1. Aspirate (Breathy) phonation- A breathy sound is created because breath is not moving fast enough to fully close the vocal folds.
2. Pressed phonation- Higher sub-glottal pressure creates a more muscular sound.
3. Free-flow phonation- This is the desired classical sound where breath moves quickly through the vocal folds through engaged abdominal movement causing repeated abduction and adduction of the vocal folds (Bernouli Effect).
Exercises:
1. Inhale and state: "Hello my name is ......" in a speak-sing voice.
2. Inhale deeply and speak-sing "Hey," while the abdominal muscles quickly move inward.
3. Staccato "hey" on different pitches or in a scale.
4. Legato scales on a vowel sound.
