As I age , this song hits more and more. As I lose loved ones and friends to the cruel passing of time, this song makes me wanna hold my loved ones close.

I love your comment. I can relate bigtime. Only a couple of us left. You expect your grandparents, parents, will go. Even a very random death from a crash or whatever, but one does not expect that almost all incredible friends will be gone by their 30's. My best friend/mentor/brother/guy that turned me onto Phish made me a mix that started w this song before I had to move away for a while. It was like "our song". We had been in a petty argument and didn't speak for months. I don't even remember why. We made up that day. Cried together. "See you in year or so brother! Talk soon!" That way the last time I saw him alive. I never saw Phish again either. It's been almost exactly 10 years to the day, and I choke up every time I hear it. Anyway... keep on truckin! Who knows, maybe we get to see them all again. Peace.

The story this song tells always flashes me back to the conversations with friends when we were young. Camping out in a best friend's backyard and staying up late talking about everything from girls, to what we want to be someday, to aliens. The lyrics to this one really are special.

i understand how sum pep's think phish is annoying... but this jam that ends the song, I JUST THINK ITS INCREDIBLE...just when I think I'm "phished" out after 18 years (I'm 33)...trey ends up playing something like this...and the rest follows...he's such a leader. The lights aren't over-theatrical but play more as another instrument ....BUT THIS FRICKIN JAM AT THE END....I'M SUCH A DORK WHEN I FEEL THAT THESE GUYS ARE STILL CONNECTIN SINCE '87.

Lauren, check out law of conservation of mass, "The law implies that mass can neither be created nor destroyed, although it may be rearranged in space, or the entities associated with it may be changed in form, as for example when light or physical work is transformed into particles that contribute the same mass to the system as the light or work had contributed." I have lost so many to addiction and know that darkness, seek the light and you will find Joy that will get you through anything.

Okay...last post...it seems that at 8:30 the whole jam sort of sets the tone for the whole song...mike looks like he's about to blow a musical load!....is there anyone out there with as much spare time on their hands as I have that can back me up on this?!?...lol...or offer an opinion? There's not many phans in florida.

@Conroy13 Жыл бұрын
Nicholas is right, around 5;30 you get the first hint of going into minor key jam out of the main G F C G mixo phrasings of BDTNL solo. 6:05 solidifies this. the ensuing passage up to your 8:30 mark is really all a variation of the same theme (mixing some major in with the "new" trajectory of minor 7th funk solidified at 6:05) i think whats remarkable here is that you can never quite "pin" down where this jam is. the minor framework is clearly the backdrop after 6:05, but the crescendo and evolution of the jam comes from the phrases flickering back to major. around 10m trey picks a wonderful descending major line, which leads into the call and response phrase (major) that he picks around 10:30-11. Around 11:15 he again shifts back to a minor key tone with his wah effect, before finding the thematic peak with some major phrases toward the end (those longer sustained notes peaking at 13:55). This sort of tension and release is what his playing so stylistic and easy to identify as his. Its effortless to build the illusion that we went somewhere- when we reality we just shifted from major and minor modes. i would agree that this is a locked in jam- the fluidity between the major and minor key is impressive and there are clear motif themes trey is picking and the entire band is locked onto. I am not a musical scholar but I have studied Treys playing for 15 years and understand a bit about his modulations and phrasings to build tension and release. This was an excellent example of all that. Very natural and i think the entire band was in flow -- something I don't always say!

My son followed you all around this summer. Great that's fine. He died tragically. I love so many of these songs. However, I'm hoping you are not promoting all kinds of stupid ass drugs.
@Nightwishmaster9 жыл бұрын
Of course not! Trey's drug addiction was what destroyed Phish the first time around (second I guess technically). If he never got himself straight there is ZERO chance the band would have ever gotten back together! Thank goodness too, now that Trey is sober he is killing it again! The whole band is, and its because of his commitment to sobriety that we're lucky enough to have them back.
@crazysteve42849 жыл бұрын
Does this really sound like a song of a band that promotes all kinds of drugs ? And sorry for Your loss
@ryanschmit39489 жыл бұрын
PhunkyPhishPhan Lets be honest if trey didn't get sober he could have very easily died, he was in a real bad spot when the cop pulled him over that night. I had to learn the hard way as well, been legally dead 3 times. Nightmare waking up in a hospital, I'm on the right track now tho and still love phish!
@Nightwishmaster9 жыл бұрын
Clyde Drake Yup. That cop that pulled Trey over doesn't get NEARLY enough thanks from us phans. If you think about it, that cop is probably the number one reason that Trey is still alive and Phish is back and jamming as hard as ever today! Thank you Officer! I don't know what we would have done without you. You are the first step on the path that brought Phish and Trey back to us! :)
