Drum Notation done with Groove Scribe: gscribe.com/share/akHSv4UBa6t... (Note that Groove Scribe cuts off the last bar, it's not meant for notating long sections like this. Still an awesome tool.)
This is an incredible drum intro on the song "Lasso" from the Phoenix album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, Thomas Hedlund on drums. Can you say hemiola? We'll break it down in the video:)
I know it can be frustrating to hear drummers make things sound easy in videos, and to go back to your own kit and not understand why you sound so bad. So when there are certain hand motions and techniques that I feel might be an issue for you (because they were an issue for me), I point out the modules in my Better Hands (bit.ly/2tu1WG6) and Better Feet (bit.ly/2TwjIIx) courses that will help you out.
I don't spend any time going over drum notation, though I believe that it's super important and I have an entire two-part lesson I recommend you check out if you're new to drum notation or want a refresher: bit.ly/2VHFipQ

I'm not a musician, I always loved this intro so i looked at covers and almost no one includes those high hat hits which is one of my favorite parts. really well done

What is your mic set up? I see one condenser mic underneath the ride and any overheads?
@tempoleaguedrums
@tempoleaguedrums 3 жыл бұрын
In this video, there is just the one condenser under the ride. But I've started using two condensers (both Rode NT1-As), one under the ride like you pointed out, and another under the rack tom. I'm experimenting with different placements to avoid phase issues. I've also started using an SM-57 to mic the top side of the snare. You can see an example of this in my Death Cab for Cutie - Summer Skin Short Groove (kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooa1oqh5n7iNd7s) I don't use any overheads because I want to be able to record quickly, and leaving the condensers set up in the positions I currently have them in makes the most sense in my small room. When I do overheads, I've always been a fan of recorderman. Works best in the small, very not optimized home studio spaces I generally find myself playing in :)

I've always heard it talked about as a hemiola, which this article describes as a specific type of polyrhythm: www.electronicdrumadvisor.com/polyrhythms-syncopation-hemiola/. Something I'd love to study more.
