It's really crazy to put out there all the gate kept information about Commercial Photography on KZbin because most photographers have zero idea how a large budget ad campaign really gets shot and comes together. I once was on a Breitling shoot back around 2012 where we had a $350K budget, that's more than 99% of music videos shot in LA today. Of course those budgets for Commercial photography today is few and far between as well.

I'm a hobbyist and I'm in my '50s. I probably won't work as a photographer, but I spend everyday on photography and I'm loving it so much. I used to take black and white film shots in the 1990s, but I got tired of the expense. I take a lot of inspiration from commercial and fashion photographers. I love the way you talk about photography, and looking over your portfolio makes me so happy. You have a look, you have skills, and you can explain things really well.

I must admit the last two minutes were getting better and better each second. It hit me hard and opened my eyes. I'm an amateur aspiring to become a pro. I want to do everything on my own, but if I ever get to a level when I can afford an assistant or a retoucher (although I enjoy retouching) I'll be listening to these last two minutes of this video religiously. That part about being a translator was perfect. Probably one of the best of your videos.

Not as helpful for food and product, but for beauty, Set.A.Light has been a huge help for pushing my work an extra 10%. Its ability to match actual lighting scenarios has been great.

Well, probably one of the most important videos you've made, and I expect it will be one of the least viewed. But you knew that when you made it, didn't you? I've been following you for a year or so now even though I do mostly wildlife and I can't tell you how much of an impact you've had on my photography. Keep up the good work Scott!

As a retired adland art director who shoots in his kitchen extension .. I think of an idea, find someone to model ( more often than not, not a model) I make sure i tidy the kitchen and put the pots and pans away, put the cats out along with their bowls before i set up my background, Then put my laptop on my breakfast bar tether it to my Nikon D5 get my simple strobe out and then pace up and down till my model arrives. :-) Great video as always Scott.

Thanks for sharing. It might be worth to add that the benefit of all the prep work including taking notes will be the possibility to refer to it later on when you have a similar assignment and have a jump start. When I have completed one job, in addition I do sit down and take notes on what went right and wrong and if it is something to keep or how to improve next time.

LOVE THIS!!!! I always do light plots and figure it out before a shoot day with my clients. Sadly I set up the all the equipment because there is not budget for the rest. Once on set I massage the lighting get it perfect and direct the client to get the shots we need. Then shot extra because it never hurts to have more bangers that the client loves. This is promotional images for performers. Anyway, I love how you break it down for the photographer to have the vision and is the one who orchestrates it with their crew to make it happen under their supervision.

This is an excellent video. Having good equipment and knowing how to use it is certainly pertinent, but getting hung up on anything but how the actual result looks is all that ultimately matters. Thank you for emphasizing that key point. Enjoying your content.

My test shoot involves countless hours scouring google maps, driving around back roads finding subjects, finding property owners, gaining permission for access, taking daytime composition shots, waiting for the new moon phase, checking weather and clear sky app for that time frame, contact property owner to let them know when i plan on needing access, a minimum of 1 hour on location capturing more than enough images needed for the final image. Early milkyway season shots are taking place around 3-4am, gradually getting earlier as the weeks go by.

As a theatre lighting designer my approach is very similar. Have a game plan, ensure everyone has there role and get on with it. I take that same logic into my photography, scout the location, check the weather and when conditions are as good as hoped wake up at 6am and get to it. Preparation allows you to avoid the rush, and no one wants to be rushed- especially in the morning. Thanks

I am still early days in a career in photography and I can say that after countless hours editing, if I had enough work and client budget to hire an editor I most 1000% would. I love the process but it's hard, tedious work and I can't help myself to keep looking for problems that probably aren't visible unless someone pixel peeps at 200+%. Walking away with blurry vision is not a badge of honour. haha.

Proper preparation prevents piss poor performance. In nearly every endeavour, this is the difference between professional and amateur. Professionals just make it look easy, and that's where amateurs falter. They don't see all the preparation.

As an amateur, hobbyist photographer who photographs still life, i do plan my little set ups before hand. Because I do this on my own, all my planning is in my head (no one else needs to know). But i do mull through my ideas over a few days. My problem is, i get so fixated on how I've plan the shot, that i then lack a bit of creativity once I've got the photo. I should really then try something else, move the lighs, add another aspect to the set up. I think this would help me learn a bit more with what does and doesn't work.

here is what I do. Have an idea of what you want the image to look like, then plan for that. If it ends up not looking like you want, change the plan until it does. Don't make huge adjustments, make smaller ones at a time to see if you are moving in the right direction. It does 2 things, help you focus on the final product and teaches you how the small changes you make affect the image. Then just build upon that. I write my process in a notebook and write the problem and then the solution, so I can use it next time if needed.

A British guy summarised this to me in a tacky poetic way as: PPPPPP Prior Preparation Prevents Piss-Poor Performance - yes, prior is a pleonasm, but leave it out and people who work JFDI don't understand that preparation comes before execution.

I'm a nobody hobbyist, but here's my take. There is far too little understanding of the simple truth that a great photo comes from the mind of whoever is setting up the shot. Having the right gear and no creative sense won't get it done. Knowing all the technical principles but having no creative sense won't get it done. Because I've recognized this, I'm spending my primary effort on developing my image-making mind. Creativity is not my strong suit; I have a long way to go.
