The reason this scene makes you cry, is that it epitomises the triumph of children over grown ups, of freedom over the establishment, of innocence over the dark and sinister forces of the world. And for that reason, it has to be one of the most beautiful movie sequences in history.

True, well said, observed. I just watched it after many many years. I am 47 years old now and I cried immediately as I saw it again. watched it in 1982 when I just started my primary school and had a difficulty in school I remember and my father kindly invited me to the premiere of E.T. We were still in Yugoslavia at that time. The same feeling that I had at that time I had right now when I was watching it. Steven Spielberg created a timeless masterpiece, so influential, a really powerful movie it is E.T.

Lmfao! Bro when I was younger I had beagle that looked similar and indentical somewhat to ET. I use to place my dog in a soda basket my mom got from her job as a cashier clerk. Me, my two brothers and cousins would ride our bikes around the park we lived nearby, people would give us looks and stares that seemed awkward as hell. XD

Saw the re-release in the summer of 1985. It was the first movie I'd ever seen in the movie theatre before, so I was just a little guy. During the part where ET is in the government hospital and dying and they use defibrillators on him, I was crying so hard because I thought he was dying. My mother took me out in the lobby and calmed me down some and promised me that ET would be ok if we went back in. So I go back in precisely at the start of this scene. I can tell you that I was so overjoyed that ET and his friends got away on this bike scene, that it pretty much brings tears to my eyes now (and I'm 35). That's the power of movies, I connected with what they did here and it just took me to another emotional level.

This is the weirdest comment. The exact same thing happened to me. I saw that it was released in 82, I was born in 80, and I'm thinking, could I possibly remember seeing this at 2? The release in 85 makes more sense. When I saw his red heart I thought he was hurting and I was crying so hard my throat was killing me. Even when we were getting in the car to leave, lol. Anyway, weird reading someone had such a similar experience.

This is one of the only films that still makes me sob uncontrollably even at the age of 42. This film truly stirred something so deeply within me as a child and it’s stuck with me ever since. When it came on the tv at Christmas I used to cry as soon as I heard the theme tune and would have to go away and hide. It’s a masterpiece, really shows the polarity of humanity. The greed and fear of the unknown, also the innocence of kids, along with a real disire to go home.

Yeah. 1980s was the start of films became friendly to children (Star Wars started that all).. 1990s was the peak when things were focused on kids (e.g. Nickelodeon, golden ages of Disney, etc).. until early 2000s. Too bad kids these days don't get the same things. It is important to instill a sense of humanity to children.. so they grew up and (hopefully) became good person.

I saw this at the cinema when it came out in 82. It was a phenomenon. You can see the influence in films like Super 8 and also Stranger Things, if course with the van flip, the d and d and bike chase in series one all nods to Spielberg. I remember collecting Weetabix tokens off of packets to make a diorama of the bike chase finale. Everyone had an ET toy of some description. Going into the cinema (cost about £1,50) and coming out in the dark after seeing this film was a truly magical experience as a ten year old. Happy days.

This was the very first film i ever saw. I was born in 92. My aunt gave the VHS to me when i was a few months of birth. Of course i don't remember the first time seeing it, but i remember that it was my favorite movie for a long time. When i was a baby my mom told me that i used to pretend i was et, comming out of the bathroom covered in towels like et and making the noises he made, and saying "et phone home". When i became a kid i pretended to be Eliot while i was riding my bike. I still love this film and get tons of chills with everysingle scene, but specially with this one

One thing I always loved about this scene is where they already started riding away and Greg asks “Where are we going”. Like they literally just met an alien and their friends say they need to get him away and the friends don’t even question it, they just start riding without even knowing where they are heading. Proper childhood friendship goals.

Although I've seen snippets of the movie, I never had the chance to watch it completely. Until last week, when, for its 40th anniversary, it was played again at the local IMAX theater. One cannot recreate the magic of the cinema at home. It was incredible.

I can still hear it till this day .

I wasn't born yet when this movie came out and so I didn't see it until they brought it back to theaters for it's milestone anniversary. The ending scene when the kids are saying goodbye to ET.. that's when it hit me. Tears were streaming down my face. I think this film speaks to the child inside, even if you are much older... It has a special kind of magic.

I was born the year it was released, but didn't see it until it came out on home video a few years later. My grandparents bought me a copy for my sixth birthday, and I wore that tape out. This and the first flying bicycle scene were my favorite parts of the movie, along with the Halloween scene. When I saw it again on DVD for the first time in over a decade, it was still just as magical as it was at age 6.

The magic of cinema.. this was one of the peak chapters of cinema history. I dunno why now I rarely see a film's theme around children anymore. Let them to have imaginations. Let them be hopeful. So that they grow up with sense of humanity. Truly Mr. Spielberg is a master of visual storytelling.. and Sir John Williams.. the score was so great, there is little dialogue but this scene can felt emotionally positive.

my god did John Williams earn that oscar for such an epic score. Not as pissed with this scene getting altered as i am with the Original Star Wars getting altered. Sooooo unnesessary. I mean the added CGI, Greengo shooting Hans scene, Joba looking like a pile of CGI dogshit and unlike George Lucas who swept the original (unaltered versions) under the rug and favored the newly enhanced versions (enhanced yah right) atleast Speilberg released this and the new 2002 rereleased version on the same dvd set and demanded both versions! Love how loyal Speilberg is to his material.
