Tyra LOVES to talk about how on the Tyra show she was body positive but here we see her body shaming that model that has a beautiful body. My blood is boiling. The hypocrisy.

@malaysiafreelon3232 4 жыл бұрын
Tyra most definitely was not shaming her. She said that it's all about choices and that she can't place the blame on anyone else. How is that shaming? Keenyah gained a considerable amount of weight (15-20 lbs) in a short period of time, which is completely unacceptable and unprofessional for a new model, or anyone in the entertainment industry for that matter. If she was in the real world and gained that much weight that quickly, her contract would be ripped to shreds before she could even think about an explanation. The judges were being realistic because even if the girl doesn't win, it is still good to have knowledge about the industry. Her body is beautiful no matter what, but the industry she wishes to be apart of simply will not accept her (as a SUPERMODEL) at that size. There is nothing that anyone, even Tyra Banks, could do to change that.
@LuciferMorningstar-qq4nv
@LuciferMorningstar-qq4nv 4 жыл бұрын
@@malaysiafreelon3232 then perhaps she shouldn’t have acted like she was changing it? That was the whole point. And the worse part is that Tyra’s show really could’ve made at least some changes, have some influence on the modeling world if she approached this show with that intention. But her intention was to make a hit reality TV with a lot of drama and advertising. Which is fine, she can do whatever she wants but it’s funny how she acted like she was this revolutionary model who will change the game.
@malaysiafreelon3232
@malaysiafreelon3232 4 жыл бұрын
@@LuciferMorningstar-qq4nv The thing is, Tyra was somewhat changing the industry or at least giving girls opportunities they wouldn't have received otherwise. Even at Keenyah's starting weight, which is the weight at which she was accepted into the show, she would've been told to lose weight in the real world. Believe it or not, Keenyah was ALREADY considered a little big for an average model, and Tyra was trying to change this by accepting size 4-6 girls (which is considered too big in the industry) onto the show. If anything, the show sacrificed the better model time and time again for a model who was a success story or different from the rest. Neither Whitney (cycle 10) nor Nyle (cycle 22) were the best out of their groups but the judges picked them because it would be better to have change in the industry. I could name plenty of other times where this has happened, too. The show was revolutionary and ahead of its time in terms of inclusivity and people will never accept that because the modelling industry itself is inherently destructive. You don't hate the show, nor do you just dislike Tyra. The show is simply a small reflection of what the modelling industry actually is.

@@malaysiafreelon3232 funny you should say that thought. I don’t like the show. And I have reasons for that: poor and many uninteresting photoshoots; drama for the sake of drama; I didn’t really get anything apart from the drama from this show where as I really hoped that since there are judges there would be more constructive criticism and interesting information to know just for fun. The show doesn’t stand the test of time and fails in so many ways. I don’t like Tyra either. I don’t hate her by any means, she literally has no impact on my life obviously since we never met, but I don’t like her just because she is too.. just too much I guess. She’s not the type of person you aspire to be despite acknowledging her accomplishments. Some of her catwalks are some of my favorites because she is so beautiful and knows what she’s doing but she’s not the person I’d choose as a role model or even as someone to look up to. A lot of problematic behavior, too much hypocrisy and pretense. So it’s not just the modeling. They chose those contestants because they wanted to appear progressive. That’s the thing. Appear. Not be. That’s my issue with this. They knew they weren’t as good as other models but they wanted to appear progressive.

Yeppp. I was a teenager when I started watching the show, like literally 13, and am 30 now. I spent a decade of my life hating my body, from 13 to about the same age you are now. I never saw any outside confirmation that tall, broad-shouldered, fat and muscular women can be attractive. And at that age, I didn't recognize the strength of my body. Just its bigness. And big was fat and fat was bad. I felt miserable when I was the fattest person in a group, and I later learned that I would misjudge and think I was bigger than I was. I would freak out on stairs when someone came up behind me because I was afraid they'd think I was fat and slow, then get winded trying to walk quicker without breathing audibly. And the disordered eating. That was a big thing for a long time. I don't know how it happened still, but one day it was like a switch flipped and I was able to see my body positively for the first time in my adult life. I think the rise of the body positivity movement definitely helped. Learning about anti-fat bias in medical research and practice. Listening to proud fat people who won't apologize for their bodies. Remaking the show from an actually body positive standpoint would be so cool to see.

My brain filled in the positives for Keenya that Jay gave others but denied her. Maybe my misunderstanding stems from my love of elephants traits, or maybe it was my wholesome naivety. No one said that Keenyah was fat. She gained a considerable amount of weight in a short time frame, which is incredibly unprofessional for a model. Models' measurements, weight, and height are front and center on every page in their portfolio so they MUST keep up with those numbers. If you knew anything about the fashion industry you would know this. ANTM was no more toxic than the modelling industry itself; the show just happened to give the world a glimpse into the experience of a top model, which turned most people away.

It’s not even just the trauma they caused a lot of these girls, it’s also about the effect these moments had on viewers. I was a young teen when this show aired. I was struggling with my body image and self confidence. This show literally INSPIRED me to seek out horrific “thinsporation” or “thinspo” online; I joined pro-ana groups and followed “pro-ana/mia” blogs because I wanted to be beautiful like the girls on the show, and a perfectly thin waif like the judges said they wanted. I’m not saying this show _caused_ my eating disorder because I was already carrying trauma and body image mental health issues, but it really did contribute in a major way to my actions that followed. I became obsessed with making collages from high fashion magazines like Vogue and Harper’s Bazzar, etc., to keep me focused on what I thought I wanted to be like. I just wonder how many other vulnerable young girls/women this show damaged outside of the contestants. It was toxic as hell, and I hope no one ever creates another show like it. I used to look up to Tyra SO much, but as I became a woman and mother, I realized (all too late) she was nothing more than a scammer who used her influence to create a show centered around herself, and she couldn’t have cared less about how it hurt those involved with it, from the models to the viewers. I just want to thank you for your comment, I was a teenager when this show first aired and was also already struggling with disordered behaviors and Tyra's claim that this was going to be a revolutionary show and change the modeling world I was actually excited to finally have a show to watch that I thought would help me be more body positive(not a phrase that existed back then)and instead it ended up sending me spiraling down an even darker rabbit hole that I ended up developing full blown anorexia on top of my already rampant bulimia. Because of this asinine show I discovered the same online communities of pro ana/mia that you did and I can honestly say it completely destroyed my life for far too long. I am now very much so involved in the true body positivity movement which became of the utmost importance to me when I became an aunt to 3 beautiful girls(and then eventually also my nephews too)I did not in any way want them to see what I was doing to myself and think they should do the same. Nope nope nope. Tyra is a liar and a hypocrite and all the judges are just as bad. It is sickening and I am shocked to learn that they brought this show back (although I believe it is now gone for good? Praise the gods!) I sincerely hope all of them are disgusted by their behavior on this show but I seriously doubt they give a sh*t. Anyhow, again, thank you.

Thank you for talking about this. I was a 17yr Bulimic, 4yrs in recovery. My lil sis is a 19yr anorexic, almost 2yrs in recovery. We both were heavily influenced in our family, childhood, and this show highlighted it as well. All of it caused a constant battle with ourselves and extremely toxic self talk. We both have daughters now and it pushed us both to get help, get healthy and work on healing ourselves, cuz we don't want our kids to struggle in the same ways. I hope your doing well hun and wish you the best.

I've been sitting here for the past 2 days binging your ANTM content. Its crazy watching this! This show came out when I was in middle school and I loved it!! Its how I taught myself to take selfies before it was a thing. Lol but, I never noticed how mean they are to these girls! How can I have missed this? Now watching as an adult I am shocked. 💔 I wonder how many things I've internalizes from watching this growing up and didn't notice it. 🤦🏾‍♀️ This is insane. As long as you make these videos, I'll keep watching! BTW, you are really pretty! You should be a model. Lol

I can't believe that they called that girl fat. I've a similar body and people have been calling me too thin my whole life. So you're telling me I'm too thin to be a regular human but too fat to be a model ? The industry is fucked up.

Yeah, this was the main moment that made everyone turn on Tyra because she's a huge hypocrite, at least Janice was just mean in everything so you expected it but Tyra tries to play both sides. That model looked gorgeous, she was already thin, we should never be having this convo like having any fat at all is unacceptable. It was really bad.

I remember this when I was growing up. She wasn't even overweight! It's not ever okay to say it regardless of someone's weight; but her body was fine. Sometimes I feel like the judges would say things like that out of jealousy. I remember them calling another poc on the show "selfish" and "entitled" because she refused to wear something that she felt was disrespectful to her culture. This show was a joke, I'm glad it was cancelled.

Right. What about plus size models? So is Tyra's logic that if you're not plus size you have to be SKINNY??? Why can't she carry just a little more weight than anorexic? Natural is beautiful!!!
@catgatherer7423
@catgatherer7423 2 жыл бұрын
@@nellieshoals that is pretty much exactly her stance and she all but flat out admits it in a later season. Granted it isn't a legitimate confession of guilt on her part, no, no. Instead she tells the model(in the later season...10 I believe?)that she's too big to be a "regular" model and since she was losing weight she was now no longer big enough to be a plus sized model and that she didn't fit anywhere. It's all so incredibly absurd. I'm so sad this show is still being aired(just reruns)it would be infinitely better if they just aired things like this video, call those SOB's out and publicly shame them instead. Vile excuses for human beings. Mr. Jay, Tyra, all of the judges.
