Until relistening to this on a whim late at night, I had forgotten how dissonant/experimental/Zappa-esque Phish could be.

I could be wrong, but seems characteristic of 93-95 Phish

This was also around the time Primus rose to popularity and Trey at least was inspired by Les and the boys before joining forces with him for Oysterhead. Not sure if they toured together or had a meeting of the minds but wouldnt be surprised.

Anyone else ever notice the Black Flag "Swinging Man" tease by Trey at the 9:30ish mark?? I know these guys were influenced by Black Flag at least a little bit due to the album "Damaged" being included in the "Which album will they cover?" roulette during the lead up to the Halloween shows in 2009…this is good.

The best of times for american pop music. Regardless of the genre, the underground in the states in those years had a common artistic goals, creativity, mutual respect and camaraderie.

When Greg Ginn was with Black Flag they were ultimately probably the 1st jam band , listen to "live 1984" Trey definitely listened to them , I don't hear swinging man I get your point however The dead are not a jam band imo However Jerry is God
@newusernamehere47722 жыл бұрын
@@jameskilberg7655 Black Flag was very psychedelic. I believe it was Greg who told Henry Rollins to take LSD "because he's an asshole and it'll help" (check out "Punk Rock Hyenas" on KZbin for more on that, pretty funny stuff and shows Henry knows a thing or two about hyperspace travel now). On the other thing the term "jam band" wasn't really a thing until after the Dead were winding down and Phish was already fairly successful on their own terms. This excludes the Allman Brothers from that category too obviously. Although bands have also been jamming since the beginning of music so the whole term is stupid. If a band is any good at all they typically can and will jam unless it's an orchestra.
