Wow! Phosh and most of libhandy apps used to be barely usable, but when given enough memory everything works nice and smooth. This gives me hope that with some more optimizations and newer hardware, the world of Linux phones wouldn't be a laggy mess.

Pinephone Pro + Keyboard would be a really cool Linux to go setup with some power behind it. I've ordered a PineTime which will probably arrive within next week! I am having PostmarketOS CE of the OG Pinephone. It's a really cool device to get into the world of Linux. I hope the desktop mode will be way more smoother with the PPP. :) Would be a dream to code for the PP from a PP. Thanks for all the work you're doing Martijn, just lovely how much progress you did with the camera back then.

Is it possible to run waydroid on this device? My ideal setup would be to have LineageOS (or any lightweight android ROM) in a container on the phone and KDE or Sway as the desktop when you connect the phone to an external monitor, all running on top of Arch. However, I have next to zero experience with porting and have never really messed around with ARM64 architecture, so I would like to know how messy of a project it's going to be.

It is possible, I have not tried it yet
@bepis26793 жыл бұрын
That's basically the same setup I want lol. I already use Sway on the desktop, so it would be pretty cool to have it on my phone
@preflex35023 жыл бұрын
It's not messy at all. The simplest way to set that up would be to install the Danct12's Arch-ARM "barebone" image, and then install a DM whatever DEs you want. It's all in the repos. You can, of course, start with generic ALARM, add Danct12's repos (or grab his PKGBUILDs) for hardware support and set up the bootloader yourself, the Arch way. But starting with the "barebone" image will save you some time and hassle.

It seems to work, firefox feels a bit smoother. The Web icon is hidden my default in postmarketOS because that rendering engine is pretty unstable on musl for some reason.

I am most interested in the Pinephone for the keyboard case, when is such likely to be available for purchase?
@preflex35023 жыл бұрын
The last official statement from Pine64 on Oct 15, was: "All I know is that the keyboard has finally entered production. I’ll take the next week or so to catch up on everything and write a concise follow-up blog post that will hopefully answer all your questions. I’ll also make sure to query developers about any major developments that have taken place in the past month. Keep an eye out for the post around October 30th." So, it seems likely that we'll get some news about that in a few days. If Martijn happens to know more, he's probably not allowed to talk about it.

Hey man i hope you read this i want to know if Librem 5 would go against (VS) pinephone pro which one would win in useablity and overall performance? Thx for response in advance
@killertigergaming67622 жыл бұрын
Pinephone pro would win by a long shot it isn't a competition its like comparing a 2018 samsung vs a 2021 iphone and asking which one is faster. There both from completely different years if your going to compare wait until librem releases a new phone so its fair

why all applications are testing without just camera app. Why hardware acceleration not working. ?
@preflex35023 жыл бұрын
Regarding the camera, I assume the reason Martijn isn't showing you is because he doesn't have it working yet. This stuff takes time. If you have an RK3399 with the same Sony camera, I'm sure Martijn would be happy to accept your patches to Megapixels if you can get it working on your own. He's just one guy, and he works really hard. What do you mean about "hardware acceleration"? For graphics, Phosh doesn't do much HW accel, as it's based on GTK3. Performance will improve when Phosh migrates to GTK4. If you're talking about HW video encoding for camera stuff, the hardware is not well documented, and support will take time, since it needs to be reverse-engineered. Even the original Pinephone _barely_ has decoding working (Cedar is a nightmare!). Thankfully, the faster SoC should be able to handle CPU encoding much better than the original PP.
@softwarelivre23893 жыл бұрын
Remember that "hardware acceleration" is a bad term, as both the CPU and the GPU are pieces of hardware, and both are capable of running software. It is better to say "GPU acceleration" instead.

Abysmal, actually worse than the original Pinephone, at least for now. I'd expect to see some improvements by the time it launches, but don't hold your breath. However, it is easy to swap batteries.

@@preflex3502 I mean honestly if it’s 2-3 hours that’s more than enough imo just get 3 batteries and you’re good I feel like battery life is going to be the hardest thing for having Linux phones, I can’t wait for us to get a breakthrough in battery technology in the next decade or so
@preflex35023 жыл бұрын
@@fossforever512 I have yet to find any reliable aftermarket batteries for my Pinephone. They have all been garbage. This isn't just an issue for the PP, but is endemic in the general third-party phone battery market. The industry has been dominated by lying scumbags for decades. Instead, I carry a small power bank.

I've played with Phosh on my Pixel1 running Droidian. It blows the Pinephone out of the water. Everything is sikly-smooth. I expect the Pinephone Pro to offer similar performance, but with much better hardware support, as it doesn't rely on hybris and an ancient kernel (3.18). The EG25 modem (same as original PP) support is in pretty good shape these days. The Pinephone Pro looks very exciting indeed! The new SoC is a _massive_ improvement over the PP's wimpy Allwinner A64.
