@@MartinCastein Can’t wait! Really appreciate theses videos. The megapixel wars have gotten out of control. My first camera in 2011 was a 30d and i shot the camera for 7 years with a 50 1.4 until the shutter died. I could see the major improvements over the years on that camera. Many people with newer gear were confused as to why the images from that combination looked better than theirs. Gear matters to an extent but not nearly as much as most people think. Keep up the good work.

I have been looking at switching to a mirrorless system but due to my financial constraints I really couldn’t make the switch so I have made the decision to keep my D800 and add a low cost D90 as a back up and as you say get on with making images not comparing camera specs. My story: I fell into shooting events for non profits as a volunteer several years ago (I am in the SE USA). It was maybe 5-6 a year. My main camera was a 6D. In 2019 it had reached about 12 or more a year. I enjoyed it, the non profits were very happy and I learned a lot (unfortunately by making mistakes). Then the pandemic hit and it went to zero for two years. But now we are back and there are one or two a month (four this month). An hour ago I was accepted by our city parks and recreation department as a paid photographer based on the portfolio I threw together. I also have a paid event tomorrow night. Is it hard work? Yes it is. There are time pressures and good images of key moments are expected. And you have to show up, earlier the better, and interact with guests. Do I need the money? Not for survival but my GAS needs feeding. But mainly it is pride, satisfaction and the good feelings about benefitting organizations by producing images they find valuable. Non profits cannot afford to pay a photographer but by working free, you receive lots of benefits over time. No one cares what kind of equipment you have - they just want some decent results. Sorry for long comment.

AMEN! You nailed it Martin. A year ago I invested in buying a few old school lenses for my so called antique D750. Some photographers are joking about it, but I don’t care. I do mainly portrait/fashion and the women are loving the photos I made. They say, they look very different from all the other photographers I’ve been. That’s exactly what I want, “looking different” and not being mainstream. I love the output of these classic lenses, the models don’t have to know why I look different, they are coming bach for me and my photography. There is no better satisfaction in this.

I was so impressed by a video you shared of a wedding you photographed with a pare of Nikon D610’s. I have a D610. An excellent, capable camera, but not Nikons championed top of the line camera at the time. Martin; the images you created are stunning. You made the D610, an advanced enthusiast camera, according to Nikon; Sing. Not only the equipment, but who is using it.

Great philosophy and advice Martin. For me, I wanted to try my hand at dog photography, I had a Nikon D5000 which couldn't cut it so bought an ancient Nikon D300 and a nifty 50, all up $200 NZ Dollars. About a year later and I've had such a great response from my photos I'm working on a portfolio, moving into portraits as wheel as pets, to start a business, the only difference is I splashed out on a Nikon 85mm prime, $200 NZ. I'll keep the same kit until it can't do what I need it to and even then, whatever I buy will be used and still under $1000, as long as it gets the job done.

Understandable. The d5k series, d3k series and the older d60, d40, d40x can’t AF with most Nikon lenses and have only 1 scroll knob for both aperture and shutter speed. Not that you can’t take your great photos with them, but they’re so handicapped. The d300 is a beast!

Photography is ...using your gear and once in a while to step out of one's comfort zone and discover new things. Something I always tell my students. Forget about auto-focus and focus yourself on the subject. It is not the gear but the EYE.

Nice one Martin. I have a colleague who is constantly telling me about his GFX 100 MP camera. We both primarily shoot interiors full time. He has a full Profoto set up, I use one crappy Godox speed light and a secondhand R6. You wouldn’t tell the difference of the shots we deliver unless you pixel peeped.

I've always wanted a Leica Summilux 1.4/50 ASPH as part of my five lens (maximum) system (got an A7RIII I got cheap, open box). Got a TTartisan 1.4/50 ASPH instead, open box deal, as new £109 inc delivery. It's 95% the same as a Summilux once I put a large hood set up on it. No lens has brought me such joy.

Excellent advice. My favorite digital camera turns 20 in September, it has 8 whole megapixels and gives mr great joy to use it. The Kodak sensor produces beautiful sunsets. I have other newer digital cameras, purchased pre owned from the upgrade fanatics and I love them. Hope to get back out next month to capture more abandoned treasures.

Too true, just came back from Barbados with a couple of humble compacts, the Fujifilm x30 and its bigger brother the Fujifilm X-S1. I found a 2/3 sensor putting out a mighty 12mp more than adequate for my needs, and the level of control that these units afforded me more than met my expectations. I left bulky older Canon full frame units(5d mk ii and 6d) at home and can honestly say that I didn't feel under equipped in the slightest. As long as a camera has enough controls to allow you to realise your vision, that's the important consideration. As always, thanks for the dose of eminent common sense and valuable insight.

Very best video on this subject! It is always the same story, most people think they can get creativity and experience by buying the latest model. 8, 12, 24 61 MP, what`s next? I bought a used D700 some months ago and use old lenses and yes, I am thinking about buying the newest mirrorless system. But what for? I have to say it is hard work to become a good fotographer and there is like many other things no shortcut. In the end it is the result that counts, the foto. No matter what equipment is used.

Another dose of (common) sense! Most of my photography is equine related, mainly eventing with a bit of what you could call "casual" travel stuff and I was doing that on a 6D with a 70-200 f4 and a 50 f1.8 - not really ideal for the former subject, but the images just look beautiful when you get it right. The only bugbear is having to use the centre focus point and the slow burst rate in AI Servo, so I landed a 5D3 from a used clearance sale 2 months ago because the focus system and burst rate should help me out. The camera turned out to be absolutely mint (no idea how!), cost me peanuts and is wonderful - the results so far have been awesome when I get it right. Trouble is, I find myself reluctant to use the 5D3 all the time because its in perfect condition. And I just love that 6D... Help!

Great video, Martin, I like my old DSLR's. These include a Nikon D700, D3S, D500 and I nearly bought a D800. Then I thought why am I buying this D800 (approx £500) as I have already got a good selection of cameras so instead, I bought a good quality inflatable kayak so I could get to more interesting places to take photos and this has been one of the best purchases I have ever made. Not only am I getting more interesting photos but thoroughly enjoying the kayaking. WIN WIN 😀 10:33 10:33

I'm going to Castleton at half term with the family and will be doing some landscape photography. Not earth-shattering, but it will be nice to photograph an unfamiliar part of the Peak District. In Summer 2024 I will be photographing the Normandy and Brittany coast and the countryside, towns and cities, again on a family holiday. I love photographing unfamiliar landscapes; it really enhances the travel experience for me, I entirely agree with your sentiments, Martin. I must confess I was delighted to find a mint condition used Canon 70-200 L IS Mk 1 at LCE Manchester on my birthday recently, but I had researched the purchase recently partly with your kind advice and your lens review, and had decided that it would be a good addition to my kit. My philosphy when beginning full frame DSLR photography last year was to buy purely with a view to creating quality images, and I bought a Canon 6D because of the quality of images derived from its sensor, a 24-105L and this latest 70-200 L on this basis. All this is used kit albeit purchased in excellent condition, and I am amazed at the image quality.

Great advice Martin! We all suffer from GAS more or less, instead of thinking and acting more realistically. In practice one does not really need so much expensive stuff. What counts is talent, experience, and endurance. I came to the conclusion that I do not really need a f/1.2 50mm lens - the Nifty Fifty RF 50mm f/1.8 lens does an excellent job, and I bought it for ridiculous 120 CHF. There’s a national forest a couple hours drive from us - drove through a section but didn’t have any gear along. I have wanted to go back up to shoot - several trailheads are easily accessible by car and lead up to some stunning vistas. It’s winter now as I’m writing this and I love the light. There are several big horned sheep herds and it’s a corridor for California condors. I’d already been thinking of going up next weekend while my teenagers are out of town. This video (and several others of yours! I have a 5D Mii) were the push I needed. Thanks for all you share!

What a spot-on, important discussion/observation about the myth that "owning" the best gear will be the gateway to accomplishing meaningful work. This is so true in so many different walks of life, not just photography. Hand's down, the most useful, impactful piece of photography gear that has made meaningful work possible for me was a 59 cent notebook. That book, along with the daily habit of writing/journaling, clarifying , dreaming, planning, noticing, led to more important photos and photo/experiences than any other piece of gear I've ever owned.

I love watching your shows Martin. This one inspired me to repeat the beautiful photo event. A few years ago I rented an entire modern theater, invited a friend who knows how to work well with lights and invited some interesting people as models. Our meeting was not only an amazing photographic experience, but also a lot of unforgettable photos. Although I am very busy at work and I rarely do similar events, but as you rightly said - go make your dream come true. This event was beneficial not only for me, the models and my friend, but also the operator of the theater got photos that he rightly brags about to this day.

Great video Martin, it a real shame that more people on KZbin don't speak common sense but I truly believe common sense is no longer common. Everyone is pandering to the brands like Fujifilm and the likes, in the hope that they might get some kind of sponsorship or something. I went to Lisbon at the end of January for 3 nights which cost me less than £300 including flights, I bought my first camera in July last year, a Canon 1300D I got paid for my first headshot pictures in December. I've just upgraded my 1300D for a 70D but would never consider buying any of these mirrorless cameras and I do not listen to any of the marketing BS from any company. Ansal Adams once said, "The single most important component of a camera is the twelve inches behind it!" your only need to look at some of the best ever pictures that any photographer has taken such as Afgan Girl by Steve Mc Curry that was taken with a Nikon FM2 people need to understand you don't need 80% of the crap that's in cameras today. If you fully understand the Exposure Triangle and composing a shot you can work magic take Ricard Avedon and Irving Penn's work for examples. The Troubled Photographer.

Martin, you couldn't be more right! Reminded me of something I recently read on the 'net: “My advice to young people is: don’t go there,” Munger added. “The hell with the pretentious expenditure. I don’t think there’s much happiness in it.” Charlie Munger, Berkshire Hathaway's Vice Chairman at the time, was 99 when he died so he probably meant (all) people when he said “young people”. All people includes us photographers as well, I'm sure. I still remember the joy of being out there shooting with a camera back in the day. Just looking at my 7-year-old mirrorless camera on my desk here now, instead of being out there with it, is making me sad. Thanks for a kick in the pants! Gotta go!!

I live in a major european city and have taken to jist carrying my camera everywhere I go. I do a lot of street photography, particularly at night. Any time i'm at an event i'll typically ask an organiser if i can do some slightly more serious shooting than the average smartphone owner. I'm purely an ameture i'm in it for the fun i don't need the stress of having a client. What i am always taken aback by at social events is when i get chatting with someone about photography, typically holding my brick of a full frame slr in my hands as we chat, is how I always get asked the same question "aren't you scared it'll get broken carrying it around all the time" I don't every know how to process this world view that expensive things must be wrapped in cotton wool. My camera is a tool, just an expensive hammer. So i typically glibly reply "It's insured" (it's not) Watxhing this video made me feel way more comfortable about my attitute towards photography. For many years I always carry a camera (sometimes w/ flash) everywhere; I still do. Leaving office for dinner in late pm, instead of walking directly A to B, I'd do the round-about, (re)visiting & (re)photo_g places and light was failing.(it's FILM!) Security at the door prob.always wondered why this guy always carried a bag to dinner when he always returned 2 hrs later. In the 80's when it was already dark out there, & ur camera was not in use but not in a bag, ur sending invitations. People were robbed suite jackets & expensive sneakers in subways in the dead of winter. Seeing gals w/ camera strapped on body at night these days was unimaginable. Yes there are interesting areas of the city for photos, but walking into some areas as an outsider, even w/o expensive hammers these days, can still give me the creeps. I carry at least 1 camera in all possible nite hours, but only in known areas I can feel safe. After all this is not Berlin. Safe shooting to all.

The `Top Trumps` analogy is spot on. Most people who own cameras are not even photographers. A photographer can get lovely images with the cheapest camera out there. I think 6-10 megapixels is about the best.

There are optimistic individuals with camera gear more expensive than 60/80 inch latest TVs . Out to capture a seagull, boat , tractor or family snap . Your point I think , is the transition to specific purpose and the excitement of setting your own goals . My hope was to actually sell images ( not weddings ) and I did , but not enough to make a living . ( I met my goals )

You have saved me a lot of money (because I kept my 6D, on your advice, instead of a pointless "upgrade"). A guy in my photo club has a 1 year old Nikon Z6 24Mp and was explaining that he is going to upgrade to the Z7 "for the 45megapixels, so I can crop"). He's an amateur, so he can't recoup the money. I am in the process of telling him to buy lenses for his Z6, because the Z6 seems like science-fiction compared to my 20Mp 6D. I have never once thought 20Mp wasn't enough. There's only ONE thing I would like .... eye-detect auto-focus. I shoot wide-open portraits and I'd like the camera to take care of the eye focus, while I chat with the subject. PS. I couldn't resist. I just bought (from MPB) an immaculate Canon 1D mk2N. What a beast. 8Mp. £220 (Down from about £4,000 in 2005). I bloody love it. £220 !!!!!!! in original box...etc. You gotta love these perfectly good classics at these prices.

I think alot of us starting out largely because of marketing got it in our heads that "better" meaning newer gear will somehow make you a better photographer instead of shooting more will make you a better photographer. I never really could afford the new stuff so it never really mattered much. But I also learned very quickly shooting alot with gear that is good enough to get the job done is all that really matters.

I'm glad I found your channel. I have a tendency to buy the latest stuff within my budget. I've had a Canon T3i for years and not really any good glass. I wanted to upgrade and discovered with your help I could get a 5D very reasonably. I went with the 5D Mk2 and a 50mm 1.8 thanks to your input. I've had it about a month. Landscape photography is what I tend to shoot the most. I'm really trying to hold off getting any more lenses before I learn this 50. The 1.8 aperture is a new challenge after my T3i kit lenses.

wow this is such a great channel, watched 5 of your videos in a row. I was researching why i shouldn't upgrade my camera gear, I've got an awesome camera and lens set that i use daily on my children's candid moments, yet i'm considering getting a new lens and a new camera body. The one i've got the canon r6 is already amazing, and i'm lusting over the r6mk2 or the upcoming r5mk2 which won't make any difference. All i do is send photos to my family on whatsapp and store in albums on google drive, that's basically it and force my self to print some photo books. I ended up selling 2 lens i didn't use, got one cheaper smaller lens that was in between but a pancake so it's small and easy to carry around and i've been using that lens daily. can' wait to watch more of the videos on your channel! thanks for this refreshing take on camera gear and photography

The point is, that you often fall into the trap of thinking that the newer gear will be better. I recently sold my Nikon Z6ii which I bought to replace my D750, because I thought it might be time to jump on the mirrorless train, since everybody says it’s the future. After having it for a while I started to realise that I don’t use any of the features it offers - I’m not into video, I don’t need any turbo-autofocus because the things I usually photograph don’t run away from me, I hate it to look in another TV-screen (EVF), I don’t like the poor battery live (compared to DSLR), etc. At the end of the day I stopped using it, shooting most of my photos on the D750 again. Being a rather seasoned photographer I should have known that, but I’ve still made the mistake.

Low light sometimes makes me long for faster glass, but then I see how nice the Nikon 80-200mm f2.8 ED works (as an example…and I paid $100 for it last year). And very few items sit on my shelf without getting some loving use! Anyway, excellent video and wisdom here. Thanks for posting it.

I haven't had a dedicated photo trip for a few months now. I took a few random snaps of mist in the mountains last weekend but I haven't looked at them on the computer yet. For the inspirational trip, I think I need to take a friday or monday off and have a long weekend camping trip near things I want to see and photograph. It's coming into Winter here in the Southern Hemisphere so the insects will be nice and docile.

Spot on again. I didn't get the EF 600mm f/4L IS III. Instead use the EF 400mm f/5.6L on 7D and get 640mm reach. The images are great, no complaints.

Photography is a difficult and toxic environment. You need something to hold on to, to make you feel strong. When I went from Olympus to Nikon people started to trust my "abilities", some customers even looked first at my equipment before they let me do my work. I'm using a 6D and a 5DsR with a clear preference of the 6D but people still ask why I'm using such a "tiny" camera until the see the results. Therefore: Maybe you need to have a 1D to find out that you don't need one. Thank you so much for your brilliant recommendations!!!

One of your best videos/discussions I went thru much the same as your talk, everyone was raving about mirrorless and gear acquisition was building, thankfully went to a actual shop and tried them out and tried to see how one would actually expand or improve things and quickly realised if anything they would reduce my options. A lot of the lenses I owned and loved would now become manual focus, need adapters etc, and any new lenses I bought would not fit my older and loved gear and my shutter would become electronic only with no choice and the more advanced stabilisation focus etc would be trying to cure a problem that I didn’t actually have. Call me a Luddite I don’t care but until things start to break I’m sticking with what I’ve got!

I’m 56 and can afford new gear. My newest camera is my X-Pro 1 (bought used 5 years ago) and my oldest is a Minox A from 1954, which I use a lot! I also have a 5D mk1 and a Nikon D200, as I have a few Nikkor Ai lenses.

Hey friend, I'm in camera decision purgatory over here. Have been for months. I used to do videography work with some photography, the last cameras I used before changing careers were the Canon 5D and 7D. Became a cartoonist and a stay at home dad for 13 years and now I find myself for the first time with perhaps a tiny amount of extra time to reintroduce a hobby. For me I am considering trying to relearn photography specifically, with the smaller sub-interest in messing around a bit with video too (though video is not so much a consideration I am putting too much weight into yet - photography forward for now). Anyway, I have about $500 max that I think I can justify on this hobby right now. I've never experienced mirrorless, and things have changed so much. Recently I've been considering the following old guys as a way to have a machine to mess around with again. No sense breaking the bank this early on. The cameras I can't decide on: 5D, 5D ii, 7D, D700. Any advice about those choices? Is it stupid in 2024 to even consider any of these? Should I be looking elsewhere? I want to avoid constantly dreaming about the next possible camera. I just want to have fun and experience some of that old magic I remember, going out on the street and capturing the moment.

Hi there, I think you need to think about the lenses more, about what you might want but if i had to give you a camera to do a bit of everything it would be either the 5d ii or d700. the d700 has better focus and dynamic range and the 5d ii better colour. If you are ok with focus and recompose then grab a 5d ii with a 50mm 1.8 stm

I am a huge fan of one camera and one lens, and keep it as simple as possible. I bougth my first DSLR when I worked at a electronic store. Think it was a EOS 400. It worked fine..until I wanted to shoot a fox at nigth under a single ligth bulbe. It came out as an orange blub! :D Then I asked myself why? And I read up, a LOT took a couple of classes. Upgraded to a 7D, then a 6D. And took a LOT of pictures, and learned a lot! I ended up being employed as a portrait photographer and have teached photography for years. Just bougth a 5d MK2 for 180 USD. That was the camera I started working with. And I love it!! So now I have only "old" cameras, 5D MK2, 6D, 70D and the first EOS M. And a lot of good glas. Wouldn't have it any other way. :)

I’m a retired multi-published Army combat Photojournalist looking to do BTS for indie films in Texas. Current gear: Fujifilm x100T & 5DmkIII w/ 40mm and hopefully adding an 85mm 1.8 soon! I like the work the camera companies have done to sell the camera gear to the non shooters, because I can pick up near new second hand when they up grade. A 10 to 12 year old full frame does all the quality I need. Trips: I started out on a cycling and photo trip in southern western Australia last year to travel the - Mundabiddi cycle track- 1074 Km, I think- Perth to Albany, but got spoiled when my bike got stolen, maybe try it this year again- during the wild flower season. After the bike got nicked, I flew to Adelaide- south oz, to see family and did photography there, the weather was shit, but good for clouds in the landscapes.

Exactly this! I was looking to upgrade from my Nikon D5600 to something more "Pro", in order to have the option I was missing (focus stacking, bracketing, m.up etc.) mainly because I was tired of doing everything by hand, or in post, and because I wanted to use more lenses, some that were better optically. So I started looking at older full frame DSLRs, and wend through the whole process of „if I just add a bit more, I can get the better model”. Was lucky enough to get a hold of a guy that wanted to upgrade to the Z8, because reasons, and was selling his D850 for almost a third of a brand new one. I thought it's a mistake at first, but his main purpose was to get the latest gear. So I obliged, and helped him move on from the D850, which I am very good friends with ever since 😅

All so right Martin. I started to take photography seriously as a hobby about twelve months ago. I have invested in some older gear, canon 5D ii plus lenses to fit. I decided to go down the route of buying some order equipment as apposed to modern all singing and all dancing kit because I want to learn about photography and not just how to press a button on a camera shutter release. The image that’s obtained is more than just a picture it’s all about the process and the experience of the shoot. Keep the informative videos coming please.

100% correct. Also what you say is true in every business. Many years ago in our business I wanted a computer to do new work that we could not do otherwise. We bought what we needed to DO what I wanted, the least expensive way. It was harder to do since the equipment and software was not ideal, BUT, it got the job done, and in fact we made money off it for many years and even used the software we developed for 25 years! To be in business you need to behave in the right way. We worked however many hours we had to, we had little income for quite a while. It takes work, sacrifice AND don't be afraid to do new things, even if you are not the best. You will learn. Buy used, be frugal.

Good video. My old camera is a nikon d3300, which was gifted to me. Now, I just got the D7500. I am very much an auto quick Point and shoot person. So this 7500 is a nice upgrade, for that. The D7500 while mine is brand new, the DX DSLR is old hat. But buying this one, has reignited my desire to learn more about photography. I really want to get to know my camera, this go round. I want learn the manual modes, and dig deep. I truly feel like this one, is the one I will have for years to come. I don’t see myself going to mirrorless, any time soon.

Camera Clubs , can demoralize if you're not careful . Leading exponents show a few ( of there very best ) images . But are they " selling images " . From a sales /marketing background what is commercial is everything I think ? This is photography - art , and what is good to you , is everything . But to sell an image ? or make a living like our host Mr Martin Castein is out there . Anyone can apply .

Martin what you said was interesting. I do use an Old camera, a 1962 Hassleblad 500c . And guess what I use a tripod fromm time to time. I also use an entry level Canon 1300d as well as a 5d mk4. I use different cameras for different effects and outcomes for either digital or film.

100% agree! Had gear paralysis for many years and feel much better with most of it now sold off and replaced with less gear of lower spec. And my photography is more creative. I bought a Canon 40D and a broken 90mm Tamron macro lens that was stuck wide open. I have always wanted to do flower photography and this was all I could afford. I practiced last year with this set up and learned a lot and took a few photos I am pretty proud of! I now have a fully functional 90mm macro lens. I can't wait for spring so I can go and do flower photography with it! While I wait I am doing practice shoots downtown taking pics of whatever interests me. It's lots of fun! There's always a way to do the thing that interests you. It doesn't have to be perfect you just have to get started.
