent for home server use. I have a Gigabyte GA-F2A88XM-D3H with an AMD A6-7600K, nearly silent, and with 8 SATA ports it was a bargain.

Its actually not bad for what it is. Could you do a video explaining what directX levels are and/or what they do? It took years to me to understand why some games froze / crashed or simply stated that I dont have DX11 support (even tho my gpu had) until I found out what they where and why, it was cuz my laptop gpu didnt had the DX11 level needed to run 'em.
