Photographing Shore Birds with FZ82 | Tips, Tricks & Rare Species
A lunchtime spent photographing wildlife is time well spent in my opinion. I was keen to get some photos of the local Oyster Catchers and a solitary Curlew I has spotted recently. Curlews are now on the red list of species whose numbers have fallen so low they are now of concern so I was pleased to see this example in seemingly health condition.
I'll also discus how I shot these images and the methods used.
Graham's Link
This was also a chance to test out a focus setting devised by Lumix expert, Graham Houghton. Here is a link to Graham's video where he explains how to set this up on your camera and see if you find it helps your photography too!

Thank you again for sharing your fabulous tutorial, especially being the panasonic fz82. Your photographs are excellent and the video footage is perfect, I almost feel I am there. Thank you again.

All video was taken handheld with the fz82 - I generally shoot in P mode for video and leave the camera to do its thing, switching back to shutter priority for the images in this instance. Thanks for watching Michael.

Cheers John, this camera will have to do for birding until I can afford a big lens and a fancier Nikon like yours 😉

I really enjoyed this video Andrew, and I mainly use my Fz80 for wildlife shoots so it was great to see what you came up with. Some superb shots there and also a good explanation of the camera's limitations. I tend to find that as you are usually shooting with a high zoom to get a sharper image I try to keep my shutter speed at 1/320s or even faster to mimimise image blur along with using burst mode as you do. I don't fix my ISO but rather use the Auto ISO mode with an ISO limit of 400 set. In good light conditions this more often than not produces good results and also the camera still does a good job at keeping to the lower ISOs. Recently I watched another nature vlogger who has suggested that "back button" focus technique has some real advantages in wildlife shots so I am going to give that a go and see how my shots come out. Keep up the fantastic videos.

Ya did a lot better than I did on the old bird photography. Not really my bag I think 🤔 😅. Trying to catch up on the videos. Nice photos ya got with the wee camera. It holds up nicely

Thanks for watching Paul and cheers for the compliment, I would class myself as an occasional bird photographer, I'm not sure I fancy sitting in a hide for several hours. Mind you, the photographers who do probably do it to escape their partners when they find out what they've spent on big lenses😀📸

Cheers for watching Peter. Oyster Catchers are fun to watch. The Curlews are sadly in decline in the UK and on the red list for species under threat, so I was pleased to grab these shots.

Love these images Andy. They definitely look clear and sharp to me and thanks for the link to Graham Houghton and his explanation. This is my favourite camera and I use it in the main to capture bird shots so I truly appreciate the advice you give us when your out using the FZ82. Cheers mate 👍

Great vid mate, never mind everyone with fancy cameras...I often dream of the ease of having a bridge again - far less messing about (and a damn sight cheaper too!)

Yeah, this one is now £330 new, but some folks spend that on filters! It worries me slightly for the future of the hobby as camera manufacturers are moving their models further out of the reach of entry-level photographers. I can understand that phones are pretty good now, but it is a wholesale cave in by camera manufacturers to concede the lower half of the market. Will youngsters even consider buying a mirror less camera in the future? This era of bridge cameras haven't had new models in years so they probably won't be replaced. Sorry, I appear to have gone off on a rant. Cheers for watching Dave. 👀

I still enjoy my FZ82, but I only take it on sunny days when I can keep the ISO down. I often take it with my Pana G80 and 100-300mm lens and shoot with the better light on the FZ82 and double the zoom, until the light starts dropping, then I switch to the G80 and sacrifice the zoom range. Sometimes that combo results in a good day out. ATB MMMD

I'm in the same boat, I have the Nikon with a 200mm len or the FZ1000 with a 400 mm, but the FZ82 has the best range.

My Kodak Z812IS from the mid-noughties was also unusable above 400 ISO (except real emergencies), but was impressive below that. I've never really shot birds seriously, but understand the logic of shooting shutter-priority with burst as the little buggas make lots of unexpected moves. Some shots to be proud of there. I have been gifted another SLR camera - Chinon CE-4 with the Chinon 50/1.9. I've got it loaded up with HP5+ but I caught some form of lurgy so trying to stay out of the cold. I have also been promised a Soviet Rangefinder but that isn't until the donor comes back from Latvia! Happy days!

Thanks for watching, I think it tends to be an issue with small sensors and their ability to cope with noise. The FZ82 has a grain that resembles film so it can work in some images. The Oyster Catchers were pretty difficult to shoot as they were constantly on the go. Your new cameras sound great, particularly the Soviet camera. I hope you get rid of the bug you've got as it sounds like we've got more severe weather on the way.

Nice shots Andrew. Considering the focal lengths and shutter speeds, these came out pretty sharp. I'd be interested to see what the images look like if you push the ISO a bit (I know you said the FZ82 struggles a bit with noise). Great to see the Curlew too - it made a great subject. 😀
@AndrewWaltonPhotography
@AndrewWaltonPhotography Жыл бұрын
Cheers Robert, yeah the FZ82 has issues with noise due to the small sensor, ISO 400 is the limit before you start to see noise in the images unfortunately.

Romain, you might want to check out these videos which might help you make up your mind kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZKpYmeto7-Mq6s and kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqLYlJKYhdqqnck It's a good beginners camera but like most cameras there are pros and cons. It is a hobbyist camera rather than a professional camera. But as you learn about photography you can upgrade your equipment later.
