The backrooms is really a culmination of a lot of different horror tropes from over the years and it's absolutely wonderful in that it is a distillation of said concepts into a cohesive self contained universe.

For me, I liked it better when it really was just a empty space of a yellow room that feels endless due to the walls making it like a maze and being there alone for how long makes you think you are being follow but really it all in your head. Like fine, I guess having one monster is fine an all..but I thought it got disappointing when it became a scp clone down the line.

@@atomic747 i honestly agree, I feel like if anything the backrooms should lean into cosmic or Eldritch horror more and not show the monster or even have one, sometimes anxiety can be the worst monster of them all.

@@atomic747 I think the memetic facet of the backrooms as being a projection of spaces without context is the best part. It becomes a study on the function of space and how we interpret and interact with it. It invites you to see the spaces in modern society for the abstract absurdity they often are.

@@atomic747though I agree with your point, I think this one is different, the "monster" never really moves, sure it changes positions but it doesn't even harm you, the backrooms even in the early interpretations could change things, like create new walls and stuff, it seems to change more the more paranoid you are, in a certain way the backrooms feeds on it, why not put a strange but safe doll twice your size just to crank up the paranoia? ( I'm not a backroom expert so anything wrong, just correct me politely please )

You are absolutely correct about building positive habits to cope with negative feelings and other issues. Even if you have to start with drinking water daily, it's still a step towards self care that will help you in the long run. A lot of depressive moods can be influenced and trigger by poor routines (as someone suffering from BPD this is magnified if my schedule gets messed up) so I totally get what you mean man. As always, I love your tidbits at the start of each video, it is always somehow relevant to issues I'm having and it makes me feel like I am not alone.

Giving myself a chore everyday and having weekly chores has helped my depression a lot. I'm one of those people who lets the dishes and laundry pile up due to depression, but doing them as part of a routine has really helped me out. I feel like even if I felt like I didn't move forward that day, I managed to get something done, even if it's just washing the dishes.

Terrifying games paired with a calm, genuine commentary, and a kind person doing what he likes making those commentaries and not treating his veiwers like dogshit or money banks. these videos are fantastic and brighten my day tenfold when im down. props to you, Big G. Huge props. Also, the backrooms never ceases to be an absolute joy to read or play through, even if slightly overdone, with everything people make surrounding it. It wend from a little 4chan thread about a weird empty room to something people can add too and create for that has a linear path but next to no rules for how it operates and how people can develop on the concept.

First half biggaming keeps saying there's no real threats but I'm already terrified and stressed out 😭 the later half is even crazier, the train and the closed mall scared the hell outta me, and the false hope at the end was just brutal, oh man. It's not like games where you have enemies so at least you get some adrenalin, this game is just pure and silent dread. It's insane how realistic and huge this game is! Much respect to you for being able to carrying through, I could never play this game, omg

I think playing with the expectations of such a balance (interactivity, sight-seeing vs truly just representing the backrooms for what it is, empty space) is the most interesting part of this game. I think this game is way emptier than anyone suspects because you constantly have this meta expectation. "It's a game right? In the end it's still people that made it." And while I find sometimes I can read the lay-out of the game (overall flow in the way the rooms go subtly guiding you) I think they manage to avoid this on purpose a lot as well. Using conventional level-design techniques to lead you into purely nothingness over and over and over. The first two floors are the biggest masterpieces at this, and why most people spend most time on them and get truly turned around. It's a purposeful kind of nothing, a motionless complexity. At larger scale, it would begin to break apart our very desire to explore, which is laced with thrill-seeking in the end. I do imagine that as they get hit by the majority opinion, people that probably don't care for stumbling around empty halls for 3 hours, they'll increase the amount of happenings in the game over time, but part of me wishes they remain weirdly stubborn on the emptiness, maybe outpacing each new happening they add by another 15 minutes-walking worth of just space. The backrooms is fun to think about, not to be in. This contradiction in making entertaining games about the backrooms leads to the concept being distorted into a fun-house of events and puzzles in most games. It's good to have at least one that puts its foot down, even if only gently, on remaining emptier.

I have a theory regarding why you got turned around a couple times and ended up in a familiar place again. A common trope of the backrooms is that they're non-euclidean, meaning that you can go in a straight line but arrive back to where you started... so maybe it's the game's way of throwing off your sense of direction? Also, whenever you were crawling through those tight gaps after seeing the monster, I kept expecting for you to be suddenly unable to move, look behind you and find that the creature is right there grabbing your leg. Those crawl spaces were definitely missed opportunities in terms of jumpscares. Had a great time watching this, keep up the great content :)

I would have to respectfully disagree with you on some points BigGaming. This is literally everything I've ever wanted from backrooms media and it is so well done and completely amazing! This pure representation of the mystery and sheer liminality of the backrooms is what draws me into the concept personally. I can't get enough of that "just what the hell is this place? And where does it go?" feeling that this game encapsulates perfectly. I feel the drawn-out exploration approach allows for the building of the atmosphere and allows the game to explore some interesting and fitting liminal spaces, that, combined with the one entity we see showing up only twice in a non hostile manner really helps sell the dizzying "never getting the full picture" feeling which really mystifies me about concepts like the backrooms and SCP. I really like the walking simulator take and could see myself getting lost in an expanded version of this for hours out of sheer fascination, knowing literally anything could be around the next corner. The same mystique is what drew me into SCP initially as well. SCPs like 087, 354, and 432 capture the same feeling I feel this game does so well. Not to mention that graphics and animations are top-notch!
@biggaming64
@biggaming64 Жыл бұрын
Honestly this is a very good assessment of the game. I've been reflecting on this game since I finished it and I think I aligned more with what you said in the comment now. There really is nothing else like this...it's this COMPLETLEY open liminal space game where the entire experience is built around the atmosphere. Adding in more scenes with the creepy figure may have compromised that vision...

Motivation is tricky. I can force myself to do the necessary things to keep my job and maintain at least bare minimum at home. Creative motivation has been much harder these past few years. I churned out one novel after another for 15 years straight - really pushed as hard as I could to sell my books and get somewhere. Every story was like a romance or obsession. Then after my surgery the fire just fizzled out. Ideas were still there and I’m still capable of writing well but zero desire to see it through. I’ve had to make myself finish my last three and while I’m glad I got them published I’ve never felt the same spark I used to have. I may never again. Sometimes you just have to make yourself do things without that desire because you know the end result is worthwhile and yet I struggle to find satisfaction in any of it. And I know many say there should satisfaction just to have written something but what’s a story if no one reads it? It’s a hard thing, staying motivated.

Tall creatures with long arms and big mouths/no mouths freak me out so badly. So when you gasped when you rounded that corner and saw that pale figure halfway through this video, the hair on my arms stood up and the blood drained from my face at the same time. I couldn't scream either- I was way too petrified to do anything but stare in absolute fear. The lack of sound/music made it even scarier. I wanted to hold onto someone for comfort but I'm all alone 😭 You singing Christmas music somehow helped though? 🤣

I loved this playthrough! I know you worried whether we'd have fun watching it but please know that it was not only enjoyable, but relaxing and also unnerving. Even though there weren't a lot of scares, I liked the dread and the montony that the game provided. It's a special kind of purgatory to be trapped in repetitive architecture that provides almost nothing for you, wondering if you'll find the exit, or wander around until you perish of thirst/hunger/or something else entirely. The concept alone made me incredibly invested and enjoyable to watch, even if the gameplay was slow, so to speak! Hope you have a good day!

Love the focus on backroo games! The backrooms really represents my favorite type of horror, the horror that comes from space/environments. When the artificial structures that are supposed to represent safety and control show up in a completely chaotic and out of control kinda way, like unexplored nature, creates such a unique fear, so contemporary and so primitive at the same time. Going through these rooms also feels so much like living as a small gear in our expanding and confusing world. I like in this game there are random spaces that are similar to public spaces like store or music hall, reminds me of The Stanley Parable and SCP's Old IKEA, it's such a nice dread

This game became more and more disappointing towards the end, but at the same time, I've never felt so much dread in the initial part of the game. The creature was absolutely terrifying when it was first unveiled, and I was downright mortified when you tried to touch it, and possibly even more creeped out that it just stood there and did nothing, however this game really lost its touch when the first cutscene with the creature rolled up. Forcing a cutscene like that where the protagonist turned around and the monster was just standing there was actually really cheesy and threw off all the atmosphere I was feeling. Before that cutscene, I was crossing my fingers in front of my eyes each time you went into a dead end room or just some really anti-feng shui architecture popped up, and then the goofy cutscenes with the creature started popping up and all the fear I was building up kinda just disappeared for the rest of the video. As an avid lover of that horror chills/dreadful feeling (which is why I watch horror playthroughs), I was heavily disheartened by how cheap the rest of the scares were, although I did feel fairly freaked when we finally returned to the team and then it turned out to be a facsimile. Thanks for this playthrough, and for your kind words at the beginning, BigGaming64.

He missed a few parts of the game that you would consider a "scare" In the end the game's purpose was to make you be the one to scare yourself while playing, which in itself was also the original purpose of the backrooms just emptyness and you trapped in it. Also im pretty sure the developer made the walls and stuff and around the corner have things subtly pop up so you would second guesd yourself

I don’t really know how to describe the difference between one foreboding empty mall from the other, but there definitely is one. Either way, I have a lot of hope for both of them. I’m definitely interested in how they’re gonna implement co-op in this, and what that will mean game play wise

29:25 "Did they have washing machine like this in 1988?" The dedication to the background setting and details 😂 On the other hand, it would be interesting if it's intentional and hints the backrooms have a different timeline from the real world

Very intense liminal space feelings in this whole video I love it. I hope my dreams aren’t anything like this tonight after watching biggaming64 😂😅😅

Nice video, man! I can’t wait to see what other horror game that were inspired by creepy post made only ,which is how the back rooms started if I’m not mistaken. I’d personally like to see you explore the SCP games ,I can tell you from experience they are very well made! Some I could recommend are SCP Containment Breach and SCP Secret Files (There are probably more good ones but those are the ones I could think of right now, maybe check out SPC 5K as well)

in the backrooms apparently there is a level that is basically like that abandoned mall where the further you go the more distorted it gets.
