I went out yesterday and shot 400 images of the Vasbinder monument in our local cemetery. Ran them through RC which looked great but decided to do the open source method to compare. I followed along with no trouble at all. While the fans are running I had time to read quite a lot about Meshroom. This is a wonderful tutorial and I want to thank you for making it.

The way you do the model simplification using Instant Meshes (27:45+) for game assets was enlightening! But, even better was the baking of the normals and textures (30:20+). I feel I will get better results following your process. Thank you!

Amazing video! Hm, yeah getting that much photos can be tedious, but the ops in me 😂take a (or make a ) rotating wheel (there are pretty afordable ones esp. for smaller objects) and take a video, then export the frames as singular Photos might speed up the work (didnt tried it though just came to mind) .

Okay, saving this for reference in case I need to texture something in blender. Absolutely love the way they do it, too, compared to the last time I used Maya (admittedly, years ago). Also love the way you can generate proper low poly topology with just a couple of traces to tell it how to swirl.

I happen to have a license for Agisoft Metashape, back from when it was Photoscan and no OpenSource software available. I tried to photoscan the garden around my house. I never quite finished, just too big a project to get a decent result. the plan was to plan out the garden within blender but starting from a photoscan. oh well.

There is the OpenCL version of Meshroom that works without CUDA. However it takes the entire ethernity plus six months to make one project and some features are disabled. But it is a good alternative to those that want to try the method without buying a new computer.

How about shooting a high shutter rate video of the object, then export it as individual images, delete about 80 or 90 % of the images and then using that as a source for putting together the model? Worth trying?
@blanchsb

Great video. Just a comment. You set 8K on your texture but then you had down scale set to 2. That will drop it down to 4K FYI. If you change it to 1 you'll actually export the 8K texture map.

I love your work. I tried to do a few Photogrammetry experiments myself after watching your video but failed. In principle it works - I easily reproduced your Ammonite example. I assume the pictures I am taking are just really bad. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 9. In Pro Mode in your video, you only show that you set ISO to 200. What else do you set to which value? Main camera: 12 MP (OIS, PDAF) Specifications: Aperture size: F1.5/F2.4; Focal length: 26 mm; Sensor size: 1/2.55"; Pixel size: 1.4 μm Second camera: 12 MP (Telephoto, OIS, Autofocus) Specifications: Optical zoom: 2.0x; Aperture size: F2.4; Focal Length: 52 mm; Sensor size: 1/3.4"; Pixel size: 1 μm Which aperture, Which F-Value, Manual Focus or Autofocus? Etc.

I think that you're really missing some GPU compute there. In my laptop I have a Quadro T2000 with 4GB of VRAM and some of the steps don't take nearly as long as it does for you. With an i9 9880H, 32GB of RAM it takes way less time than that. Sure it's a great laptop, but it's still a laptop. As long as you have a CUDA capable GPU then some of the steps will go way faster.

Great in-depth tutorial. Thank-you!! Quick question. If I were to take photos of a sculpture in a park and there were a lot of trees around it, would it help to bring those photos into Photoshop and get rid of most of the background around it before I imported them into my photogrammetry software?

Just saw parts of your course (haven't finished yet). Unimportant question, but when you have the time. When marking the edges for the seam, would that be a chance to use the path select tools? choosing the points on opposite sides, and then Blender will configure the shortest route between them? I'd never heard of the path select tool (not sure if that's what you call it), but I'd never seen anyone using it in seam selection, and it seems appropriate.... Just a random thought. Love your videos as usual, such high quality.

This is a great step by step detailed tutorial, thank you! The one thing I have been searching for years is how to properly join two halves of a scan so I can have an entire scan and not cut the bottom off. I had a bit of success with Photoscan at the time but pricing was prohibitive so I'm looking for an open source way to do it. Photoscan would recognize the two halves and join them itself. Anything similar in the open source world?

Find it funny he kept talking about it making your pc a potato, maybe im blessed but my Ryzen 9 barely hit 50% during all of that with nearly 100 photos. Though I am lacking in gpu as I only have a 2060 super. But yeah if any of you have a ryzen 9 3200X or better you should be able to use the computer just fine while it works.
