Your channel is also allowing non-professionals to appreciate the intricacies and beauty of great photography. People often think that holding back creates mystery, but they don’t recognise that humans are insatiable. The more we learn about a topic the more interesting it becomes. When you start to really understand something, your respect and value of it grows. The more knowledge and passion is shared and moved around, the more people will start to appreciate great work and pay the value it deserves. The pond becomes a lake, and all boats rise.

Excellent comment 🔥and so true.. the mystery is in the ability to perceive interesting photos not in the technical ability to capture them!! That’s why I preach following instincts so much: everyone’s perception is unique so everyone has the ability to create unique work.. learning how someone does flash or whatever isn’t going to make them like you

All this becoz there is a huge market for mediocrity and senselessness caused by pointless axiety...if people were 10% sensible, all genuine and creative endeavours move frictionlessly and there is room for every one to enjoy and accomplish. While confusion and self-centred anxiety reins, rat race of meaninglessness starts...it is more than photographers or any other professionals, it is the nature of mediocre society that is causing all this chaos...if we all take a deep breath and have sense prevail, we will have for sure better times...hope it happens sooner...I had been a tech professional at the cutting edge for a long period, I know a thing or two on professionalism...for more insights, one may have a look at great Prof David Graeber's insightful work on "bullshit jobs"...peace.

the worst place i was ewer in was a seminar for wedding photographers in Greece were i am it might have been the best seminar i went , ever !!!! but , 20 people unable to conect with each other and maybe make a new colaboration , I remember the one week it lasted i was among people the partisipents , but never more isolated than this . Every one had an imaginary wall around him trying to ''protect'' what the ''had'' and even the way one looked at each other was like if you were there to steal his job . I don't know what's happened lately, I've moved to a community that seem haters of anyone with pro gear. To the point I'm ready ro throw the white towel in. One example at a school prom; a lady with her phone hogged the entrance to a limousine until it drove off, she must of took 60 plus shots of her son. It was a clear deliberate attempt to block me.On the same day, two others deliberately sabotaged group shots. One shouted over, " You expect me to pay for YOUR photos when I can do it myself!!" There was muted chuckles of laughter in the crowd. Its the same with weddings and sports events. I'm quite an empathetic person, and I've had my fair share of proper " kick in the teeth" moments lately. To the point I've not done any further bookings this year. I've always been enthusiastic and passionate in sharing my knowledge to others. However, this particular community is quite young and clearly live in their social media quick fixations. No time for Art, finesse, or edication in any way.

@@TheMonochromeMemoirsI'm based in the UK, and I just get the impression that anyone with a phone can naturally do a better job. One more example. I took a photo of a young teen at a wedding. Off camera flash with 105 mm set at f1.4. Lovely soft bokeh balls in the background from all the party lights Rembrant style lighting. It couldn't have been any better. The young teen absolutely loved the photo. "You must show my mom!!" She shouted. After a bit of persuasion I walked over to her mom and showed her. Without her even looking at the image properly the back of my camera, she said to her daughter, "I've got photos of you like that on my phone!" Well!!.....I could've thrown her out of the window! I never felt so demorolised

@@harvymckiernan93 dude I think any photographer in the world has been there.. Ive showed so many people images off the back of my camera that never got the excitement I thought they deserved... Let me preface by stating I am not a professional photographer. However I have been involved in photography since the film days and have recently purchased a business license to do legit business as a photographer. I absolutely agree with your statements in this video. Too many people feel that withholding information makes them better because they fear others beating them. It comes down to this video… What you give amplifies what you reap! If someone becomes “better” than you… then use that drive to become better yourself! Share with others… life isn’t always about money. Helping someone else improve is worth more than any paycheck! Thank you for your content! Dutch

The photography industry was much worse in the 80s and 90s at least in the new york area,....now it's all about social media so the amount of time you spend on it...and the images will see you..today it's a price war, how much can they get for a dollar, and how much people will give away for free....in a perfect world that would be the best way to approach our industry my friend, I can talk about this shit for hours...

Absolutely Brilliant Video, Totally behind you on this one, I have been in two or three careers in my lifetime, and in only one of these have I felt that I wanted to get out as fast as I started to be good and then noticed by other photographers around me! There is a problem YES! and it has to do with IMO the fact and lets be honest most of the photographers who get to run a business know all too well that there is less to their skill than they care to admit there is. This leaves them feeling vulnerable considering the initial cost of setting up in the first place and then becoming defensive with a false blown-up representation to others that they are somehow more special. I know many Artists (painters and sculptors) and you will find no closer community than in their circles, sharing ideas, etc, these great humans are professional. In the end, I also felt it was best, to be honest, and leave wedding couples out of my plans, enjoy sharing my images with the world, and get the hell out! and away from a business full of people so into themselves that I just started to feel it was all not good for their or my own mental health !!! Great video !!!!!

100%!! I think a lot of photographers reach a point where they feel like they can just cruise and not keep improving.. BIG MISTAKE When you do creative work for a living there is no point in which you can just set it to autopilot, art demands growth or you will fall behind that’s just the nature of the line of work. So people find some consistency then want to hang on that and it makes them feel vulnerable like you said. So much so that some people will want to sabotage others so they don’t have to put in work on their own craft. It’s too bad

Yes it is big competion, because every first who enters photography thinks they can earn eady money fast and hobby photographers earn as much as pro because they do it cheaper, worse and public. Hobby should be private. But some people who do it long enough is ok if you lift someone and help build brand. But not all are serious. Im jelaous also, because i have two kids, my experience, talent should be more recognized. And i sense future trends etc etc...well...i think negative emotions also is ok to feel. Just need to accept them.

An excellent and very relevant video to our modern world Will. There is more work now more than ever but as you said in a previous video anyone with a top level smartphone or advanced compact camera thinks they're a pro photographer. These people have a cutthroat mindset and they are forcing their way into the traditional pro photographers business. This video is excellent for a new, young, up and coming pro photographer to help them see that by being a good, quality person they will have a very successful business. This applies in all fields. I've always given technical information wanted and unwanted. It always came around. When I was in business for myself, I had to refer people to other technicians because I was overwhelmed. It seemed the more I shared with the effort to reduce workloads the more work I ended up with. Sorry, I do have to contradict you on one thing. It's not old school to withhold info or whatever else. I'm over 60 and what I've discovered is the ones who shouldn't be in their profession because they don't seek improvement and just want to get by are the ones who play this competition game. They do everything minimally and if something goes wrong (because it requires practiced skills) they are usually pretty good at reversing it on you and calling it out publicly it's your fault( a race to beat you at the punch when it was never your intention.) These folks are usually pretty good marketers though, I guess that's needed for them as repeat business is usually not an option available. I've met artists who couldn't draw. You're probably going huh? Yep, recently I met someone who calls themselves a photographer unable to define a wide angle lens. Yep the automatic world is making experts. Watch out for them if you need custom work. In fact get out of their way and make sure others close to you don't get entangled into their deceit.

Always was. Doing art shows showing my b&w prints in the 70s through 90s, most of the photographers (a lot in our area) were so afraid of giving away "secrets" that they would hardly talk to one another. One photographer friend and myself would spend our time laughing at them. As a group they are a defensive lot. By the way, still doing b&w and love hearing from others who do. But I will admit I never sought "success" - just as afraid of that as failure. In between is much more relaxing.

Well said brother! "Comparison is the thief of joy." I always welcome other photographers to my studio and I extend that to you if you're ever in the north of the UK.

@@TheMonochromeMemoirs the topic you spoke on is life changing and timely. Though a lot of life is “solo”, I feel there are challenges we humans face, great and small, that cannot be solved without working together. Nonetheless, we lose sight of that fact. Your point about contributing to the lives of others as being one of the most important things in life is such a big thing. A great leader once said, “The greatest among you, will be your servant.”. Service is at the core of this life.

I have a few years behind me. When I owned a computer store I lived by this same philosophy. Without any advertising when I took over a dieing store, I did 60,000 in sales. 5,000 for this month was projected because it typically is the slowest month of the year. I attribute this to only one thing. The philosophy you are speaking about in this video but with computers. This philosophy was given to me by Professor Pat Mahon, early developer of OCR in the 80's. Now I've studied Art and Photography since I was 20(63 now)as a hobbyist/Semi-Pro. Even had a great teacher in the film days who was a student in N.Y. involved with Steiglitz and I think E.B. Minor. He was tough. Had me in the lab testing papers and chemicals for just the darkest blacks with various papers. Preferred I Shot medium/large format with Graphlex 4X5 Press Camera. He also lived by this philosophy and took me under his wing in the on-base lab. I've had the same fortune with another artist tied in with University Of Minnesota and duck stamps at the time in the 90's. Now I have had Major setbacks in life but am trying to get ready to retire. I've setup a basic web foundation with the explicit purpose for developing the philosophy of which your trying to convey. It would not have been possible to do without the gifts of time from these people. As gratitude for these great things givin' to me this is my attempt to pass on these gifts. In fact I may have stumbled onto a way to share these gifts freely without "giving away the store" -which is what people fear. It needs much more refinement, but here's the modern problem. Everybody trying to charge money for what should be shared, especially in light of the rapidly advancement of A.I. Since everyone's trying to charge especially with trickery, or breadcrumbs people assume what I plan or offer for free has hidden costs. In otherwords, it can't possibly be free. I can't afford to advertise. So right now, I operate at a snails pace at sharing info. At a snails pace doesn't seem to work in today's world now either. So the root of the problem may not be photographer's are competing and beating each other to death. The root of the problem is the commitment of time it takes to pass the information on and the secondary issue is the belief that anything of real value isn't freely given at the least without some form of hidden cost. Because of these issues growth is stifled and high tech uses photographers. Ages ago it was the opposite photographers growth outpaced the tech requiring clever ways to create. So the trick again is to share info so photographers can outpace the tech. Especially with the onset of A.I. (Otherwise A.I. will bury us). Steiglitz did it with philosophy which was photography was art. Ansel Adams did it with zone 10 photography with chemical and photopaper advancements. We're not doing a thing except waiting for A.I. to spoon feed us new tech. There are some techs being exploited to advanced levels in Asia. Apple, Facebook, know 3d, AR, is around the corner but where's innovative photographers exploiting these techs. Well, here's the answer. In the days of Ansel Adams it was proclaimed these individuals did it themselves. Self-made!? Far from the facts. Sure he saw and pressed that shutter button. Yet he had ties to people and info the average person didn't have plus he was willing to WORK. In combination, he pushed the tech beyond it's boundary. What boundary are we pushing as photographers now. Well in his time paper, coatings, chemical developments, dynamic ranges from absolute white of the paper to the blackest black possible. What would he be pushing today? Well AMOLED TV's? Perhaps 3d Photography techniques, what info and platform for dynamic range. I can tell you I saw some dramatic effects in Korea, Japan and China. Where's it at in the U.S.? Where's the engineers, like in the days of Kodak, in the U.S. who will disperse the info. Are we too late? Or are we still sharing turn of the century info. The answer is yes and no. The info is being regulated by our greed but mostly by our unwillingness to organize into groups because we simply believe we can do it ourselves(when it never was). Like I said I think I have the foundation to the solution of the problem. The words I use to describe it are "Virtual Cooperative" and "Virtual Atelier". I have been long winded. Sorry. You inspired me. Here's my sharing of free info for the day.

P.S. There's a way to do this and make a living. The method I'm speaking about gives the artists and photographers more time to work while sharing marketing resources causing to them to grow due to membership organization and size. The group exploits tech. together, but they must organize and WORK.

Photography has become more accessible with great hardware for lower prices and obviously the shift to digital photography. But actual knowledge of how photography works seems to be as rare as it has always been (if not more now). I have seen professional photographers with fancy equipment take absolutely trash pictures at weddings. I always wondered if they just didn’t care to know how to do better because there are so many ways to learn these days. It feels like only very few people really care about the craftsmanship behind photography. And these few people should come together and support each other instead of competing. Love this message from you!
