Photographing wild birds with Nikon Z8 at RSPB Burton Mere

In this video I visit RSPB Burton Mere to test out my new Nikon Z8. I discuss how the Z8 performs and also test my new gimbal head. I got lots of photos of birds in flight and studies of water fowl and waders.

Lovely video Darrell. I look forward to your RSPB collaboration. Marshside is fairly local to me and it should be a good time to visit with the winter wildfowl. The RSPB is a great organisation and at a fiver a month it's a no-brainer for nature lovers, even if you don't get to the reserves much.

Nice video, do feel the Z8 owners have ben let down by Nikon by not getting the latest eye Af update. How do you find the 100-400mm?

Great video and shots. Yeah, I loved my Z6ii but now I gave the Z8 it’s in a different league. I just need to get used to the different noise and shadow capability in the Z8.

Well done Darell, another informative video. It seems that the Z8 is going to be the "go to" kit for wildlife photography. Bearing in mind you used to shoot with the 200-500mm zoom, is the 100-400mm lens long enough at 400mm for wildlife? I'm sorely tempted to chop in my well loved D500 for the Z8, just need that final nudge!!

I did a test with my 200-500 and barely noticed the lack of the extra 100 mm but could tell that the 100-400 is sharper.

Love the content. I wonder if you used a ND filter for the videos, also why didn't you wait for the Z6iii?

I had a variable ND filter to control the exposure on the clogging camera. I had been waiting for the Z8 as a replacement to my D850.

@@DarrellOakdenPhotography I have also a 2-5 stops ND filter. I'm waiting now for the Z6iii as a replacement for my D850 and Z6ii if it suits my expectations if not it will be the Z8.

Great video Darren. I’ve had a Z6ii for about 2 years and whilst it’s a great camera I am abit disappointed with the animal tracking on it and have been thinking about a z9. Don’t know whether you’ve tested a z9 but would you recommend the 8 instead as it’s cheaper? Cheers Ian

After looking at reports the z9 has a bigger battery and the vertical grip. Everything else is nearly the same.

If you put the arm of the gimbal on the right side of the lens, it is easier fo zoom and focus :)

I have tried it on both sides and I prefer it this way so I can keep my finger on the shutter and use my left hand to lock off or un lock.
