Photographing waders at high tide without a hide, but the weather conditions could have been better. Turnstones, Dunlin and Ringed plovers were the main attraction.

I’m an ex pro (industrial) so pedantic! The vibration didn’t bother me the video showed the birds hunkered down in the wind. I thought it was superb. A plus was that the wind probably kept the humans away. I also commend your application.

You feel like it wasn't your best day afield, Mike, but I'm happy with the footage and the learning experience. I don't do video, but I always want to know "how" when I see good productions like this. Thanks.

I liked these shots of the birds trying to deal with the wind, could almost feel it blowing. Great video, the slow days can be fun days, too! ^^

Actually the shot of the plover with the digital zoom looks sharper to me than the one with the teleconverter. Also great how you turn an unlucky session into an entertaining lesson for us. Thank you.

Thank you for those tips of using slow motion and using the digital zoom - useful! I think slow motion looks good for filming birds, as they move so fast, at actual speed it is difficult to appreciate the movements

A superb effort on what was clearly a breezy day! Obviously the video wasn’t quite what you wanted but it was more than watchable and enjoyable. Like you I’m finding folks and dogs everywhere, on beaches that were always quiet there’s always someone, I even gone to favourite spots recently and had to come home as not only is it far to busy, but you just haven’t been able to park the car. Fingers crossed for the colder weather and overseas holidays!

Amazing technology and you have applied it extremely well Mike, thank you for posting this video. I have hardly touched any video on my stills camera but I suspect that will change at some point and when I do, I will - no doubt at all - return to your recent videos to revise all the information presented.

Hi Mike, Ring plovers are great birds. They are under protection and I saw them near Castle Stalker in Scotland. A mum wandering around and then go and incubate her clutch of eggs. Very hard to see amongst the stones. But you had a windy day, well done for persevering. I hope you had a good breakfast with a well earned cuppa after that!

Great stuff Mike just had a session with shore birds this morning at Farlington Marshes near Portsmouth ! Lots around same problem as you though too much wind for decent video ! Just hope the Software can help but can't blame the Sony A1 !

I have the A1 myself, and the 200-600mm, and I was extremely surprised at the quality of the digital zoom on video. I haven’t double-checked the manual, but I think I remember that for stills this is only available for jpeg, which is a shame. Incidentally, I really appreciated that you included a session which you were less than satisfied with, especially for the info about how to make the most of the situation. Thanks Mike.

Hi Mike thx a lot for another great Video. Could you pls elaborate on the Digital zoom vs extender with the 200-600 (still photography) on a Video on its own? That would be super

hi mike, the 200-600 is a good lens but holding it is a bit not great when you got big man hands. how did you solve that ? nice video as always
@MikeLaneFRPS
@MikeLaneFRPS 2 жыл бұрын
I do not hand hold much, especially now I shoot so much video. A tripod for video is more important. When I do hand hold for flight and stills I am not finding it a problem. Big hands causes issues with small camera bodies and close fitting buttons, rather than lenses. I think my hands are big.

I really enjoyed this video of the birds dealing with the wind. I notice you are using 120 fps, US ntsc instead of PAL? I have been using 100fps for PAL, although I think 120 would be better. Do you think there are any downsides to either? Also, is 30fps better than 25fps do you think? 25fps seems jerky to me for birds. If you have done a video on this you can just point me to it. Thank you!

Hi Caroline, I wish I knew the answer. I am new to video and find these issues diffcult to understand. I know few photographers who shoot video. Most of my friends are wildlife photographers, but only take stills. When I watch nature on TV now I am aware that almost all wildlife footage is slowed down. I never noticed before shooting video. Only by slowing it down does it not look jerky. I often shoot at 60fps so I can slow it down a bit. One day I hope to get a grip of it all. Mike

Nice video as always. Can you please shed some more light on the magnification aspect you touched upon at the end?
@MikeLaneFRPS
@MikeLaneFRPS 2 жыл бұрын
I will be mentioning it in upcoming videos as I play with it, but digital cameras can crop the image so it is magnifies or appears to zoom in on the subject. Using the Sony system this can be without reducing the file size as the image is interpolated back to the full pixel count.

When you say digital zoom, are you speaking of the super35 mode that the Sony has? Sorry, nvm. Found it, lol.
@networm64
@networm64 2 жыл бұрын
Same question. And also about the "clear image zoom" that Sony cameras have and give you upto 2 times magnification in video with almost no quality loss.
