@ryancrazy1

@@mr.waffentrager4400 the wing is the part of the plane that stalls. a stall is when smooth ariflow separates from the top of the wing. Instead there is only turbulent air. When that happens the wing cannot produce lift and it stalls. The "fences" will section off areas of the wing so one part may be stalled while another won't be

Mr. Waffentrager The wings of an aircraft are responsible for redirecting air around them and creating a pressure differential which in turn produces lift. The body of the aircraft or fuselage doesn’t produce lift therefore stalling originates on the surface of the wings. Of course this will more than likely cause the entirety of the aircraft to stall however there are instances where on wing or another will stall. Stalling is the separation of smooth air over a lifting surface

AV80R 404 Speeder2345 not entirely sure about that. Wing fences are for “re-energising” the laminar flow section of the wing and maintaining even flow over the airfoil section they’re over, however if the crit angle of attack is exceeded the fences aren’t gonna do jack and it’s up to the slats/slots to keep it from stalling. The thing that prevents wings from stalling all at once is called Washout and is used on very modern fighter jets, not a mig15.

But these fences are not designed to do that! In swept wings air tends to slide and not pass over wing. These fences redirect sliding air to rear of wing increasing lift at high speeds. Slots are a way to direct air over wing at high angles of attack at low speed manouvers like landing.
@RichardCasto
@RichardCasto 4 жыл бұрын
CaptainWatson, we may be saying the same thing here. I thought the fences are to prevent problems with deep stall in that swept wing aircraft can have issues with air flowing off the side in stall conditions. This happens on the wing ends first, so center of lift moves forward (pushing nose up) making it harder to recover from a stall. The fences are to help direct flow at higher angle of attack.
@Theawatson10
@Theawatson10 4 жыл бұрын
Richard Casto Correct. Fences delay laminar flow separation (stalling) and help keep the center of lift stable on the wing.
@19Koty96

No, fences reduce tangential airflow (the flow sliding along the sweep). It both increases lift and decreases drag. It's the slats that delay stall, later Sabres got the slats removed and instead they have miniature fences. It's a bit of a misconception about the fences circulating on the net, original soviet video-documentation for pilots on swept-wing aircraft explains this phenomena quite well.

The mig-15 has something called air fences on the highly swept wings to make sure air is flowing correctly. Without them the aerodynamics would make it highly unstable, not to mention at high angels of attack the jet shook immensely.
@evanbanks5781
@evanbanks5781 4 жыл бұрын
The earliest models didnt have the air fences it wasnt until the pilots found it unstable on landing that they put the fences on to stabilise the landing more than anything else, the aircrafts original flight characteristics werent actually too bad other than the landing
@diogonunes1865
@diogonunes1865 4 жыл бұрын
The fences on the mig 15 are to guide the air over the wing and prevent from going to the outwards section of the wing (basically it is so that you use more of the wing for generating lift), because air travels to the outwards part of the wing when it is swept. The slats on the f86 are for allowing the wing to get a higher angle of attack without stalling. So two very different purposes. Edit: also you do see those wing fences on a lot of allied jets, specifically those with very high wing sweep angle

The fins on the mig-15's wing are actually used to obstruct the spanwise flow on the wing which prevents the entire wing from stalling. It did have a side effect of increasing airflow over the wing by redirecting the spanwise flow
@qatariexpat6406
@qatariexpat6406 3 жыл бұрын
The fins on the wings are there to keep the airflow on a a sweptback wing from moving outward toward. Without the fins you would still have good airflow but it will move outward over the wing towards the wingtips. With high angle manouvering this cause the wing to stall at the tips first, where also the ailerons are located rendering the ailerons useless. Also if the wingtips stall first and the wing roots are still producing lift, in a sweptback wing it gives a nose up force making stall recovery more difficult. So the fins keep the airflow spread lineaer over the wing making the stall characteristics of the wing easier to recover from a stall

The metal pieces on the MiG15 wings are called wing fences, they are there to keep the airflow chordwise (straight) as the airflow tends to go spanwise (towards the wing tip) on the swept back wing
@MCF2233
@MCF2233 4 жыл бұрын
Youre kindof right. The Slats and wing fences do increase performance at low speeds, but they do it in different ways. The wing fences just keep the airflow flowing over the wing smoothly when it wants to flow down the wing to the tip, which reduces the stall speed of the aircraft since it forces the loss of lift to come from airflow separating from the wing which happens at lower airspeeds than the airflow flowing down to the tip of the wing. The slats reduce the overall angle of attack on the wing, change the airfoil to one with higher lift characteristics, and force air onto the top surface of the wing through the opening between the wing and slat that the slat moving into the deployed position creates.

Wing fences prevent the air from flowing spanwise on those swept wings. Span wise flow reduces the amount of lift the wing can generate as less air flows over the wing from the leading edge to trailing edge ( chord wise flow). Slats are just a way to change to curvature of the wing along with flaps to increase lift while also increasing drag.

Phly: Slats and Wing fences are two different things. the Slats on the F 86 provide airflow over the wings when at a high angle of attack. Meanwhile, the Wing fences found on the Mig are to keep the air flowing straight over the wing and prevent the air form going down the length of the wing negating the swept wing. The F-86 F-2 has Mini wing fences for this reason as well, to prevent from a thing called "Sabre Dancing" when trying to land.

I believe the slats an the fence/fins solve separate problems. For example, NAA used both on the f100d with the wing slats allowing for higher AoA before a stall. Meanwhile, McDD used a dog tooth extension on the F4 to do the same thing as the wing fence; which is to prevent the stall of the entire wing.

Wing fences (as seen on the Mig-15) is to prevent airflow from accelerating and moving down the wing towards the wing tip. It is a stability device not a lifting device like the leading edge slats seen on the F-86 Sabre.
@01howdoidothis
@01howdoidothis 4 жыл бұрын
The side slats are effective because of the material used. The unit you showed with the screens does not stop the kinetic energy of the round it just detonated the heat round while still outside the hull. The slats on the mig-15 are to stabilize the air on the wing, the flaps/leading edge slats provide more air over the top of the wing for lower speed without loosing control and lift. The F-4 is just proving you can make a brick fly if you put powerful enough engines on the plane.

3:22 your right. I believe it was called boundary layer fence. So basically, the airflow in swept wings are both lateral and longitudinal. That results in a shock stall at the ends of each wing which diminishes the longitudinal stability of the aircraft. The boundary layer fence keeps the air from flowing along the wing to the fuselage. Basically forcing the flow straight and not hug the shape of the wing

Hey Phly! Appreciative swede back here again. The metal strips on airplane wings are called Boundary layer fences. It is, as you say, to keep the air going smoothly over the wing, but also to prevent the air from creating to much drag over the wingtip where vortices are created. That is why you have so called winglets on modern airliners. BUT slats and boundary layer fences are not the same thing. Slats are to create better lift at lower speeds together with the flaps. Also, only arrow shaped wings have a use of these fences. So not many WW2.

The slats on the F-86 are used for landing, they automatically deploy by gravity if the airspeed drops low enough. The ridges on the Mig-15 are indeed to keep the airflow going on higher speeds. There were two tricks that allied pilots used in Korea. 1st, drag the Mig in a shallow dive until you hit nearly mach-1. Then the controls of the Mig seized and the plane would crash. 2nd, reduce the airspeed so slow so that the Mig would go in a spin witch he could barely recuperate or crash. With the slats the F-86 could fly slower and still be controllable.

4:23 Lift on a plane wing is generated by making the air flowing underneath the wing move faster that the air flowing over the wing. Not the other way around. When you have air flowing faster over the wing that is called downforce and is what race cars use to go faster in corners on a race track

The little metal fins on the mig-15 weren’t for lift instead they were for landings, without them the plane would be going slow and the crosswinds would make it shake violently (especially with the f-100) so they added the metal pieces to the wing to help stabilize it while at low speeds landing or taking off

@PhlyDaily, since you asked: MiG-15's "wing fences" are there to minimize span-wise flow. They help, among other things, reduce asymmetric stalls - a bunch of other things too which slip my mind right now, but I just woke up. F-86's leading-edge slats are there for high-alpha maneuvering. LE-devices push Max-Lift to a higher angle of attack, and are pretty much required for high-performance fighters.

You're correct the F86 Sabre and Super Sabre have those flaps to allow the plane to slow down enough during carrier landings and not stall as well as to provide stability at low speeds during maneuvers. The Mig15 fins do the same thing essentially at low speed they trap low pressure air above the wing And the reason the fence M60 sucks against HEAT is a that its a late Korea/ early Vietnam Era tank and the fence is really only for RPGs and TOW/KORNET missiles. HEAT shells are usually traveling much faster with more force and a heavier charge so the fence is minimal vs a solid plate used as a spacer. Not to mention the T64 is much newer with heavier/newer armor and its on the hull vs the turret

Simply stated the wing fences/stakes are there to channel the wing over the top of the wing. It does two things. First it makes the wing more efficient. Two it makes the wing more stable in the yaw channel at higher speeds (AKA less squirrely).

The things on the Mig 15 are Callenburgh fences, they are there to prevent tip stall(air flow separating at the wing tips). A tip stall could lead to a loss of aileron control. Slats are there to change the camber in the wing and increase lift. P.s this is not a complete explanation so feel free to add info

The aerodynamic thing on the wings of the MiG-15, and other sowjet planes, is called wing fence or in german, where it was invented, Grenzschichtzäune. But you're right about their purpose, but this problem just occur with v style wings so it was a hardly need solution for the first planes with arrow kind wings.
@bruneauandreas564

The problem with sweptback wing aircraft is that they are very difficult to recover from a stall in fact with this design the stall occurs at the edge of the wing, which means that the center of pressure, which is the place where all the lift is generated moves forward in front of the center of gravity. The result is a pitch up moment, it is called a deep stall. So to prevent the stall from spreading to the whole wing the engineers use the STALL FENCE, this device allows the air to flow smoothly on the wing even whilst the airflow at the edge is turbulent. Another way around are the slats, they re-energize the airflow and allow it to stick to the wing surface at a higher angle of attack they are used on almost all modern airliners and fighter jet nowadays.

The fences prevent the airflow from deflecting outward due to the wing sweep - known as spanwise flow. Spanwise flow created dangerous low-speed/high angle of attack handling issues with many swept wing aircraft of the time. The spanwise flow reduced the "normal" flow of air over the outer parts of the wing, causing a tendency to pitch up and at the same time reducing the effectiveness of the ailerons. This could happen at any speed, but was most commonly seen at low speeds, and was often fatal if encountered during landing attempts (look up some videos on the F-100 Sabre Dane). Slats improved the airflow over the wing at low speeds, but were not specifically intended to reduce spanwise flow (although the mounting tracks/braces did in fact often direct the airflow back to toward the fuselage, having the effect of reducing spanwise flow).
@DexMaster881

Flay wing fences are there to stop lateral movement of air. With straight wing air will go perpendicular to the wing creating max lift. With slanted wings it tends to split into 2 parts trying to go down the edge and perpendicular . This creates turbulence resulting in low lift especially at low speed. Results are Saber dance. Watch F 100 Landing videos. And notice they also have Fences.

Hey PhlyDaily, Those metal fins on the Russian Mig are called Wing Fences, they keep the air flowing better over the wing at lower speeds. Like you said, Russian engineering works on the principle of "simple, but effective". The U.S. went more sophisticated with the slats. They work two-fold, first by increasing the camber of wing to provide more lift at lower speeds. Second, by pushing the air from below the wing up through the slot between the slat and the wing in order to "revitalize" the air flow on top of the wing, lowering stall speed. So your statement was pretty close, minus all the technical jargon. I'm an aerospace engineer, so let me know if you'd like help for your future videos.
