Prior to a 2016 revision to Japanese trial law, defendants were allowed to confess in exchange for lighter sentencing (which is probably what Lana is referencing), but their confessions could not be used as evidence against co-conspirators. However, the law did allow confessions to be used for search warrants to find evidence against the defendant in question, allowing them to build timelines and corroborate their stories, and if the evidence gathered coincidentally proved the guilt of another, that evidence could be used against the other (which is probably what the police were hoping would happen). That being said, Rise From The Ashes and Apollo Justice as a whole were meant to more closely resemble a Western courtroom to test the responses of Western audiences. This is why Maya is absent and was replaced by Ema and Trucy, Phoenix is calling witnesses, much of the AJ cast have strikingly more Anglo faces and less regional clothing, the Kitaki family having more cartoonishly Asian features and clothing, and Machi was allowed to testify against Daryan. As such, that element of Japanese trial law may have simply been ignored for these cases.

@@Mycroft616 It's also that this case is more technical-legal than the other cases, therefore some concepts appear which simply weren't considered in the other, more deduction oriented cases.
