As a patient at a hospital today, I experienced the following: 1. Phlebotomists' gloves were noticeably dirty and I never saw any gloves being changed. 2. Phlebotomist touched the vein. 3. Phlebotomist wiped the insertion area with two or three up and down wipes. 4. Phlebotomist touched the vein again. 5. Phlebotomist inserted the needle and drew the blood. 6. Phlebotomist removed the needle and placed gauze on the insertion point. How many errors do you see here? Please note that the same blood draw procedure happened with two different phlebotomists in the same hospital. Thank you.

I do not think there were any errors aside from the fact that they did not change their gloves. Everything else was good and I've been through phlebotomy many times. I'm also going to take a class on it. Like I said, the only error is the gloves part honestly.

The tourniquet needs to be released right after we see the first tube starting to fill out. :/
@jaybreesh50604 жыл бұрын
Thanks for clearing that up , I was confused on that part cause I know when I get blood drawn they take it off while blood is being drawn already
@Flolic554 жыл бұрын
I mean imagine having 3+ tubes to draw blood flow will come normal if tq is released to soon but as tq cannot be tied over a minute you have to plan it quickly so I agree but depends on njmber of tubes you need to fill.
@kyliaingraffia89574 жыл бұрын
No, the standard is to release the tourniquet right before the last tube, therefore ensuring all of your tubes will fill. If you are working outpatient and the person has great veins, and are healthy then yes because you don't need the pressure. I've worked in inpatient and most people are very sick, therefore for most people I need it to stay on prior to that last tube.
@TheArmedNurse4 жыл бұрын
I don't get the whole OCD thing about phlebotomy. Phlebotomists see 30, sometimes 50 patients an HOUR! We don't have time to cross every t and dot every i. As long as the specimen is obtained from the patient as safely as possible and the order of draw is correct, there is no need to obsess over things like tourniquet usage and hand placement. The patient's comfort and quality of the specimen is paramount. If phlebotomists obsessed over everything, they would not be able to serve as many patients and their performance metrics will fall.

do not listen to this video its all wrong . the serum tube (yellow) draws first then most importantly the tourniquet is to be released after your first tube is is being filled , another thing i saw was that she let go the needle while in patients arm still. NEVER LET GO OF THE NEEDLE while in patients arm . NEVER reach over patients arm either while in the middle of a draw .

The way you inserted the needle how you held it when you inserted it was incorrect.

I don't like this video as soon as she kept the same gloves on without changing to show proper hand hygiene.

Get this phlebotomists see 50 patients per hour in our country it is a room and 5 tables at every one phlebotomist and there is line people get called by any of these 5 to be drawn blood from so the point you don't have time in some cases.

Oh NO!!! Don't ever let go of your needle...ever....ever....ever.....even when practicing...the switching of the tubes should be set up on her right side so she doesn't cross over the patient. Eehhhh...the in and out of the needle and the technique gives me chills...She does give some good information , but I wish she would remake this video.
