I don't doubt your technical skills in any way. But your real skills lay in finding a worthy image within that space. I doubt anyone else would look at that and think there was a photograph in it. Let alone a good photograph!

Thanks Pete, I really appreciate it. I've got square on the brain, but I'm thinking the 4x5 might be the shot. The sweeping curve of the path does something and it was an element I was trying to incorporate in the shot. All this digital computer mumbo jumbo is fine, but I'm finding more and more it's just easier to get to the final composition with an enlarger in a darkroom. We'll see how the next video works out, I might be of another opinion after 4 hours in the darkroom... :)

I have a new NEBO brand rechargeable headlamp. May be better than a flashlight? And cold weather thin fishing gloves, wind and waterproof. Winter is where you find the advantage of carbon-fiber tripods V's aluminum. Much warmer on your fingers.

That was a Black Diamond Cosmo headlamp, LOL! I just didn't take the time to put it on my head over my hat. I tried but the band was too tight and my fingers were so cold I didn't want to adjust it. My leather gloves are insulated work gloves and I like them because they go on and off fast. They are usually good to about 30F, below that and they start not being enough. I was using my 3 year old Gitzo 1245 Mountaineer. Carbon fiber is the way to go for sure! Photography isn't really all that bad, even the 4x5 in the cold. The thing that makes it just too much is doing the video as well. Cheers!

Technical question. Is comparing a 4x5 contact sheet to the Sony digital image really "fair" towards the image? What I mean is: The real difference would be visible only, when enlarging the 4x5 to its limit and comparing with a printed image of the Sony streched to the same size. Just asking. I have now experience whatsoever with the 4x5 format. Anyway, the picture looks great!
@EdwardMartinsPhotography
@EdwardMartinsPhotography 8 күн бұрын
Thanks! I don't know about "what's fair." :) I do know that the 4x5 (3x3 inch negative with the crop) enlarged to 8x8 inches looks better than the Sony 24x24mm (FF cropped square about 40 mp's) printed to 8x8 inches. And I would make an educated guess that both printed to 30x30 inches the 4x5 negative would still look better. Having said all that, the resolution of both is more than enough. the only thing I wish the Sony, or any digital bayer sensor camera did better was get the subtle tones right. It doesn't look bad by itself, and actually looks great, but when compared to a real film image the tones are slightly off. And not something that is really correctable, or that you would want to bother with.

@@EdwardMartinsPhotography Thanks for the reply and explanation. That was actually, what I had in mind. By "fair" I just meant to say it's doing the 4x5 Kind of an injustice if you compare the mere contact sheet with a digital print judging both as equal while the large formats strength comes into play when it's getting enlarged - as you confirmed. I was Just at odds for a Moment how to put that into words in English.

@ No worries. Since I last replied to you I have found a way to get the digital files tonality closer in line with what film natively gives you. A lot of what people are looking for is "built into" film, but film is a lot harder to implement. Digital is a lot harder to make look great, but it's a lot easier to shoot a lot of just adequate looking photos. What you gain on the straightaways you lose on the roundabouts... as the British say.

Seems to me that the larger the image capture, the less it needs to be multiplied to final print size. Fine focus detail becomes less fine as it is multiplied. Therefore, I think, the bigger capture size is going to be better. 8x10 , or 11 x 14, the sky is the limit.

That is part of it. A big part of it is using a 210mm lens as a "normal" lens. It just sees the world differently than a 60mm lens on 35mm (full frame or 35mm film.) And as you say, the 4x5 probably looks about the same at say 30x30 inches as the FF does at 8x8 inches... What is most surprising is that it does still look better at 8x8 inches.

@ We are pretty much down the road of digital everything, enough to know what it's like. And the further we go the more apparent it becomes that we are analogue beings. Digital is alien to us.
