If anybody’s curious, the difference between a fear and a phobia is how severely it impacts your life. So being scared of spiders and not wanting to be near them is one thing, but there are people who are so crippled by that fear that they won’t leave their house in case they see one. THAT is a phobia.

I used to think there's no such a thing as a phobia of spiders ( it's normal that we're all afraid of what could harm us) until I saw a video about an aracnophobic taking a look at spiders from video games, even though some times the spider isn't really detailed she would always look away even when she knows that spider isn't real. @@supershygirl1680 I think it’s a good idea to clarify the difference between “irrational”, “common”, and “normal”. Feeling uneasy or being somewhat stressed at tall heights is pretty common. I would argue it is a good thing to have some visceral response to, say, skydiving. That is normal, that is common. However, it becomes irrational (and a phobia) when your fear interferes with day-to-day happenings. From when I was 4, I developed a fear of heights. It didn’t seem too bad when I refused to climb tall playgrounds. However, when I had to attend a wedding in Maine (I live on the Gulf Coast of Mexico in the US), I was so scared of flying in an airplane, and my parents were well aware of how uneasy I would get from just climbing two flights of stairs (god forbid they rent an apartment on a floor higher than 6, or park at the top of a 4-story car garage) that my saint of a dad drove me from the latitude of northwest Florida, to like higher than New York. Three long days of driving with a nine year old that panics and pleads not to go over tall bridges. Just to get there. And that decision was made because otherwise I’d need a straight jacket just to board the plane, or attempt to run away before we even got there. Now, I’m proud to say it’s been 8-9 years, and even though I had also developed agoraphobia (fear of leaving home) and various other phobias, I have flown on a plane to visit family in NYC/NJ! I have made the round trip twice! I have boarded a plane 4 times and sat through the entire ride! (2 interchanges per round trip). This isn’t a sob story to qualify myself as some phobia expert; I just think putting phobias on the binary of “irrational” and “normal” is a very harmful thing to do. I think a more apt word to describe “normal” phobias would be “common”, that’s probably what you were trying to say? It’s true certain phobias are common, but there is no “normal” or “healthy” phobia. Phobias are caused when a fear becomes so powerful it may destroy an aspect of actually normal living. People with phobias actively avoid anything that may trigger them. My heart rate certainly increased while thinking about bridges and planes, and even if acrophobia might seem face-value a good idea (humans aren’t meant to fall great heights), it can be a truly debilitating illness.

Basically, if fear is rational, it is not a phobia. Phobias are only phobias if the fear is so intense to the point of it being irrational. Even if the fear has rational reasons. Phobias are meant to describe more than just fears. They’re a whole other thing; they’re irrational fears and straight up avoidances. Like, have-a-panic-attack-at-the-mention-of-the-word-fears. I’m guessing they use Greek words for these reasons. So they’re just a little bit more, I guess. But that’s my take on things. Don’t take me seriously. You prove a much better point.

GradeAUnderA, you don't have arachnophobia just because you have a fear of spiders, you have arachnophobia when you actively avoid places that could have spiders, or if you freak out when you see a spider web because there is a possibility that there is a spider in the room then. This is usually the part where I express my arachnophilia and my plans to genetically engineer a human-sized bird tarantula with breasts just to have sex wih it. Same with my phobia: I have emetophobia (fear of vomiting). Now, everybody hates vomiting, a-roight. Even boulimics, though they hate food more than vomiting. But I'm so scared of it that I don't eat out, eat small portions, and don't drink more than 2 pints per day. I don't just hate it, it's affecting my life style even when the realistic possibility of me vomiting is out of the question. I'm always hungry because if I eat enough to satisfy myself, I could feel bloathed, which could in worse case cause vomitting after some serious over-eating, but still I eat way too little just to not get the chance that I might feel that I might vomit. That's pretty damn irrational if you ask me, a-roight. tl;dr: Fear of spiders is rational and it's only a phobia if this rational fear impacts you to an irrational extend and spiders arouse me.
