@@hemarookworstgiveaway7998 The only problem as i can see with the fairphone is that you cannot upgrade the processor. that is gonna become a big problem as most processors have a problem keeping up after around three years especially if they are lower end.If they make upgradeable(newer and better) processor and other modules then it can theoretically last forever while also staying updated.

Too bad Google took this idea, then ruined it. They started with something totally modular, then did some "market research", and decided that they would integrate all the core components into the device, and leave modularity for accessories only, which ruins the entire point of the modular phone.

+Nikolaj Lepka Supposedly the project research and patents for modular phones were being acquired by Google/Motorola in 2011-2012. Work started sometime in March/April in 2013, and Dave Hakkens independently announced Phonebloks in September of that same year. About a month later, Motorola publicly announced Project Ara and a collaboration with Phonebloks.

This reminds me of a folk story in Sri Lanka. There was a farmer who had an axe he says belonged to his great - great - great grandfather, but it looked quite new. When asked for why it looks very new, the farmer says I have replaced the blade three moons ago, and the handle last year. And this peg, it was the same when I received it from my father - he said.. That's modular design. We Really Need this on mobile devices..

This really makes a lot of sense. I have an iPhone 3gs and only would like to upgrade my phone for a better screen and battery. The rest of the phone is great and the battery and the screen are okay. But when I would finally upgrade phones a nearly perfect iPhone 3gs would just be thrown away and rot.
@osimmac
@osimmac 10 жыл бұрын
You see though, if you were to upgrade your screen, you would definitely need to upgrade your processor too, this is because with a bigger and better screen, it will have a higher resolution. There are some flaws to this, but its still awesome.

Why are so many comments upset that this *wildly unrealistic and unpractical idea* didn't come thru? Each one of those modules would need an incredible amount of R&D to make happen. Right now the Bluetooth module in your phone cost them like 5¢ to integrate, whereas a modular one would need to be like $20, and that's for *every component.* NFC, gyroscope, accelerometer, and more. You may say you don't need them but why would you pay *more* to *not have them?* Also the "base" would be a nearly impossible thing to design. Besides polling all the slots to determine what's in them, it needs to be a middle-man so they can communicate between each other just as fast as if they were connected directly like they are in a normal phone. This is such an advanced task that it would need a very powerful processor to handle it, in *addition* to the powerful processor you would need for your regular phone. This device wouldn't just be a nightmare to create, it would cost tens of thousands to the actual user to even begin to match other peoples' regular phones.

You don't need new one smartphone, just buy an older smartphone as iPhone 4 or any other and fix it with fixit website. I do it since the beginning of smart life (crazy you say ?) and i enjoy. I spend less than hundred for phone still really good and if you wan't upgrade (software only you right and i think it's greatest thing with the project on the top) use whiitedoor or just some tweak.

It really depends who you are. For a tech "savvy" guy like me, I need something fast and powerful, with basically good everything (I own a OnePlus 3 and it's the best smartphone IMO). If you're an app developer or something of that sort you need new. But, for anyone who just needs a phone that just does the basics then that's a decent strategy.

I'm so happy Motorola is actually teaming up with this guy for project Ara. When they stated they've been "developing this idea," for over a year I thought they were going to try to pass that off as a way to avoid giving this guy any money. Anyway, congratulations Dave on the new prototype with Motorola. This actually might become a thing!

This is quite an excellent idea, but how will the electronic nodes travel through a thin circuit motherboard? Where are the cooling systems, because my theory, if this works: then the phone will be at least 4" thick. Like I said, good idea, but sorry- not going to happen in the next 10 years.

Sir, brilliant concept, however... I had the same for cars too. The BEST components from each manufacturer and you as an individual could customize it. A streamlined, assembly line, car that was efficient for everyone, but individualized as well. Could your idea work... Surely. Will it? Only if they can make a profit on it sadly enough. Make you a deal, if the evolution revolution comes and I find myself as the leader of it, I will appoint you head of the science board to implement great ideas like this.

Nobody needs such a thing. Today's consumer wants a nice slim lightweight device with round edges; to change it frequently - the entire device and not its parts; to not be stuck with one device few years and upgrade its modules instead of following the new fashion and to buy some new device of some other brand... This concept maybe is suitable for consumers' behavior before 10 years, not today.

You're just throwing away a component instead of a whole phone. Everytime your battery dies on an iphone, you throw the whole thing away. For this its only the battery
@CmKrokala
@CmKrokala 10 жыл бұрын
Pie Town Why the hell would you throw your phone away when the battery dies? Just buy a new battery, jesus. Pretty much everytime your phone breaks in a way, it can be repaired for cheaper than buying a new phone.
@ToninFightsEntropy
@ToninFightsEntropy 10 жыл бұрын
Christian Korkala Because Apple design their products to be deliberately irreparable in that respect, or atleast really expensive to repair. I haven't been dumb enough to buy one, but I'm pretty sure you can't take the battery out of an iPhone without breaking it. That's Capitalism for you.. and why, sadly, Phonebloks probably won't take off. Sustainability is not good for the 'economy' in a competitive trade system.

+MasterMarcin omg can you turn your brain on? -efficiency (iphone is designed to work perfect every part is costum made) this thing whatever nothing is efficent you would like need more than 10 more parts you don't need with normal phone (like main board to fix in stuff, magnets, contacts, buses... -battery(iphone is designed to use battery to the best potential) this thing whatever is nothing like normal phone it would need 50% more power just to keep communications between chips going... communication between modules going coordinating everything... -upgrades(iphone is designed to be perfectly upgradable. you use it for few years than you sell it and buy new iphone 1 day of work. ) this thing whatever is not upgradable at all... if you want to upgrade entire phone you have to buy all the modules again every module new purchase and not to mention base would get outdated... then you would have to buy new base for latest modules... and old ones would become useless... -bulk (iphone is designed to be perfectly thin) this thing whatever would be FAT AS FUCK... the base itself would need to be at least 2mm thick... -PRICE let's not even start here... a single module could cost more than 50 bucks while you can get entire android phones for 50 bucks... today -RECYCLING (iphones are made to be perfectly recycable.. look it up type "liam apple" on youtube.. every iphone is the same so apple can make machines to recycle it... i don't see how you could recycle this thing...

lol are you? tell me one reason where this phone would be even remotely as good as my waterproof s7? :) go lol it has super fast charging battery that is efficient and doesn't use half of the energy to communicate between blocks, nice camera, 4xHD screen... and so on and so on OH! AND when the day comes I will just buy new phone and sell this one :) I won't have to sell like 20 blocks and buy all of the blocks again... that would take too much time... not to mention you would have problems with stuff working together lol.... ALSO idk how would warranty work... if I drop my s7 under the truck I just replace it because it has insurance LOL
