The reason this scene makes you cry, is that it epitomises the triumph of children over grown ups, of freedom over the establishment, of innocence over the dark and sinister forces of the world. And for that reason, it has to be one of the most beautiful movie sequences in history.

True, well said, observed. I just watched it after many many years. I am 47 years old now and I cried immediately as I saw it again. watched it in 1982 when I just started my primary school and had a difficulty in school I remember and my father kindly invited me to the premiere of E.T. We were still in Yugoslavia at that time. The same feeling that I had at that time I had right now when I was watching it. Steven Spielberg created a timeless masterpiece, so influential, a really powerful movie it is E.T.

Saw the re-release in the summer of 1985. It was the first movie I'd ever seen in the movie theatre before, so I was just a little guy. During the part where ET is in the government hospital and dying and they use defibrillators on him, I was crying so hard because I thought he was dying. My mother took me out in the lobby and calmed me down some and promised me that ET would be ok if we went back in. So I go back in precisely at the start of this scene. I can tell you that I was so overjoyed that ET and his friends got away on this bike scene, that it pretty much brings tears to my eyes now (and I'm 35). That's the power of movies, I connected with what they did here and it just took me to another emotional level.

This is one of the only films that still makes me sob uncontrollably even at the age of 42. This film truly stirred something so deeply within me as a child and it’s stuck with me ever since. When it came on the tv at Christmas I used to cry as soon as I heard the theme tune and would have to go away and hide. It’s a masterpiece, really shows the polarity of humanity. The greed and fear of the unknown, also the innocence of kids, along with a real disire to go home.

I saw this at the cinema when it came out in 82. It was a phenomenon. You can see the influence in films like Super 8 and also Stranger Things, if course with the van flip, the d and d and bike chase in series one all nods to Spielberg. I remember collecting Weetabix tokens off of packets to make a diorama of the bike chase finale. Everyone had an ET toy of some description. Going into the cinema (cost about £1,50) and coming out in the dark after seeing this film was a truly magical experience as a ten year old. Happy days.

This and the first flying bicycle scene were my favorite parts of the movie, along with the Halloween scene. When I saw it again on DVD for the first time in over a decade, it was still just as magical as it was at age 6.

Robert Cardoza, Bob Haro, Grant Meyers and David Lee: professional BMX riders who raced through the hills. They were not mentioned in the credits. Riding a Japanese bicycle, Kuwahara. In Italy the BMX phenomenon spread after the release of the film. Until the advent of MTBs.

Many of the houses were still in construction, and several spaces were not yet touched by human civilization. As timeless as this movie feels, it perfectly captures a specific period in time, the early 80's.

When they turned the guns into walkie talkies they took the tension the whole scene built up. Thank goodness Spielberg went back and realized his sins.

There are some theaters that will have midnight movie nights where they replay classics, or at least pre-pandemic there were. My college town's theater did this.

The magic of cinema.. this was one of the peak chapters of cinema history. I dunno why now I rarely see a film's theme around children anymore. Let them to have imaginations. Let them be hopeful. So that they grow up with sense of humanity. Truly Mr. Spielberg is a master of visual storytelling.. and Sir John Williams.. the score was so great, there is little dialogue but this scene can felt emotionally positive.

Time and my goodness I had never watched a film in my entire life that made me cry happily it's sooo good and the music is 10/10 and I remember when I got a bmx I played the bike chase soundtrack and pretended to get chased by cops with et

my god did John Williams earn that oscar for such an epic score. Not as pissed with this scene getting altered as i am with the Original Star Wars getting altered. Sooooo unnesessary. I mean the added CGI, Greengo shooting Hans scene, Joba looking like a pile of CGI dogshit and unlike George Lucas who swept the original (unaltered versions) under the rug and favored the newly enhanced versions (enhanced yah right) atleast Speilberg released this and the new 2002 rereleased version on the same dvd set and demanded both versions! Love how loyal Speilberg is to his material.
