*The story behind Project Ara* With Project Ara, ***** wants to create a hardware experience that allows people to choose exactly what they want their phone to look and and exactly what they want their phones to do. This phone experience and hardware customization is the future of mobile phones. We'll find out more in a few months during the very first alpha release and first developers conference. Exciting.

This is very promising. Why should you replace your phone if a part breaks or becomes old/obsolete, when you can just replace that single part and keep your information instead of having to copy it across etc. I also like the idea that I can keep my phone, but upgrade it occasionally like I would a PC. New CPU comes out? Don't need to get a whole new phone, just pull out the old one and place in the new one (also useful for hardware modding since the parts, when they inevitably break, can be replaced with ease). Screen breaks? Slide the parts off and build it around the new one. Definitely going to keep tabs on ARA.

You can do it. This concept looks feasible now. After all a smartphone is just a really small portable computer. Why can't it be modular like big brother the desktop. Image your next cellphone powered by the latest Intel/AMD CPU, with a Nvidia or AMD graphics unit. When your phone gets slow and outdated just buy a new CPU, GPU, etc. Keep up the good work, make it happen.

Very Excited for Project ARA. This is a great first step for the Phone Bloks Company. Are you guys looking to merge with Google or is this staying as two separate companies?
@siriusblack999910 жыл бұрын
my main question is, is project ARA the implementation of phonebloks or more like a competitor of phonebloks, because i liked the original idea of phonebloks quite a bit better, since the modules on that didn't waste nearly as much space as the ARA modules/base do, the phonebloks modules are also far less size-limited, IE you don't have to have "exactly two 2*2, exactly four 1*2, exactly and two 1*1 modules" in order for your phone to be complete, instead you have modules in all shapes and sizes ranging from 1*1 to 5*4(from what i can see) and you can easily make 1*1 'dummy' modules with absolutely no hardware to fill in the remaining space, and putting a dummy module into a 60-slot modular phone would feel like much less of a waste than putting one in an 8-slot modular phone EDIT: judging from the comments, it seems like they're competition/cooperation, but i'll leave it here just for verification. in either case, modular phones will be an awesome thing, if they end up functioning well
@nickfury12799 жыл бұрын
+Sirius Black Google is actually partnered with the creators of the Phonebloks idea. Phonebloks was just a concept, they didn't actually make a device. Project Ara is the implementation of the Phonebloks concept into an actual working device. However, there are other companies besides Google working on their own modular smartphone designs as well

They pushed back the release date to sometime in 2016. 2016 can't come fast enough. I've had my Droid RAZR M for almost 3 years, my battery's all crappy now, and I just got a text from Verizon saying I'm eligible for an upgrade. I'm holding out for this phone, because their most recent prototype actually works really well, judging from the conference video. The reason for the release date being pushed back is not because it failed the drop test. It actually didn't. That was revealed to be a joke. Apparently they found a better way to keep the modules attached to the endoskeleton than the electro-permanent magnets that the phone currently has. So they're redesigning it.

So Phonebloks - Project Ara - Motorola - Google.....are the people who came up this concept back at the beginning as Phonebloks still involved, because I've thought this was a great idea since back in the beginning but don't know how to feel about it now being Google, I mean I understand it's a good for development, but would hate to think the idea has just being sold on to a corporation.

If this happens google and other companies that are likely to support phonebloks will have to agree on one kind of specific chip inputs. This will force companies into collaborating with their enemies I/E Apple, God help us. If not we will have to stick with one company which means that we won't have as much availability. On the other hand desktopbloks could work... Except for Apple. P/s: yes, I know you can already build your own pcs but how many people know how to do that. If we just made it simple life would be so much easier.
@nickfury12799 жыл бұрын
+euan mendoza It's likely Apple won't get in on this. Or if they do, they'll just make their own version and sell it for much more money per unit. Still, it would be pretty cool to have modules that contain different mobile OS's, so you can switch between Android, Windows, iOS, Blackberry 10, etc. It would be a great thing for app developers. Plus it would make the phone truly modular. Anyway, there are quite a few companies now who want to develop modules for this phone. And if this is a success (which it probably will be, since Google's prototype actually functions now) , it's very likely we will also see this concept applied to desktop computers and laptops
