So with you on this one. I really feel for people starting out desperately waiting for something to click! I say to people starting out, don't buy a camera buy a tablet and some good headphones, I find watching, reading, learning and then going out to practise works best for me. I get really fired up by learning what I want before I go out and shoot. Keep up the great work Mike another great video 👍🏻 On a side note I was in mudeford the other day and thought "have I been here before?" Unconsciously incompetent; consciously incompetent; consciously competent; unconsciously competent - the journey to becoming skilled at anything, and you have summed it up so well Mike. Like anything, theres a learning process to go through and there is not quick fix such as more expensive equipment when you are not yet competent. I've been getting more and more into photography for quite a few years, and I have to say that you, out of several photographers I've seen (both youtubers and other writers), are one of them that have taught me a lot of stuff, even more so than a lot of the other ones combined. I think that's mostly because of the way you explain things; you don't seem to write out your scripts (and if you do, congratulations, I couldn't tell), and you're not necessarily providing with a particular example on composition, but a more general one, providing guidelines rather than "look at this photo, now do something like it, with these settings and this gear", and I appreciate that a lot (the humour helps a lot as well).

I have been to many doctors in my lifetime to try and fix my epilepsy. Since I was ten my parents did things as much as flying me to a different state to see a doctor who practiced in a certain fashion. Finally ended up with one in my home city that stuck. However, for 16 years I have been around all sorts of professionals, students, scientists etc. Had my head sliced open four times and still drive people nuts with my curiosity:) Through "my" experience, the students or researchers that stuck out in the crowd were the ones asking fascinatingly, simple questions to excel in their field; by asking these extremely simple questions, they obtained extremely detailed answers, from me or my family or a doctor. It was always awesome to watch and listen to these young people learning by doing.....the same thing each day. So I would listen to everything possible until I yelped for another needle in my arm to kill unbelievable pain:) Whenever I had to say goodbye and move on, I looked at them, and they were tired, but I could see that they did this sort of thing every waking hour of the day, and as they tried to simplify answers for me, it showed. So yeah, drive a car, pick ones' nose, moving an eyeball; the most simple things your body does, learning to walk. It all comes down to building habits and practice. You are correct Mike Browne. It is all up top. Hence the reason cameras do not take pictures. One cannot do anything without using their brain. I strive to use mine as efficiently as possible every day:) btw: Cameras don't got no brains!!!

Nice advice there, Mike :) I suppose the nice thing about shooting buildings is that they can't get up and leg it. You can take your time with the composition and exposure and even wait for something more interesting to happen. That is important to realize and sets you apart from someone who just grabs a few shots and then leaves right away. It's where the art aspect in photography comes from. I think I said this before, but at the moment I really enjoy shooting animals. Because of that I often don't have the luxury of taking my time. I either take the shot at the right moment or the critter is gone or the crucial moment is over. However, this also taught me two very important things! First of all, it taught me how to be quick with my composition. But second of all, I realized that everything follows a certain order (not in the supernatural sense :P). Animals have certain spots and paths they prefer. So even if you missed your first chance you can take your time to compose and wait for a second chance. And this applies for other things, too. On the street people follow a certain rythm. Traffic lights bring order into the flow of cars and people, trains and subways come and go at their scheduled times. If you keep this in mind and look for these rythms that makes taking great shots a lot easier. Following this has allowed me to take some shots I am pretty damn happy with :) flic.kr/p/oyqRs7 flic.kr/p/wRp3nq

Hi Mike, I love the way you are able to bring your audience with you when you make these videos. It is both interesting and informative at the same time. We get to see how and why you do things and then we are able to mimic them until we develop our own techniques by repetition. Doing things over and over again is the key. I have been taking photos since the 35mm film days and I do see pictures out of the corner of my eye all the time. I thought I was just weird. Thanks for sharing this video. I would like to make a suggestion: most of us wish to take that fantastic photo each time we see photos of Cartier Bresson, Doisneau or any of the masters. Hi Mike Browne...i took a photo once, note once, and all the things you suggest happened in an instant and then some .....when i pressed the shutter the image almost left an impression burned on my retina....and that impression became a reality in the final shot.....it is important to build your photo skills for that magic moment and then you are prepared....remember .A.utomatic.mode ....(not aperture priority) is for when you don't have the skill or time for that,...however.A.utomatic should not be be dismissed by any photographer however good....I have now moved away from aperture priority..........M..is my normal mode now but sometimes i fuck the exposure up..... when you don't have the time.....but then P mode is all good as well and can achieve great results..and this is why some call it pussy mode.
@MikeBrowne9 жыл бұрын
Thankds for sharing your story David Walton Any mode works and even P mode can be controlled by using exposure locks etc. I mostly shoot A mode though I think it's important photographers know how to use Manual because the camera sometimes needs us to take control in order to get what we want - MIKE

Mike Browne Hey Mike, thanks for the reply and I will do just that!
@LehighValleyPhoto9 жыл бұрын
Tyler Bond Hi Tyler. It's tough to make a "bad" choice today. Cameras today are incredible machines regardless of the nameplate. I have taken thousands of bad images over the past 20+ years. Conversely, I've taken dozens of images I quite like in that time. None of those had anything to do with nameplate, mega-pixels, or any other white-paper statistic. One of the most endearing aspects of Mike's channel is that he concentrates more on the 12 inches behind the camera than the nameplate on the front of it. Either of the choices mentioned will provide outstanding results when you do your part. Good luck.
@MrTjbubler9 жыл бұрын
LehighValleyPhoto Yeah that makes sense! Thank you both for your replies, just wanted as much advice before I spend money on a camera and lenses! If i branch into Nikon i will most likely stay with Nikon because of the lenses, and vice versa (so just needed to be sure.) Thank you anyway! :)
@LehighValleyPhoto9 жыл бұрын
Tyler Bond No problem. I have shot, professionally, with both for 20+ years. Started with Nikon and moved to Canon for the silliest reason you could imagine...The eye-piece of the Canon 1D series protruded from the camera by about 1/2inch which made the camera more comfortable to shoot on longer sessions than the Nikon. Lenses from both companies are wonderful and both will offer more proprietary and third-party accessories than anyone else. The color palette of the two are a bit different, but neither is better/worse. Image quality of both are astounding. IMO, you can't make a mistake.

Awesome video! Do you have any tips for photo composition using a prime lens? I only have a 35 mm (~52.5 equivalent on my crop sensor camera) and often find it hard to get the right composition even though I do get it by moving around a lot. How can I learn to naturally look at my subject before even taking the camera out? I think that would help me in not losing a lot of great potential pictures!
@MikeBrowne9 жыл бұрын
hi +Joel Manatharayil thank you for the kind words, as Mike said, this takes time of getting used to, you have to know the basic of composition and light, you have to ask yourself " why are you taking this image" what's interesting about it, how the subject register in your brilliant brain, you must see first the result of the image in your brain just before you take the image. please check Mike's composition videos and you may start from there.www.photographycourses.biz/videos/creative/composition/composition-intro-pt-1 - MELISSA ( for Mike )

@MikeBrowne9 жыл бұрын
No problem +angela corrado in fact using a fixed length lens is great way to practise composition because you have to work harder to get what you want by moving yourself about. DSLR isn't necessarily better - it's just more flexible and gives you more choices if using a zoom. I know photographers who shoot DSLR with prime lenses which don't zoom. Hey Mike, another super video, thank you. Just wondering, are you moving fully to Fuji or a case of horse for course? If so, why?
@MikeBrowne8 жыл бұрын
hi Mike is not moving to FUJI full time, he loves using fuji when he travel, just like in this video, because it's more light weight, he loves using his nikon for more serious commercial work. - Melissa pp Mike

Great video Mike. I watched this a few months ago and learnt lots. Having learnt lots I look at this video again a few months down the line and now question the white balance on your stills. The sky just looks weird compared to the professional quality of the video. Was this intentional?

Thank you Photon Hunter though I still shoot with my D600 Nikon on some shoots because i can work faster with it when situations are changing fast. The fuji is great for travelling because it's so small and i can easily shoot additional video of what I'm doing for these types of video. - MIKE

Thank you for another fantastic video! Is the address at 10:22 correct for the disassociation video? Maybe I'm just typing it wrong, but I keep getting an error on the website. Had to do a site search to get to the long URL. www.photographycourses.biz/videos/creative/composition/composition-tips if anyone reading comments is wondering. Also a great video!

In another way, you are getting it wrong in the camera. If you are a person who typically prints their photos, you have to leave room on them long edge for cropping. This is something you should inform people about. I know you mention it on other videos but some may have missed it.

Ok, I actually quite like this guy. But this particular video is pure comedy. "Can you spot the picture? How did I manage to spot it??" Yeah... it takes a master photographer to spot a graphic church stonework against clear blue skies in an idyllic location...
