Why aren’t more bands trying to do stuff like this? I feel like there is so much unexplored territory in collective improvisation and basically what people can do together just out of their live responsiveness to each other - I honestly think this is the future of music
@djsjjd153 жыл бұрын
It's nothing new. That is how jazz music has been played for years. The Dead brought it to rock in the 60's. I think with rock music (as opposed to jazz) it is extremely difficult to pull off. I think you need not only a band in which every member is a trained musician who knows music theory (rare in rock bands), but they also need a personal chemistry in a way that is so rare that there have been maybe half a dozen bands in the last 70 years who can pull it off like Phish does. Especially today when labels don't develop bands because they want ready made singles for radio/KZbin play. Phish played for almost a decade before anyone outside of New England knew who they were. It takes a LOT of playing time for this kind of band to develop.

The Grateful Dead did not invent or even really popularise the idea of rock musicians improvising

This jam was especially cool - segue out of 2nd set opener Rock & Roll [Lou Reed song] which they played nice and loose. Solid show, getting their tour legs back after a little break. This kind of improv made my night!

@TheEccentricHippie11 жыл бұрын
Lol, a "blues jam" is complex improvisation? Yes, because wailing on a pentatonic scale over three cycling dominant chords has never been done before. I would urge you to try and isolate each instrument here. Fishman's subdivision of the bar/ridiculous polyrhythms, Mike's ability to shift a groove flawlessly while maintaining harmonic cohesion, Page's modal interplay and unorthodox chord voicings Trey's melodic genius should be more than enough for this to rank w/Bitch's Brew or live John Zorn

Poopman it's OK Phish isn't for everyone. A friend introduced me to them in 93, I didn't get it til 1 day something just clicked, and I am proud to be a Phishhead for about 17yrs. The one thing that keeps me is that there is no 2 same setlists. You never know what your gonna get. I've seen over 80 bands in concert and the shows are very similar to a previous show. Rush dissapointed me the most. With that said we all have our love for music, and we all groove to a different beat.

miles and buddy are legendary but when they improvised they were the only ones on stage doing so, the back up band stuck to a form. In Phish you have all 4 members of the band improvising at the same time to create music. i think you should be amazed at how this sounds so damn good for that fact.

Trey has said in multiple interviews that if he was in the crowd, he'd be watching Fish. His style looks so effortless that casual listeners/watchers don't realize the insane talent behind the kit - but I'm glad he is finally getting the recognition he deserves - in the drum community at least.

@@djsjjd15 The 48 minute soul planet from oak Mountain i believe, was some of the best improv drumming I’ve heard. This tour in general Fish, who always kills it, seems to be taking it to a new level. So damn impressed1
@djsjjd153 жыл бұрын
@@posternutbag4415 I'll take your word for it. I'm boycotting that POS excuse for a song. I hope Soul Planet is a sick inside joke they are playing on us. That song sucks so fucking bad. I don't understand why it is being played live. I don't understand why they are stooping so low. It should have been played once at one of their kids' elementary school musicals and never touched again.
@posternutbag44153 жыл бұрын
@@djsjjd15 3 minutes of the 48 min jam. And i dont hate that song like you. At all. They obviously seem to like playing it and it obviously is leading to some sick jams. I actually liked the NYE soul planet when they made the crowd the ocean and were like on a pirate ship. It was sick live. You seem weirdly angry about a song the band likes to jam.

I wouldn't call this complex improvisation. Miles Davis, or even an extended blues jam from Buddy Guy, THAT's improvisation. I just don't get this, and how Phish have a huge following. But overall, power to them; I respect any band that can hold a note and actually play their instruments. With my (I admit negative) comment I was really hoping to gain some insight as to why people love Phish so much. And lastly... god dammit. I really need to change my username. >:(
@Isaac.Garcia6664 жыл бұрын
Still haven't changed that username eh
@bobscomix4 жыл бұрын
Blues is a very repetitive and structurally simple musical idiom at root,that's not to say there aren't great blues musicians what Phish accomplishes in their best jams is much more subtle and requires keener listening. It doesn't hit you over the head. These guys LISTEN to each other more than any other band I've ever heard and as a result their improvisation is more organic ,fluid and at times like this jam,almost symphonic. Davis has played and improvised with many musicians some session musicians that simply keep the beat and baseline while he rages out. In some other cases,he's had great collaborators,like Coltrane for example. I would say what these guys achieve consistently is greater because they've stayed together. Its a true musical collaboration.and more tonal,so it is for me,more enjoyable than the mostly atonal Davis
