It's not just that...Thora Hird also performed a couple of playwright Alan Bennett's dramatic monologues filmed for TV in a series called 'Talking Heads'. Various actresses have done episodes Julie Walters, Maggie Smith, Patricia Routledge etc...and Thora Hird. One of the most well known ones was an episode that won Thora Hird a BAFTA award for Best Actress called 'A Cream Cracker under the Settee' where she played the part of a lonely elderly woman that had suffered a fall and was trapped in her house unable to get help. Unable to get up from her fall, she recounts moments of her life and experiences, moments of humour mixed with sadness, she talks about issues such as treatment of the aged, growing old and life choices and memories etc. Eventually a policeman comes to the door but she can't reach it and tells the policeman she's just 'napping' with which the police, not knowing her actual condition, leave...and the implication, with her situation and it being an Alan Bennett play, and therefore typically bleak, at the end is that she then dies and passes away. It's all very typically Alan Bennett...and brilliantly acted by Hird. That's what Kay is referencing there when he's stuck on the stairlift alone.
