I wouldn't say is a beast, I had one of those but with an FM2A75 motherboard (the A85 chipset used in this video came later). I bought it because I didn't have money for a dedicated GPU at that time, and AMD processors cost way less than Intel ones. It served me well, I got a dedicated GPU almost a year later. I still have it in a closet, I put it in a new case last year because my wife needed a PC to work at home. It didn't perform as good as I remember for regular office work, I think Windows 10 now needs more cores to run smoothly nowadays. My wife has a new PC now so it is back into the closet.

But have not yet been gaming on my HTPC (Though is the PC we use the most in the house) ;)

You should OC the NB, for RAM @ 2133 you need to get the NB to at least 2200 or 2400 Mhz. Just by increase the NB clock you can increase your memory read, write, copy performance by up to 1GB/s for every 200 MHz increment in the NB alone. The Piledriver FX also act very similarly, fast RAM and fast NB can net you good chunk of FPS increase and response time.

ATI/AMD drivers use specific versions of InstallShield, which only work under XP-SP0, or XP-SP1 or XP-SP2. You can sort of directly install from the hidden drivers directory but it doesn't install the dependencies right. Also the drivers on the website were never well maintained after the 2005 ATI acquisition by AMD. The best drivers are the ones that came with the hardware on a CD. I'm very stubborn and have kept trying to figure out ATI vs XP-SP combinations.. but I understand when people give up. DirectX version 8, or 9.0c also matters quite a bit. I wish there were a place to share and trade driver information, but vogons is the only place I know about right now.
@philscomputerlab4 жыл бұрын
It's funny though, the driver does install all the other components, just not the display driver. It does install CCC though.
@joey_after_midnight4 жыл бұрын
@@philscomputerlab Yeah.. I know exactly what your seeing. I couldn't believe it for a long time. Then I tried XP-SP0 and it went through smoothly. Its not just exclusive one-way, the updated installer won't work on XP-SP0 either.. so its maddening. You have to find the specific XP-SP0 installer and know it, or the specific XP-SP1 installer and know it. The CDROM labels kind of "hint" at it with their versions but not all the time. It drives you crazy. But once you know it for certain you can work around the problem. XP service packs changed the kernel, so XP-XP0 versus XP-SP2 are actually different operating systems, ATI was tightly partnered with Microsoft so they could take advantage of things Nvida and other graphics makers could not.. that appears to have had benefits and penalties when releasing drivers. They are very tightly tied with the specific version of XP installed, SP0, SP1, SP2 ect.. You can't assume the latest driver was supported with XP-SP2 because the driver may have ended updating before XP-SP2 was available, it could be a XP-SP0, or XP-SP1 driver. Also tightly bound to the kernel problems could creep in trying to update the next SP version after installing the driver. Microsoft used ATI hardware to prototype their operating system, so ATI is fastest and best.. but it had problems this many years later when we want lots of flexibility between major service pack releases that were many years apart. I use an imaging tool like Macrium reflect to install XP-SP0, or XP-SP1, SP2 and test the driver and label it as for use with that version only. But that might add a Lot of overhead for you.

Hi Phil!! Good video, I had (I still have it indeed, but its not in use right now!) one of them, back in 2013. I bought it recommended by someone who promised me that with it I wouldn´t need a video card. Ok that was not true, by any means so 6 months later I ended up adding a gtx 660, so I really missed a big part of it, you know, the integrated graphics. Back then, I heard lot of people hating it for not being more powerful than an i3 in single core task and stuff, but my experience with this proccesor was really good, it never threw my 660 back and bottleneck, if there was some, was not really noticeable. So when retirement time came in 2017 (I was about to go intel but ryzen fell from the sky and I couldn´t resist, stilll goin strong with AMD in the third gen now, with a r5 3600. Not a fanboy) the a10 5800k left a good taste in my mouth, it was a good chip that fullfilled it purpouse very good. These easily get the job done today. Not going to run the latest games, but my work machine runs on an Athlon 870K and my media PC in the living room is a 6800K, which is just a newer iteration of the 5800K. Get the fastest RAM you can get for these. AMD 15h APUs can really use the all the bandwidth they can get, both for the CPU and GPU sections. They run great on Linux if you're interested in that.

at 4:03 One of those Gray RAM slots looked like it had suffered a bit of damage? I saw something copper sticking up where it shouldn't have done... (Or was that just random dirt, hard to tell actually)

It's a quad-core if you calculate Integer and a dual-core with HT when it process floating point. Also some cache is Hyper Threaded, some cache is in common, this architecture from 2011 is a kinda mess, but it does the job fine.

i just moved to Ryzen 5 2600 from this APU running at 4.4GHz, while i wasn't using it without dedicated gpu, I played through Tomb Raider (2013) on dual core A6-5400K with integrated gpu, I'd call it comfortable with 720p@30FPS

i have this setup, i put in a gpu and it seems to handle things fairly well much better then the chip alone. I use a rx 480 red devil and it ran astroneer really well.

Seeing Windows XP and the old Realtek GUI was a blast from the past. Thanks Phil. AMD FTW! Keep on, keeping on! 💯😁👍

It would be great if you could add something like "Games in the video: Apex Legends, Dirt 3, etc." in the description, just in case you forgot to mention one or if the name is not on the video. Just an idea. Great video Phil, as always! Thank you!

Noticed this APU supports hybrid crossfire with the HD7570 that you featured in the low profile windows XP GPU video. Might be worth a benchmark to see how close to the claimed 80% extra performance it gets. I just picked one up on eBay to have a go with my 7570!

the crossfire was just an excuse toake you buy a ati card

Literally my son's old APU. I upgraded my rig and gave him my 7700k. He was able to game just fine on the A10 once I found someone selling a GTX 960 for dirt cheap. He mostly plays Fortnite and it did fine once it finally loaded in, but when joining a match he would join right as the battle bus launched. Without the GPU he couldn't play much of anything at playable frame rates. He's quite happy I upgraded and he got my old board & ram though

Still using this APU until now. April 2020. :D Thinking for a RAM Upgrade to 16GB 1866 RAMS. Im using 1333Mhz value RAM.

If nothing else, this platform is really rather excellent for home server use. I have a Gigabyte GA-F2A88XM-D3H with an AMD A6-7600K, nearly silent, and with 8 SATA ports it was a bargain.

Its actually not bad for what it is. Could you do a video explaining what directX levels are and/or what they do? It took years to me to understand why some games froze / crashed or simply stated that I dont have DX11 support (even tho my gpu had) until I found out what they where and why, it was cuz my laptop gpu didnt had the DX11 level needed to run 'em.

Excellent video Phil! Maybe you can test next time at 1280*1024 resolution, because that is the resolution most used by 17 and 19 inch monitors with classic - 5/4 - aspect ratio. Thank you.

Nice little chip. Interesting to look back. But the athlon 200ge or 3000g if found at msrp are the better choice.
