Photographing Porlock Weir, Somerset. Black and White Moody Photography, on an overcast day

Using black and white photography to emphasise the gritty nature of the decaying trees at Porlock Weir was the aim of the day this week, an overcast cloudy day was forecast and the compositions you can get there can be striking and dramatic.
The plan was to scout out the classic composition and try to capture a different angle to my previous shots with mood in the sky. The possibility of long exposures was in the mix as well, but dramatic skies were my main goal. The day gave me straight forward shots, shots with foreground interest and something a little more unique. But as I struggled with what to photograph in flat light, with weather briefly broke and gave me the opportunity to shoot a composition I wouldn't have seen otherwise!

Nice one Steve, I been there a couple of times but yet to come away with something I'm please with. If you like fresh oysters, there's a great little place in Porlock that sells them, also a fantastic fish and chip shop.

Very informative vlog and very interesting. I have to correct you on a minor point though. The beach was deliberately breached by a workforce so that the flood plain would revert back to a natural salt marsh.

Re: 'mushy skies' in black & white. I often use a multiply blend mode to enhance the slightest detail. Of course, some 'photographers' will resort to doing a sky replace in PS but I find that's given away by lighting that does not match. Overcast suits me for black & white. Nice spot. Thanks for sharing.
