I think a lot of the disappointment with Phoenix comes from scanning. I love the results I got from DSLR scanning + NLP conversion. The dynamic range is a bit lower than Kodak/Fuji emulsions and the color rendering definitely has character, but it creates a stunning and unique film look.

As someone who shot on phoenix and actually won a contest in the czech republic, I can absolutely say i love this film. Absolutely love the halo effect it has with light and in portraits it's just amazing. Now it's not perfect and it kinda does depend on the film you get because from my expirience the contrast can varie from batch to batch. It's a very specific film that can do a lot but not everything. I only shot the 35mm version so far but have mine 120 prepared to go one day.

Been shooting both formats exclusively since launch aside from a few indoor or night projects. Very pleased with everything and Harman are amazing and listening. They even reposted a photo of mine which I never thought would happen in a million years. To say Phoenix has changed everything about how I shoot and how I look at all of this would be an understatement.

I have been telling this to people since it came out. I know some scanners ruin it in default settings but with my camera scanning and Negative Lab Pro they look awesome. Shoot it in low contrast scenes in the shade where there’s good reflected light and it looks so dreamy. Add some plants that come out with a bit of a blue in the green and it’s killer. I wish more people knew what this stock is capable of.

You did a great job with this film stock! This makes me actually want to buy a roll!!

This is probably the most positive review I’ve seen. Bought a roll recently in 35mm

I think It's mainly because format 120) In 35 it's more ""tricky"

Is there any good reason to shoot Portra on 120 anymore with Gold being half the price and 95% as good?

Phoenix in 120 is awesome 🔥

We go back & forth in the lab nearly everyday regarding Phoenix in 35 - half of us prefer the Noritsu look, others like the Frontier. We're seeing MUCH better results with 120 Phoenix on the Noritsu tho. Love these shots brother, @3:14 is wild

Seems like they updated the emulsion somewhat between the first batch and the 120 release.

I have yet to schoot this film. But it is the orange cast that caught my eye and the reason I want to schoot it.

Honestly I got a few free rolls from Harman and I enjoyed using it other than the fact its really grainy and some bizarre colour shifts.

I’ve been seeing lots of 120 phoenix lately and I’m dying to try it

Did you ever shoot it at an ISO lower than 200? I've heard many people say it performs better which lines up with how you said it prefers being over exposed.
@jeremymote23819 күн бұрын
phoenix in 35 is low latitude and grainy, the color can be polarizing but when scanned right (and "overexposed") can be solid. 120 solves the grainy problem with more resolution for a given composition. so you end up with a c-41 chemistry that feels like e-6 slide films - an interesting result that can be fun to shoot. just don't try and resolve similarly to other stocks also shot on 120.

Reduce the grain and increase the dynamic range, and it's a pretty solid stock, even with the crazy colors.

What's the fascination of shooting with off brands that are really Kodak,Ilford or Fuji in disguise. There's no cost saving or quality factor with any of them
@metalfingersfilm14 күн бұрын
any many countries its cheaper to buy a respooled film than a kodak film.

I did not like the 35mm Phoenix. I only really like 3-4 photos from the whole roll. Most came out too dark and really orange.

Of course, you're in the Czech Republic... I don't see any advantage in the U.S. shooting it

Can I push Phoenix to 400?
@czelendzerii398517 күн бұрын
Dont even think of that, the contrast and grain would be awful. Shoot at 100 or 125 iso
