I cannot decide whether I wanna become a Clinical Psychologist or Neuropsychologist or Neurologist. Can you make a video comparing all three, including the differences in work life and working hours!! Thank you ❤

So grateful to find your channel. I already have a PhD in education but am feeling increasingly limited in the questions I’m now asking & curious if I should embrace getting a masters in this work to be better learned & also to go farther with my inquiry.

That's great! I came from a non-psychology background, I found it incredibly helpful to shadow a psychologist or consult with several psychologists about the work they do to gague if it was for me. Hope that's helpful.

That's very useful information, I'm so grateful and inspired!! Thank you so much. You provide a really good explanation of what exactly some psychologists do. It's extremely important to understand when you have to choose a career :) Keep it up!

Hey Phil! Hope you're doing good man! I'm graduating here soon and am really in a toss up of where I'm going to go from here. I'm absolutely obsessed with learning about the brain in all ways: therapy, anatomy, function, etc. I've seen a few programs where I could go into neuropsychology however I'm curious as to how the studying of the brain and its mechanisms apply in practice of neuropsych assessments. I'd also really love to work in the pediatric side of neuropsyc but I'm not finding any programs with that sub-specialization. Would I be able to do the pediatric neuropsychology gig if my degree isn't specialized in that? PS Thanks for making these videos man, they really help and inform a lot of people! :)

Great questions! Knowledge of neuro anatomy applies very well to the neuropsych tests learned due to the make up of the questions and how it’s analyzed and scored. Essentially the way people think through problems tells us a lot about functions like working memory, executive functioning and attention so that’s how those mechanisms can apply in practice. As for sub specializations typically it’s common if programs don’t have specific tracks you can still ask them about practicum/clinical experiences because that’s where you can specialize in pediatric neuropsych by gaining those clinical experiences even if the program doesn’t have specific classes. Hope that makes sense. Feel free to ask more questions or contact me through my website at philsarpong.com. Wish you all the best!

Hi! Love your channel! I’m a Psy.S and I’ve been doing psychoeducational testing in the schools. Would really like to branch out. Thinking of returning to complete Psy.D but worried about the amount of I’d have to invest vs. return on salary. Could I consult with you privately? Or is there a place you’d recommend where you can find accurate salary ranges?

- Can I apply to Neuropsychology with a Clinical Master's degree? -There are two other branches related to brain functioning that you mentioned before. Does Neuropsychology have a competitive edge among them? ❤
@philsguidetopsyd

Yes, in the U.S. you can apply to a neuropsychology/clinical psychology program with a masters degree! Typically neuropsychology is known to be the primary specialty for brain function, cognitive or forensic psychology does a lot of testing/assessment too

Hey Phil! I'm going on my senior year of undergrad and torn between IO psychology and clinical psychology for a masters. Is there any overlap in these fields, be that in role or in qualifications? I.e, could a job in IO psychology qualify me for a job as a clinical psychology, and/or vise versa?

Could a degree* in one qualify me for a job in the other
@philsguidetopsyd
@philsguidetopsyd Жыл бұрын
Hi, great question! It really depends on the masters program. There are clinical psychology masters program with a focus in IO psychology which means that the degree would qualify you for both but it would be good to check with the programs first before applying. Some IO psychology programs are not as focused in clinical therapy or research so there would be some additional courses that a student would have to take potentially if they just obtained an IO psychology masters and wanted to go into a clinical position. Checking with the school via email is always good just to make sure. Hope that helps!

@Anonymous-mx8sh I/O psychology is strictly a research degree & you cannot perform any clinical work or treatments with patients/clients. I/O psychologists use their expertise in the design, execution & interpretation of research in psychology & apply their findings to help address human & organizational problems in the context of organized work. I/O psychologists work in private sectors, public corporations, & in government (just to name a few). The ONLY fields of psychology in which you can provide clinical care to patients/clients are: (1) Clinical psychology (2) Clinical neuropsychology (3) Forensic psychology (4) Counseling psychology (5) School psychology Each one of these 5 psychology fields require you to be licensed in order to clinically treat individuals. So, no, an I/O psychology position would not qualify you for a clinical psychology position. These are 2 separate modes of education, preparation, & training.

If I want to go into neuropsychology do I HAVE to go into a PhD clinical psychology program (i wasn’t a fan of clinical psych in my undergrad I was more fascinated by neuroscience and neuroanatomy). Or are there specific PhD programs out there for neuropsych? Google doesn’t really give me the answers I need

to be a neuropsychologist in the u.s., and independent a PhD/PsyD is required in clinical psychology. There are some specific neuropsychology phd programs, but their essentially a clinical psychology program with a neuropsych focused. It's kind of like med school, in order to specialize you go through med school and then in your residency you can specialize in what you want. Psychology is kind of the same thing in that you get the clinical psychology degree (maybe some schools have a neuropsych focus or track) then in your internship you can specialize in neuropsychology. Hope that makes sense, best of luck in your journey!

@philsguidetopsyd

In the U.S. a straightforward path would be to become a clinical psychologist and then specialize in neuropsychology. Neurology requires a whole separate education including a 4 year medical school term and residency after that, so its like having two separate doctoral degrees

Can Neuropsychologists legally use brain scanners ?
@philsguidetopsyd
@philsguidetopsyd 5 ай бұрын
Typically no. MRI technicians and other techs have training in using the equipment. Typically its medical doctors who are trained to understand the imaging from those tests. Neuropsychologists only do paper/pencil tests or computer tests to assess for neurological disabilities like dementia, adhd, dyslexia, etc.
