What are hostels?

hostels generally refer to cheap accommodation, kind of like a dormitory, where you can rent a bed/room for the night or however long. They are usually aimed towards backpackers/travelers and are prevalent in most big European cities. Most young people stay at hostels as opposed to hotels because it is sooo much cheaper and you can meet a lot of interesting people (usually backpackers as well).
