Hi Coyotes fans! A friendly Florida Panthers fan here. I have always liked your team. I always saw the Coyotes as a very similar organization to Florida. Long histories of terrible ownership groups for both sides. We got lucky with our first good owner in Vinny Viola. I have always been pulling for you all to have a great ownership group, because we could have ended up like your situation. I really want your team to come back and for you all to win a cup, because I was sick and tired of hearing Canadian talking heads talking about how "we" didn't "deserve" a team, because nobody goes to the games. We'll, guess what happens when you get a good ownership group? People start going to the games. Funny how that works out...just know Coyotes fans, I hope you get your team back like Winnipeg did over a decade ago. Hang in there. You all are too big of a market for the NHL to abandon. Love from South Florida!

This is actually good news for hockey in Arizona.. The NHL gave this guy an improbable task and when the five years is up (legally), the process to bring the Coyotes to Arizona will begin with a competent ownership.
@wrenchdoozer4 ай бұрын
The details even made it more improbable for that ownership group, as he had to have an arena 50% completed in 3.5 years before giving notice to the NHL to beat the 5yr expiry. It will be a while before hockey is back, but with strong ownership it will be back.

Depending on whether the league still believes in the market they could, potentially, put the word out that Meruelo's deal could extend to any potential ownership group within the next, say, 6 months. If the interested parties can put together a plan for an arena, within the same 5 year window, they will be granted the rights to the Coyotes branding and history, and stay at the front of the line for expansion at the same fee. Granted, it's a big "IF", that the league is still committed to hockey in the desert, AND I have to wonder if they only made that deal with AM in the first place because they had little faith he could pull it off..
@chrissimmons97435 ай бұрын
I first saw the news of this in the drive thru at Keizer Dairy Queen, and i literally laughed out loud. In all honesty i'm happy about this because i feel like if Meruelo owned the next iteration of the AZ Coyotes (or whatever they end up being called if the Coyotes branding rights stay with him), so i'm glad there's a chance y'all will have better ownership if/when your second chance at an NHL team comes around (which i feel is a matter more if when rather than if considering Atlanta may be getting a third chance while AZ has only struck out once, plus the Phoenix area makes Atlanta look pathetic in comparison when it comes to population/market size, the only real question is if ownership and/or a new arena will come to light at some point, because both of those have happened in ATL in some capacity or another, which is probably why they're getting chance #3).

A clown show! The NHL allowed the Winnipeg Jets to be stolen to Phoenix. Despite the fact the arena in Phoenix wasn’t made for hockey! Or there wasn’t a plan for a NHL arena in Phoenix within a short period of time after the theft. Then came a series of failed attempts at building an arena. U til finally an arena deal was made! But, away from the season ticket and population base! If the clown show team would have put a solid team on the ice, going out to Glendale may not have been a big deal. But since the team struggled, usually had losing records and missed the playoffs, fans became apathetic. If the team is winning, the drive from Scottsdale to Glendale is fine. Then NHL allowed a series of clown owners to buy the team. Then the resident clown, Got evicted from Glendale, got crushed in the Tempe vote, until finally the NHL basically stripped him of the team. Despite my initial hate for the team in Phoenix, I have no doubt with the right owner, arena, and front office/coach NHL hockey can succeed in AZ! throughout the clown show of the Phoenix Arizona coyotes, they have missed one and often times all three of those traits! Fans got the raw deal because the NHL didn’t do the proper vetting on many owners. The last clown ran his other businesses by not paying bills on time. But the NHL overlooked that! Even if Tempe and/or this land auction passed, does anybody really think this clown can build a multi billion dollar facility?
@marcus8135 ай бұрын
The original Jets leaving Winnipeg wasn't a theft. The way things were at the time, they had no chance to stay there. Plenty of Coyotes fans have told me that what's now Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Ariz. is poorly located because it's too far west of where the hockey fans and the area's money are and a non-NFL club setting up shop there was gonna be dicey to begin with. That drive isn't fine for people from Phoenix on east on a typical weeknight based on what people who live there have told me. The Valley of the Sun is spread out, so arena location matters more than you think. A proper NHL arena from Phoenix on east (Mesa, Scottsdale and Tempe could've worked, too) would've stabilized the Coyotes, but that never materialized.

It's not in Miami proper. and the biggest part of their fan base comes from this area. It's suburbia. When the Miami Heat of the NBA won championships it was partytown in South Beach. They have a much of different fan base though than the Panthers do.. Now Inter Miami of Major League Soccer who has the great Lionel Messi playing for their team play in Fort Lauderdale but they draw a lot of people from the Latin community in the city of Miami. If they go on and win MLS Cup which there's a good chance that they will that will be a big deal for the city of Miami..... That's hockey economics. Now Phoenix is just another expansion team wannabe on a list of many others. This is not good for Phoenix hockey fans. In a perfect world when Atlanta is awarded a team a potential owner steps up and is able to secure an arena maybe some kind of dual partnership with the sun's since they're going to build a new arena? In the meantime to fit with the Atlanta timeline maybe they can get back in Glendale temporarily. Obviously the stars would have to align but getting the sun's ownership on board would be the best case. AM walking away? Not sure on that. I believe that he is being shoo'd out by the fans, city and state officials, and business people, and the NHL - he does not seem to be wanted as a business owner in Arizona. I think they are just glad to see him go and help ed set him on his way. I believe that Bettman / NHL saw this coming, expecting that AM would not be successful or wanted, and would eventually take a hike. Set AM up with a $$ healthy way to get out of the NHL's way, in a quick timeframe, and then stepped out of the way for AM to further 'f' it up, opening it up for a more capable and considerate owner. I'm no genius, nor business person, this pretty much seems to have unfolded the way I thought it would, even from where I am in Edmonton. GOOD RIDDANCE to bad rubbish. Now it remains for a new, respected business group to come in and work their magic on Arizona's government and businesses, picking up the pieces left by AM, and lead a new 'Yotes nation. Will need a strong leader, but such a leader would be remiss if he did not get a white horse and place Shane Doan on it and lead them into Arizona. Hail, King Doan! (Oooo! Too much??). I'd like to know who the magical owner waiting in the wings is. What billionaire is going to want to take this on after the politicians and public both actively worked against hockey in Phoenix? Shane Doan is probably an essential part of any ownership group. Like Mario Lemieux did in Pittsburgh. Even with that, how many Arizona billionaires want to own an NHL team? Anyone celebrating this turn of events is naive about how difficult it's going to be to bring a new team to the desert. Phoenix is behind Atlanta and Houston for sure. And maybe even Quebec City. There's probably only 4 remaining slots in the NHL, for the foreseeable future. If a Portland or Kansas City, or some other city jumps the line, Phoenix may never get a team back. Unless a team relocates. So you better hope that Bettman, or his successor, are committed to hockey in the desert. Because I don't think the politicians are going to suddenly care. Hockey may just be done in Phoenix.

@@samuelfrick3475 fool the league did not say it in a public statement nor did the league think about it plus he signed a deal meaning contract with the league he can't take the money he sold the assets to Utah he would have to give ownership to the league sense he allegedly reneged from sources I don't believe shit until he makes a public statement and the league confirmed it like they did with Utah and that wasn't the entire truth when that story was told so let's wait until he and the league confirmed it
