It seems to me that the other commercial photographers who say you've sold out, simply don't like competition. I see your videos as you being kind enough to take the time to share your knowledge and help improve the careers of other up and coming photographers. Your videos have helped me a great deal and I'm very thankful to you for doing what you do.

I shot a lot of jewelry over the last decade or two, a simple shot for me was someone prepping the jewelry, a stylist to set up the jewelry, a tech to help with lights, and of course myself. That is for a simple project. Bigger projects can get really complex. The only things I shoot by myself are still-life art projects, but it takes me all day or a couple of days to shoot one art still life. :P

Hey Scott, appreciate your no bullshit videos. I'm just getting started with learning photography and videography and it's refreeshing to hear someone else's journey and more so, how you made it through and providing this insight so that others may not have to learn the hard way. NOT going with the flow of society and mindlessly spending [consumers - hate that word ~ money on subscriptions and materialism to feel good about oneself is vanity, spot on. It makes much more sense to spend money on things we really, deeply enjoy, be it for respit or evolution. Cheers and keep doin' what you're doin' brother!

As a pro for 24 years, KZbin has given me an excuse to focus again on work and ideas that I can do for me. It has literally saved me from creative starvation and also fatigue. It has made me love taking photos again. On film. Also, I basically just wear black and mostly look the same...bar my green jersey I wear when the studio is cold! And it shoes in my videos 😅

I love having a KZbin channel. I don’t get the time to do many videos but I started it during lockdown specifically to learn video.

Brilliant video! And as a pro photographer cosplaying as a KZbinr I am right there with you! My thing is that I want to learn to make documentary films and making a KZbin channel seemed a good crash course in filmmaking! Thank you! You are appreciated

Hello Scott, just found your channel, what a fantastically positive video. The amount of videos in which I see people complaining about giving up their time and all the effort it takes. So much more refreshing to hear 'If you enjoy it, do it, the benefits aren't just measured in what you earn from it'. Gets my subscription. Regards Jay

I only dabble in photography and I never have had a need to hire a professional for any kind of photo shoot. But I watch videos from A LOT of different professions, and I can only WISH I could commission those creators to work for me in their mainline trade. If nothing else, I know a lot more about what I should be expecting from those professions that I do need locally and it makes it more likely I will be able to get my desired result from their work and reduce "misses". To my mind it also works as a force to elevate the bar for that profession overall. As a prospective client, being able to access a back catalog of KZbin videos by them seems like a huge benefit. I can get a better idea of what they truly do, how they do it, and a better guess at their working temperament for my project. It also helps me avoid being "that" kind of bad client. It's a two way street. Kudos to you, Sir. And Thank you.

Of course, the other photographers aren't your biggest fans, you're out here teaching us so much of it - basically breeding their next competition! Whatever you say, especially when you give away some of your knowledge and help us level up in our careers that is sure to bring a bit of green-eyed monster out. Well, you're a charming bloke with no filter who says it like it is. Truth hurts, not everyone can handle the truth!

It all sounds so simple and reasonable when you talk about it (I mean the why, not the how ;-)). Maybe because it just is … 😁 Even though I'm at the end of my work life (some years left that I *have* to do paid work), and don't want to get into professional photography, I still very much enjoy what you put out here and especially the way you do it!

Brilliant indeed, same reason I’ve started making youtube-vids as well, fill my downtime between web projects with something creative, allowing me to learn new skillsets and be creative in a different way than my normal work, which come think of it involves both being a freelance web consultant *and* owning a roller skate shop which might not be considered normal but it’s my normal so .. uh, yeah, variety is great :)

I had no idea that doing youtube like this was a faux pas... I'm grateful for what you share... I wonder if it's potentially looked down upon in that the commercial photo industry wants to be 'exclusive' and you share a bit of that world with us... I don't know.. but I definitely appreciate your practical approach to the business...

I do some copywriting and graphic design with photography mostly as a hobby, and even with my background I've noticed how much opportunity I'm missing out on by not jumping on video. So many small-timers who can't afford a marketing agency want video.

I don't believe this is a healthy mindset. There are some realities that photographers need to understand in 2024. They are namely; Cameras have got extremely good. They can meter extremely accurately, eye detect accurately, their colour science is solid, their white balance is generally in the correct ballpark, etc. This is no longer the year 1976, when you had to know how to focus, meter, expose, etc. Software has also got extremely good. With a few clicks of a button, I can correct bad horizons and fix keystone issues, masks, etc, effortlessly. It has never taken less skill to achieve a reasonable and in-focus image. This has led to a massive influx of freelance photography. That is why so many talk about creativity, etc, now instead of complex technical skills like using a camera manually with a split diopter focusing patch, very limited shutter speeds, understanding film types, developing and darkroom skills. They are no longer relevant things to know in the mirrorless era and with software today. That means instead of looking at this as, "How can I earn money with a camera?" The question is now, "How can I make this camera earn me as much money as possible?" Almost all cameras today take still images and video, and there have never been more platforms to monetise those images and video. The founding goal of any business or career is to make money and progress. I would say with confidence that the days of making ALL your income just with photos are ending. The days of using your camera as many different ways to make money are just beginning. You'd be a fool to not explore all options of how a camera can make you money today. That is the polar shift. Instead of people asking how can I make money and what tools do i need? its a question of, I have these tools..how can they be leveraged to make money.

@@michaelmoss2901 Man, you really chose the wrong answer. I picked a camera for the first time, and in under 2 years, I was already signed as a food content creator, recipe developer and principal photographer for the largest food magazine in the southern hemisphere. One year after that event I was hired to shoot a table of 8 people doing the exact thing you just described. 3 years..repeat that with me. 3 years. That is from the first day of picking up a camera and not knowing what aperture, iso or anything was. You perfectly just proved my point. At no time in photography history could someone with no formal training go from picking a camera to recurring publishing work and advertising in that time. How did i do it? Technology is a lot better. It doesn't matter if my shot is 2 stops under. I don't need to consider if the eye is in focus, I don't need to worry if the shadows are too crushed. That's how. Thanks for exactly proving my point. I will say this, I had a vast amount of experience in restaurants leading up to this moment, but that was as a chef..not a photographer. You may not like it, but there is no way in 3 years I could have managed this in any decade before it where the craft of using a camera and darkroom would have taken far longer a time investment to learn.

@@michaelmoss2901 If guerilla is a publication with a readership of 800k+, then yes, that's what I did. We also had a guerrilla art director and guerrilla models. Face it, man, the technology has completely levelled the playing field, which is what I said. You are watching the proof. Here is a food photographer. He got a black magic camera. What did he know of video editing? What did he know of youtube? Scripting? he would have known nothing..yet here it is in a few from COVID with a successful channel that probably covers his low-hanging fruit costs of living. The technology to take an image or video has made the barrier to entry very easy. It would not be very intelligent for him not to pursue it. That's the reality today. Witht he barrier being so low that increases vendors to the market, so it makes sense to monetise the camera, not yourself.
