Lyrics:
Somewhere in Germany but I can’t place it
Man I hate this part of Texas
Close my eyes, fantasize
Three clicks and I’m home
When I get back I’ll lay around
Then I’ll get up and lay back down
Romanticize a quiet life
There’s no place like my room
But you had to go
I know, I know, I know
Like a wave that crashed and melted on the shore
Not even the burnouts are out here anymore
And you had to go
I know, I know, I know
Out in the park we watch the sunset
Talking on a rusty swing set
After a while you went quiet
And I got mean
I’m always pushing you away from me
But you come back with gravity
And when I call you come home
A bird in your teeth
So I gotta go
I know, I know, I know
When the sirens sound you’ll hide under the floor
But I’m not gonna go down in my hometown in a tornado
I’m gonna chase it
I know, I know, I know
I gotta go now
I know, I know, I know
Driving out into the sun
Let the ultraviolet cover me up
Went looking for a creation myth
Ended up with a pair of cracked lips
Windows down scream along
To some America First rap country song
A slaughterhouse, an outlet mall
Slot machines, fear of God
Windows down, heater on
Big bolt of lighting hanging low
Over the coast everyone’s convinced
It’s a government drone or an alien spaceship
Either way we’re not alone
I’ll find a new place to be from
A haunted house with a picket fence
To float around and ghost my friends
I’m not afraid to disappear
The billboard said The End Is Near
I turned around there was nothing there
Yeah, I guess the end is here
The end is here

I found this song about a month after THAT event happened and it helped me cope so much over these past few months and it describes how I felt to a scarily accurate point (rough divorce between parents forced me to go to Texas with cousins for a few days) and obviously more than that but ye you're spot on with this description

I think taking and eating the apple from her younger self signifies Phoebe accepting her birth, her existence, and making out with her older self signifies the acceptance of her death, the ceasing of her existence. It's so clever - to begin with she finds it hard to come to terms with life and the monotony of it (signified by the many sets of the same dripping clothes, implying she does the same ritualistic washing behaviour every day) and by the end she doesn't want to let go of life, to such an extent that she is literally running from death. She has to come to terms with the end of this life that she once found so hard to accept that she has. Life is weird. You don't ask to be born and you don't ask to die, but you can't do anything to prevent it. To me, this video is about just that.

This is something slightly related to your observation but I think its interesting nonetheless--the person who is driving Phoebe towards the end of the video appears to be a younger version of herself, when she had shorter, blonde hair. @@Jayne585 I'm not limiting it to Gen Z, it's just that it's clearer now more than ever that the planet is going downhill fast in quite a few ways, and Gen Z seem to be the ones most concerned and worried cuz it's their world that they'll have to grow up in. I think the levels of existential dread have increased with each generation, and we're at a peak right now with Gen Z. I'm not saying that everyone else hasn't experienced existential depression.
@Jayne585

George Linford very true. i assumed wrong from your comment, sorry. I see too many people harping on gen z in particular for having these kinds of existential questions, as if these existential questions aren't present in other demographics. But yes, it is true with the younger generation, the reasons for their existential dread should be a little easier to understand with the state of the planet. I think in the last 50 years, it absolutely is more concentrated in the younger generation.

Musically they aren’t bad but this is just a dumb song. yesterday, there was a thunderstorm. it seemed as though my life stopped for this moment. i played this song again and again, for two hours, as i sat on my balcony. i watched the lightning and rain in a trance. it felt as though the world really was ending. looking back, it's one of the most beautiful things i've ever experienced. and i'm thankful phoebe made this song, so it could keep me company on that night. her music is truly once-in-a-lifetime.

To me this felt like coming to terms with the fact that life and time never stop, at the beginning it seems like she is portraying letting go of being a child and forcing herself to “leave” because that is where her life is at. She also wears her “skeletons” in her closet to embrace that because life and time keep going eventually her death will come to and although that concept brings anxiety it’s inevitable so she will simply live as her true self.

This song (and especially the ending with the screams) reminds me of my first experience of insomnia. I was around eleven at that time and asked myself a lot of questions about death, about my own existence. About what I would become when it would all end. I spent nights terrified, locked into anxious thoughts of not existing anymore. It was so brutal I couldn't sleep for days. Then it somehow... passed. Because I try not to spiral into it again. But the ending of this song reminds me of that silent yet deafening fear.

LOOK I HAVE BEEN WHERE YOU ARE WITH EXISTENTIAL DREAD BUT I KNOW THE THING THAT CAN CURE IT THE TRUTH AND THE ONE WHO IDENTIFIED HIMSELF AS THE TRUTH => THE EARTH IS FLAT = 100% THE BIBLE IS REAL = 100% GOD IS LITERALLY ABOVE YOUR HEAD = 0% REASON TO HAVE ANXIOUTY OR EXISTENTIAL DREAD ANYMORE.

LYRICS: Somewhere in Germany but I can't place it Man, I hate this part of Texas Close my eyes, fantasize Three clicks and I'm home When I get back I'll lay around And I'll get up and lay back down Romanticize the quiet life There's no place like my room But you had to go I know, I know, I know Like a wave that crashed and melted on the shore Not even the burnouts are out here anymore And you had to go I know, I know, I know Out in the park we watch the sunset Talking on a rusty swing set After a while you went quiet and I got mean Always pushing you away from me But you come back with gravity And when I call you come home A bird in your teeth So I gotta go I know, I know, I know When the sirens sound you'll hide under the floor But I'm not gonna go down with my hometown in a tornado I'm gonna chase it I know, I know, I know I gotta go now I know, I know, I know Driving out into the sun Let the ultraviolet cover me up Went looking for a creation myth Ended up with a pair of cracked lips Windows down, scream along To some America first rap country song A slaughterhouse, an outlet mall Slot machines, fear of God Windows down, heater on Big bolts of lightning hanging low Over the coast, everyone's convinced It's a government drone or alien spaceship Either way, we're not alone I'll find a new place to be from A haunted house with a picket fence To float around and ghost my friends No, I'm not afraid to disappear The billboard said the end is near I turned around, there was nothing there Yeah, I guess the end is here

Eh, it's pretty direct and derivative, how many times can we contrive death into a song before it isn't though. There's much more contemplative, timeless, and interminable pieces put out that speak much more volumes about the subject matter. Try the Hand that Rocks the Cradle, Come up and Get Me, or You Want it Darker. By The Smiths, Death Grips, and Leonard Cohen respectively. Macabre depictions in lyrical form, with undertones of sexuality, perversion, and others littered and subjectivity abundant.

The definitive apocalyptic anthem for the world we are living in. Each verse ratcheting the tension until the song explodes into a guitarmaggedon of joyous destruction. As we all sit in our “haunted houses with picket fences” watching the world go crazy, it is easy to believe that the end is not near, but here. As an Aussie, I also like the final nod to Robert Forster in the Go-Betweens' Was There Anything I Could Do? Oh, and yeah finally - skeleton onesies rule!

I remember having a conversation with my Dad about how my life didn’t seem like it was going anywhere, I said that the “I’m not gonna go down with my home town in a tornado, I’m gonna chase it” line was a perfect metaphor for how I felt. I didn’t want to stay in the same place well visions of an unpredictable future destroyed me, I wanted to face the future head on and move into a different place. Fast forward to today and I’m in the process of moving out and going to a new college for Music Production. I really love this song, it perfectly captures how I feel about my future sometimes

I see all of you talking about how this video talks about accepting death as in life but I see it more of death of a carreer. How, in the end, when she keeps doing the same (all the clothes are identical), she is doing it because she loves it and will love it forever (her older self is the only one dancing in the end), even if people doesn't like it (the stadium is empty and the only people at the concert are standing still)

As a whole the song seems to be about coming to terms with your own death. But the skeleton pjs stood out to me. I'm the video there was a huge closet full of the skeleton pjs. Is that a reference to the saying skeletons in the closet? If so maybe it's supposed to mean when your growning old it's not worth it to keep your secrets hidden. She literally wears them and at the end it was symbolizing the sweet kiss of death. The old lady is also her. Idk I just had a thought and wanted to share. Comment your ideas.

The young girl who rolls the apple is a younger version of Phoebe. When she bites the apple, you can hear birds chirping which serves as an awakening “truce” with the impending fate of death. Both the video and the song pick up tempo at this point and the increased chaos symbolizes the array of emotions that death inevitably confronts us with

Yes! From accepting the apple from her younger self (unsure if the apple is an allusion to genesis and sin or not, essentially aging out of childhood innocence) to a moment of panic running from death...to walking straight up and confronting her older, dead self (and her fate). This is an incredible.

My grandma passed away about a month ago, and for the first time in my life, I've been reminded that nothing is permanent and nothing will last forever. The sooner we realize "the end is near," the sooner we can stop taking our lives for granted.

this song makes me feel like I'm gonna burst from all the emotion it creates inside of me. the transition from sadness to rebellion to apathy/adaptation/acceptance/relief to the change of mind about the acceptance is amazing. the instrumentals perfectly underline it. I would've never thought that a song that seems so repetitive in its melodies could tell such a captivating story about coming to terms with the world ending. When i first listened to this, the last part caught me completely off guard. I believed that it would end in peace and acceptance, and suddenly the screaming began. It gave me chills. This is one of the songs that will always make me cry when I listen to them.

there are so many clever lines in here that you almost can’t deconstruct it, every line creates a different image, it’s a dissection as much as it is a statement. pheobe seems like she’s taking herself and her world apart and then describing whatever’s left
