Phlebotomy: Tourniquet Application

This video demonstrates how to correctly apply a tourniquet to a patient's arm for venipuncture. A tourniquet would first be applied to assess the arm for a desired vein. When one is located, the tourniquet is removed. The phlebotomist will then prepare the supplies, cleanse the draw site, reapply the tourniquet, and perform the venipuncture procedure.
Please note, I am wearing my clean lab coat. Never wear the lab coat that is used to process specimens in the lab when walking outside the lab. This is an infection control precaution.

My 6 year old son had his blood drawn yesterday and the tourniquet was very tight and left on for approximately 3 minutes. My son was pushing his arm away until finally at 2 minute mark she was able to put the needle in. Than she had a hard time getting the tourniquet off, maybe it was too tight. Anything i should be worried about, any damage can be done in that time frame to muscles, veins, organs? Couldn’t sleep the whole night.

Yes he can have kidney and heart failure. Just kidding !! You’re overreacting while a tourniquet should only be on for about a minute, 2 minutes is not going to cause organ failure. Might lead to false elevated levels of glucose, potassium on blood test

There a much easier ways. Oh and if the patient had a mastectomy (or even lymph nodes removed), you can still draw their blood on that side. Get your facts straight. I have been doing this for 23 years now.

Awful tourniquet. No where near tight enough. And concentric circles went out (CLSI) in 2017. Back and forth to create friction works best. BD straight needle safety indicats bevel up. Yours is NOT bevel up when you insert. 🤦‍♀️ Taught, not taunt. Very wrong way to hold the barrel when inserting. Anticoagulated tubes need to be inverted immediately!! Your tubes will be clotted. You're pressing down on the gauze before you pull out. WRONG!!! That will slice the vein and hurt the patient. And the gauze needs to be four folded. NEVER flip safety with forefinger. Use thumb which you would have done if you'd had it in the correct placement. NEVER remove barrel from needle!!! Barrel Goes in SHARPS, NOT trash!! HOLY SHIT!!! Needle and Barrel as one unit in sharps!!! HOLY SHIT! Also, it's a barrel or holder. Not a hub. The hub is ONLY the part that needle screws into. Coflex needs to go all the way around so it holds.
