Just stumbled upon your channel yesterday evening. Feel like I hit the jackpot! Your videos and guidance are so incredibly helpful. I especially have been enjoying your videos about how to improve your reference photo. You have encouraged me to start sketching again and put more time into thinking about my work. Excited to use this new information and practice. Thanks so much and cheers!

Thanks for the technique demonstration. I use a similar technique on my A5 sketch pad but I use a simple ball point pen to force myself to scribble without being able to erase it.

Good one Phil, showing the importance of continually honing drawing skills. Too many on you tube here use projectors and call themselves "wildlife artists". Not! They are just "adults with coloring books", in my view, them saying they want to "get the drawing done, and out of the way, quickly, so they can get on to painting", with the use of a projector, and then tracing the image. They, not knowing of course, that painting IS mostly drawing with a brush, and you never stop drawing in a painting until it is done. Makes me sick to see those guys/gals call themselves "artists"! The worst offenders are the figure painters and wildlife painters. I'm glad I began my painting experience with wildlife subjects, decades ago, it forces you to see and draw well as you demonstrate here. Got many boxes of my wildlife and other subject sketch books filled to the gills (do sketch books even have gills)? LOL. Some "finished" and some with gestures, like you show here. No wonder it, drawing, has been stressed as the Foundation of all art, including sculpture, since Rennaissance times. Without doing your own drawing, the "painting" is just a total fraud in my humble view!! He climbs down from his "soapbox" now, he does!! ;D Good titles for your paintings of chickens: "All Cooped up", "They keep stealing my Babies", and "Working for chicken feed"!! LOL ;D

The drawing is the fun part of the painting, tracing would take the fun out of it. Love the titles!

I love your painting instructions! The main object of my paintings so far have been people. However, I really want to start painting landscape and still life. I have followed your video of palette knife painting and the result wasn’t as bad as I was afraid. Now I want to follow one of your landscape videos, step by step. I spend half a year in a national park of South Africa in a beautiful environment but very different from the one you paint. Most of the year it is very, very dry but during rain season can be green everywhere. Any recommendations which one of your videos should I follow? Thanks, Sonja

thanks Sonja, I do have a landscape video that focuses on painting greens. It’s on my website philstarke.com

Great idea to draw chickens. I have questions, is that a community coop? If not, do your neighbors get free eggs because that rooster would not live long in my neighborhood!! Thanks for the videos and sharing your knowledge.

They are our chickens, the neighbors do get some eggs. Makes up for the racket they make.
