Your “mistakes” are better than my photos taken with intention 😂. Great set of images.

Thanks 👍 Appreciate your comment and it just shows that they were mistakes in regards to my needs but they are good piece of gear that can let you take superb photos if you get familiar with them and if your skill level is decently high

For me my 70-200/2.8 is basically my "Swiss army knife". My work horse and "does it all" lens. I work as staff photographer at a zoo. So I work a lot with animals at a medium distance, some times a little closer, too. So 70-200mm are the perfect range. And for critters which are further away I got my 200-500. But I do get what you mean! Different lenses for different shooting styles. You have to think about purchasing a lens whether it fits your style before you buy it :)

Completely agree, I have the hole grail range of lenses and the 70-200/2.8 is the first lens I always grab.

Great advice on all parts, we have all made similar oversights, not knowing the requirement of the job or new hobby makes us want the best tool we can justify to ourselves, not always being the best choice in the end. The best tool is the one with you have with you at all times. I've found myself reaching for the smallest and lightest kit more often, also not packing a second or third lens to avoid the weight.

Good to see some of your older photos.. and yes the gear mistakes are a real tricky issue.. I’ve blown hundreds of dollars myself on wrong things and come full circle to have a very simple setup, but the learning is necessary

Great talk, i think we are so consumed with what everyone is creating and trying to make the same while hurting our finances- and even sadly not getting the look they get from the gear they have which just turns out to be disappointing at the end. using what you have and lookig at what you need to create is very crucial in what gear you need to invest in. love the photos on this set ! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽

Very helpful. I am in the process of trying to establish my own channel online, and have made some of the mistakes you ve mentioned in this video. I think everyone should utilize what they have and make the best out of it, not just buy a piece of gear because others have it. Thank you for sharing

These points resonate so well to me. I’m trading in 3 lenses tomorrow because they are all either 1. Too big and heavy. 2. Just not the focal length of choice for me anymore. I realised some of these have been sitting in my drawer for over three years. Fortunately I did find my favourite focal length through actually getting out there and shooting a lot! Now I can only focus on that one focal length and any other gear that directly helps my shooting style

This video provided immense value for me. The segment emphasizing, "I got this job, so I need this gear" and not the other way around, struck a chord, especially considering I overspent around 10k on equipment I believed was necessary. Now, I find myself in a situation where I can't generate income from it due to a lack of experience and doing completely something else.

I recently caved and bought the 40mm 2.5 G, because I have a soft spot for compact lenses and really love the slightly tighter fov compared to a 35 for street. the issue however, was the literal suitcase of mistakes that rarely get used leisurely because of size, weight or being specific tools for specific jobs (like a 14mm or 90mm) the issue is, in my opinion, that cameras rarely come with kit lenses that scratch the itch of having several focal lengths covered, while youtube tech channels will constantly advertise lenses that people will want to try even though they don't need them. the notion of "start out on a prime lens" is mostly false imo, a good quality zoom like a 24-105 f4 will satisfy most, with the option to pick a favorite focal length within that range and buy a fast prime to correspond with it later being the safer and smarter thing to do. great images btw! although I put my 70-180 up for sale, your gallery reminds me of why I got it: lightweight enough to carry around and the beautiful candid street shots you can get without being obtrusive. for wedding or event work I just end up using the 35-150 though, and an 85 1.4 plus the option of aps-c crop is faster, almost has the same reach and is more compact than the 70-180 in the end...

Agree with the 70-200mm f2.8. It was my first RF lens and enjoyed it for a bit but realised it wasn't fitting my intended aesthetic, plus the weight made it not fun to bring around-which led to me taking less photos :( Switched to the 50mm f1.2 and now super happy with it!

Definitely fell in this trap as well; now I just got my dji pocket 3 with one lens and it works perfectly. Learnt from my mistakes but it's okay, I keep my other lenses at home and try to use them from time to time.

Good stuff. I've gone through a lot of gear, not only as I find out what kind of gear I like, but also while finding what kind of photography I like. I'm almost there now, having settled on a few primes and 1 telephoto zoom. I don't see the money lost along the way as a loss, but more of a rental fee. I rarely dislike a lens, the only time I move them on is if I simply don't use them enough. So yeah, I might have lost £200 on a lens, but I owned it for a year, took it on a handful of trips and generally enjoyed using it, I simply can't justify keeping ~£1000 tied up in something that gets used 4 times a year. In the end I essentially rented it for £16 per month, which is pretty darn reasonable.

Other than me planning to become KZbinr, I relate to all these, especially me having to spend my money on this rather hobby than job/main gig. I overidolized prime, too much even, so when I bought my Sigma 35mm f1.4 a step up from my nifty fifty, it felt heavenly different and I found all sort of things I could do with it, pros, cons, and its limitations. But the main thing is, like you said I have this job, I need this lens, and not the other way around. Now a proud owner of 35 and 105 🫡.

Your pictures are SOOO NICE! Thanks to the last point, I'm debating whether to get the Fuji 16mm f2.8 or 16mm f1.4 (some says it is one of the best lens fuji ever made) but the whole reason I'm even looking at these lenses instead of a zoom is because of size, the 2.8 is way smaller and lighter. I had always lean more towards getting the 2.8 but videos and reviews online tells me that the 1.4 is way better. Thanks to your video, I think I'll get the 2.8 which suits what i want and save some $$$ as well 🤩

The one regret I did as a photographer was selling my old 70-200 f4 back in 2020 cause I need money during covid and thought “I don’t use it enough I won’t miss it” But each year I kept missing it more and more So this 2024 I got the 70-200 f/4 again, (I do wish I saved up a bit more and got the is ver atleast)

Those 35mm f1.4 shots are amazing. You really should use it more often. That's the one lens I am really missing. I currently shoot a lot of 28mm but I would love having a 35mm with really shallow depth of field.

✨ Great points. I have experienced a couple of these myself also. My main regrets are: I thought I needed full frame and many lenses, but I discovered I left it at home often for its size. Now, even though I still use full frame Canon gear for some more intentional situations, I shoot mostly the GR on a daily basis. Maybe I will regret this in the future. I thought I needed the fastest aperture to avoid bad low light images, I discovered my images were worse in my taste if they missed focus than if they were in focus and had noise. I thought I wanted the film look, but committing to a trend via gear means I can't undo it later if I grow out of the look. Using old FD lenses, pro mists, buying Fujifilm to shoot their jpegs were very fun and aesthtically meaningful at the time, but now I can't go back and recover a clean image. I have images from my summer in Kyoto that I wish didn't have an hazy bloom to them now.

Great video buddy! Summary is to only buy gear when you want to solve a problem, and when you look to solve that problem, make sure you fully understand what is important to you (e.g lightweight over image quality). In reality though, you will still get things wrong… my current one is that I bought the Sigma 24-70 F2.8 for my Sony because I needed a 1 lens setup for those focal lengths that were better IQ and better at low light than my 24-240… did all the research, bought it (over a year ago), and it turns out zooms the opposite way from all my Sony lenses. Knowing that I would have bought something else, but for now I can’t justify selling it, even though it causes me to miss shots and frustrates me a lot! Shoulda gone in a shop to try it first…

The drone was my biggest mistake, I picked up a DJI Mini (1st gen) a few weeks before the 2nd gen was introduced. The price dropped drastically. Also the local drone regulations turned out to be stricter than I was expecting after reading the EU guidelines.
