I have to honest and say that I’m watching fewer and fewer channels now, and restricting myself to just a few where the content is refreshing and inspiring. This is one and The Art of Photography is another. We as viewers are shaping what is served to us. We might complain about ‘all the content being the same’ but if that’s what we are watching, the algorithm will continue to serve it up. In a way it’s up to us to influence what is promoted. It also calls for confidence on the part of the content creators to put out material that is innovative and interesting. We need to support these people.

Totally agree with all channels mentioned. Scott French is another for me. It seems that the dilemma described mimics what I experience in photography. Maybe it's best to just focus on our passions - our followers may be fewer, but the experiences will be richer. So go deep rather than wide, perhaps.

There are a few names in this comment and responses, of other channels that I know well. Alex's approach of art school lecture type and motivational videos totally stay away from "tools". To me, Alex does great from the start of his channel. Forbes discusses tools in between 80% and 90% of his content and to me that's a waste of time. While he has turned pages of some photography as art books, his own photography boils down to elevated snapshots. Simon - very knowledgeable in the technical side, but could be more structured in the sense of breaking lessons down for different levels of prior knowledge. I did photography school in the late 70s - the curriculum is an applied/vocational BSc today - and from the general technical photography point of view there's nothing new. As most fluencers do not have that background, I see most of them making errors at the deeper levels. After 10 years well-paid professional photography, I went back to university and studied a.o. a full Bachelor/Master curriculum of software engineering with AI, which I also taught at those levels. So digital photography has no secrets, although I must admit it took me some time to figure out how stupid it really is. We all are bothered most by the Bayer paradigm. And most "luminance noise" or "colour noise" that fluencers talk about merely is inadequate or failed raw processing - they should call the noise "Bayer noise". DxOMark state they test "sensors" - not they don't. The videos in YT generally are at the wrong level of abstraction and make very fundamental mistakes. Imagine a Ytoober in their video showing two images in Lightroom Classic and saying of the left one, that it is "raw" while the right one had some AI Denoise applied. They don't know their shit and actually have never seen a raw image "as is". Happens too many times in most "tool" focused videos. Simon is on the best side, not perfect. Sean presents his videos as a sermon in a church. And next to the preaching tone, there also is a sadness in his tone. I am allergic to sermons and do not need the sadness. Sorry. (Sean has been a minister in a church community, by the way, I discovered later.) If you are familiar with art history - painters, sculptors, architects - then which of these fluencer people in YT today will have their photographs hanging in a museum of art? If that is not your ambition as a student of their lessons, then you can learn more, faster, by spending time out there shooting. A fool with a tool is still a fool. And I hasten to add that a pro with inappropriate tools also is a fool. Idiots waste my time with "1.8 is not professional" and then "I need 1.4" or "1.2". Baloney and a silly excuse to not shoot images.

The channels I keep watching are the ones with presenters I find interesting as people. Without KZbin I wouldn't be able to easily find ideas about photography from all across the globe. KZbin is a fabulous resource, but to get the best from it, don't sit back and let it serve up what it wants to show you, use an external search engine to look for the type of content you want to see.

Alex, your channel is one of the rare ones out there that I've kept watching over the years. I've pretty much stopped watching gear reviews and how-to's long ago and crave depth in thought and discourse, which is what I rely on you to deliver. Thank you! Depth will always be a narrower audience in any hobby-even profession, because gear and technical are accessible from day 1 of having interest-and there's a lot of people who have interest and aspirations. For better or for worse, aspirations drive sales, which subsidizes the cost of gear for all because that market segment is sizeable for any interest. That being said, depth is gold, and you're definitely delivering it. Thanks again! 🙏

Hi Alex - you can't fix the algorithm - don't try. Views and the measures that KZbin uses are not something to chase. Repeating your message is important, and it's also important to remember that we live in an edited world. No matter how good anyone is in taking pictures, choosing what to show and what not to show is an essential skill. Great pictures are a distillation of the captured and the published. How to distil our myriad of captures is truly important and that process will never be boring. Don't worry about account views. Please keep making the videos. Thanks for the great work. Mike

Hi Alex, I rarely comment, but you really moved me - congratulations! A mature , but beginner photographer ... yadda yadda... i can comment at this point that first - all of us need to let photography go through us. Technology, art... all of it. During the process we start to express ourselves through photography. Then, everything depends a lot about what is moving us: Money? Fame? Competitiveness? Looking at all the photography related videos - all of them swing between technology and art. Naturally. Two aspects of the photography. You are the only one I found so far clearly addressing: Expressing our own personalities through photography. I find you and the CamerasLensesEtc the opposites on the spectrum and I thank you both!

I have to agree that there is a lot of regurgitated content on KZbin. But what has been great about your channel, and why I have chosen not just to watch your channel but interact with you, is that you filled a void in this space. There aren't enough channels like this one, or Tatiana Hoppers, Sean Tuckers, etc. But in the long run that can put you in a lead position. I do enjoy other channels for different reasons...I'm not a landscape photographer but I watch James Popsys because I think he's funny....I don't shoot much medium format film but I watch Kyle Mcdougall's because I love his process. This is all a long winded way of saying I think you're in a perfect spot to do what you do. The algorithm sucks...but when I want contemplative, engaging content I come here! 👍

The reason I watch your content is because you push me out of my previously acquired comfort zone. I am a point in my life when I can and want to dedicate time to an artistic endeavor. Photography makes me feel good because, for me, it combines the tech side, which I find easier to develop, with the art of creating something. The later is the challenging part and that's what your content is helping me develop. It's painful and exciting at the same time. Keep it coming.

Your channel is so refreshing to watch. I love that you dig into the why of photography. The gear channels get as exhausting as a time share salesman. They can be useful when I am actually shopping for some kit but once that decision is made they are useless to me. This content, I will happily watch again to see if there's something new I didn't catch the first time, or if I just wasn't in the mood to hear it the first go round.

When I finally started to pursue my lifelong interest in photography a couple years ago I came to KZbin to learn as much as I could. At first I enjoyed watching some of the technical mumbo jumbo but it was because I didn’t know anything about things like the exposure triangle. Once I started to have a good understanding of the technical side of photography that stuff became boring for me. I found your channel pretty early on in my search for knowledge and it has remained my favorite. While I also enjoy other channels, it’s yours that I always suggest to other people. I really enjoyed the first video’s I came across because it was so interesting to learn about other photographers. I’ve always felt that you could learn so much from those who came before you. This channel has always felt unique and personal to me. It has had its own soul and didn’t feel so generic like all the others out there. Your video’s feel more like a one on one conversation than just someone spouting flashy attention grabbing words. This channel is more philosophical and goes deeper into what photography is. Keep being you and doing what you do. It’s the uniqueness you have brought to the channel that has kept the same people continuing to follow you video after video. Another thing that I have loved about your channel that seems different compared to others is that when watching yours I don’t feel lesser than. I feel like I could sit down with you and have a conversation as an equal even though you clearly have the time and experience I don’t. I respect the kindness you show to everyone. Thank you for taking the time to make these video’s.

One thing I do like about you is that you do not do gear reviews. There are so many KZbinrs who started off with a photography channel that just turned into a review channel. I do not blame them whatsoever either as I would do the same thing as well but still gets annoying sometimes when you are watching a video and then it hits you "Oh this is an ad for a new lens". Wont name names but I am sure anyone reading this could name a name and it would be a yup, that one.

I love the alternative, more thoughtful perspective of your videos. It’s the philosophy rather than a how-to guide, and that is refreshing. I agree that the algorithms of KZbin is pushing video makers into a homogeneous approach where very one ends up doing the same thing. Seven great tips for better photos! The three things you must know! What professional photographers don’t want you to know! You need to watch this video to be a worthwhile human being! All of it false and none of it does credit to the video creators. They end up boxing themselves in rather than expanding our experience.

And I like Thomas Heaton’s cheerful approach to life. I watch yours and Sean Tuckers for thoughtful insights and introductions to great photography from great photographers. For the rest, I search for a specific topic that I want to learn or brush up on, usually post processing topics. Being a professional for all my life the past 53 years, and familiar with your "photo school", I must agree with most of the comments here. I do not watch or subscribe to any other channels really and agree that they are boring, as suggested. The only exception is most of the B&H videos on certain topics are very good. What I would like to see you discuss is some "in depth" discussions about contemporary photography and conceptual photography. Something that, to my knowledge, is not always well understood, but important for us to understand.

I’m amazed at how, with the rising cost of film, so many photographers are “wasting” expensive film on test shots, boring landscape photographs that have been taken thousands of times before and generally the same kind of photos as hundreds of other photographers. Personally, I’m hoping to concentrate on taking photos of people - portraits or candid street shots - because when there’s a person or several people in a photograph, there’s a story there. Locations don’t change much over time. People change constantly.

Thanks Alex for saying what needed to be said. I watch your videos because I like to hear your ideas and opinions, and you have introduced me to different aspects of photography other than gear reviews and post processing techniques (both of which have their place). I have started to notice a trend with content creators trying to encourage engagement with comments and asking questions of their audience to gain traction with the algorithms. I am always disappointed when I compare views with likes. It seems viewers just can't be bothered to click the like button which seems to me to show a lack of appreciation of the work and thought which goes into producing a video from a content creator to whom they have subscribed. Anyway, have a great 2024 and keep provoking my thoughts about using my camera.

I basically learned photography from watching KZbin, so there was a time when videos with tips about camera settings and techniques for using Lightroom etc were useful, but then, like you, I found Ted and appreciated that he was doing something different, and his reverence for the photographers he introduced inspired me to further my photographic journey by studying the masters. At some point, I found Sean and Jamie and they inspired me to look at photography through a more philosophical lens. Somewhere along the way, a video of yours popped up, and I have been a devoted follower ever since, though I am as guilty as others of not leaving comments even though your videos always inspire me, and what you say always resonates. By now, though, there are very few photography channels left on KZbin that interest me, and yes, there seems to be an endless stream of new, young, and I'm sure well-intentioned, photographers putting out slick content in the style of Peter McKinnon (though nobody so far seems to have improved on what he does) whose goal seems to be to grow their channels and promote themselves, rather than engage people with straight talk. And, I guess if you get big enough, you reach a point where it is impossible to respond to all the comments, anyway, and inevitably you become inherently distanced from the very people you perhaps originally wanted to connect with. Which makes me think that a small, but devoted following might be better than a large one if the goal is interaction, and indeed with many channels, like Ted's, I have mostly lost intereest as they seem to have moved on from from their original intentions for the reasons you cite here. So, in a selfish way, I almost hope that your channel will not grow more because I want you to keep doing what you're doing, and not succumb to making videos that feed the algorithm. I suspect you are already too big to respond to all the comments you get, but I feel like you still might take the time to at least read them. For the most part, I've moved on from KZbin and mostly just listen to podcasts now for my photography fix, but I will continue to follow you, Tatiana Hopper, Tin House Studio, the Crit House (I hope that one doesn't get too big, either) maybe a couple others. Reading through the comments here, it is clear that there IS a community of photographers who appreciate what you're doing, so I hope reading through these comments is confirmation for you, regardless of what the algorithms might think, that you are doing the right thing. 471 meaningful comments (as of this counting) from thoughtful photographers seems far more valuable than the 1000,000 likes and 50,000 generic "Great video" comments that the latest flashy channels might be getting.

You're right. I often watch good videos and don't comment because I don't feel that just saying "Good video, thanks for sharing" is contributing anything useful. But actually, quite apart from encouraging the content creator, it would be helping the algorithm surface the content that I most enjoy, like your channel. New Year resolution: leave more positive comments, even when I have nothing substantial to say.

I have been with you since the beginnings, I signed up because you are different and stand out from the crowd, no boring technical specs or GAS discussion, you are diving into the art, not the gear... keep going, you are on the right track, enjoy every video. And yes, it feels like we sit and have a chat in the pub/coffee place having a decent face to face discussion 😊

I agree. I've been looking for something different lately. It's hard though. I feel every video is the same. I enjoy watching your videos. They are different from what I see everyday, and you do a great job. You are enjoyable to listen to, and watch. Thank you for what you do. Never quit or give up. 😁

I have been photographing for many years and love my time with a camera in my hand. Your see your videos as a conversation and often follow up on thee subject you present. Keep,it up. Do what you feel like doing. It keeps fresh ideas coming and that is a good thing.

Your channel has inspired me in a myriad of different ways from encouraging confidence as a new hobbyist to remembering photography is supposed to be meaningful and pleasurable for OURSELVES FIRST. Our expression is unique, and just go for it! I watch your videos all the time on my tv, and being able to comment is not available in that format. Thank you for your time and thoughts and energy - please know you are making ripples.

What I love about your channel is that you make it acceptable to do photography in different ways. You talk about other photographers and the way that they see. You focus on the creative end, the parts that you will never find in a book. Technical topics aren't a big deal because you are more interested in the essence of photography. Keep it going!

Thank you for this video. You're the third or fourth KZbinr I subscribe to who has expressed similar sentiments this month. Many channels I used to enjoy have become gear of the minute and precious little about what said gear can bring to photography. I now know a lot of lenses that will take sharp pictures of brick walls or throw almost everything out of focus, and cameras that will fill a memory card in seconds. Anyway, you prompted me to go through my subscriptions and see which ones had offered me anything about photography in the past six months to a year. About half got culled.

Keep doing what you do the way you do it Alex. I look forward to your "matter of fact armchair" chats on photographic art and photographers.as if we are sitting having a coffee together sharing our interest. I've been taking photographs for many years, from a young age and just enjoy it, and i enjoy listening and learning from your relaxed conversation. Looking forward to seeing you in 2024. Have a good one!

Sharpness is key. My favourite photos are often out of focus. I know what you mean, when you skip the technical part, because I know it does not matter much as it is easy to learn. The word "Eye" in the name of your channel tells it all. Some say I do have some repetitive style in my photographs but I am never satisfied myself.

Firstly, I have to say that your channel was a refreshing discovery. It’s like having a one-on-one discussion with a friend or trusted teacher. I have found myself watching less and less photography videos for many of the reasons you have mentioned. On other channels, I typically scrub through the B-roll. I don’t need to see drone footage of every single hike a landscape photographer goes on, and when I see footage of them walking down a trail or crossing through a gate on the countryside, all I can think is, “I wonder how much time it took for them to set up their camera and take it back down just for that one shot?”, instead of thinking about the topic of the video. Please keep up your amazing work. Your videos are probably the only ones that I don’t fast forward through.

What brought me to your channel and what I love about your videos is you discuss the thought processes and ideas of photography rather than the technicalities. I see too many videos on KZbin talking about what camera and/or lens I should use and how I should compose my photos instead of discussing the nature of capturing an image or idea and what drives us to photography in the first place. I really appreciate the relaxed, down-to-earth way you discuss photography. It inspires me and gives me something to think about as an amateur photographer. Thank you!

Couldn't agree more. Go out take a photo, talk about the settings, show us the (mostly mediocre) photo and drone on about the light. Oh and let's not forget the close up B roll of opening a gate.

Your comments about authenticity really hit the nail on the head. Conversing and sharing real perspectives and ideas is how we move forward. Endless streams of "how to's" throw, me at least, off balance and make me question my photographic methodologies, and then I lose track of the why and keep falling back to the how. I've been photographing for over 30 years. I know how! Finding inspiration in a new project and staying true to a vision is where the challenge lies.
@warwickarnold242010 ай бұрын
Thank you for your fireside chats! You've really hit the nail on the head with this essay. Over the years, I've pored over the how-to channels to hone my technical skills but longed for a broader view of the photographic art and aesthetics. I enjoy AOP's photographer series and book reviews but switch off whenever Ted starts stroking his Leica. As much as I admire the work of certain landscape photographers, bar those with the "distant human figure for scale" cliché...quick, pass me that clone stamp! - life is too short to watch 30 mins of one trudging up a misty mountainside for few fleeting moments of insight. So, ever since I stumbled upon your channel (the algorithm god smiled that day), I have devoured your content - not a minute wasted. You can go as deep and meaningful as you dare - and keep your loyal audience. Here's to The Big Picture.

Great discussion :) It feels like these days everything has kind of become a copy of a copy of a copy. And maybe not because it is the creators’ wishes to do so, but because these platforms have now become so much algorithm-driven that people feel like the only way to be seen is to fit this pre-determined mold of whatever is trending.

I've had the best part of a year away from photography. I stopped finding it rewarding (emotionally). I think it was largely because I had drifted into trying to do what others had done before, rather than relying on my own impulses. I have an adequate amount of kit, and I know the basics of using it. Anthing I don't know in that regard I at least know how to look it up. What's harder to find is help with treading my own path and your content is about the best I've found for that. See you next year - Enjoy the Holiday!

Thanks for your thoughts, Alex. Speaking as a non-creator for the moment, I can say that I hate YT’s interface. I can’t reliably exclude keywords or channels. I can click Exclude on a channel time after time and yet the channels return, like YT is saying “You will watch this whether you want to or not”. It’s not working for the audience either.

There are very few channels I consistently watch - yours, AOP and Sean Tucker. I like the laidback, conversational format of your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I’ve been looking into starting a channel of my own. I watch those “10 things to always do…” videos. I’m not that flashy, b-roll, music (that they paid a ton of money for), “something on the screen needs to change every 6 seconds to keep your audience’s attention” kind of person. My channel will be about photography, creativity and inspiration. I’ve been scribbling down topics. But, the “how to” videos that you mentioned are all listed as backups for times I am short on ideas. I know they are white noise (unless I come up with a revolutionary take on the rule of thirds). So, thank you for looking into the camera and pointing it out. I am going to stay true to myself. And, I’m glad you have stayed true to yourself! Thank you 😊

Hello Alex! As you’ve mentioned, some others in so-called photography channels occupy themselves with reviewing - “pitching”? - gear and techniques that makes them resemble a cacophony of one another, sort of a bazaar for photographers. I must say that if I have to choose one word to explain what attracts me to you and your channel, it is: “honesty”. Your honesty in conveying to your viewers what is the intended message of a photograph - or the photographer. Keep up the great work, and an early happy 2024 to you!

Your explanation of what and why KZbin serves up content is so accurate…and sad. Like you, if I try something new or different, my feed becomes inundated with similar content. Some hold my interest for a while, but most are just distractions. In the long run, for me at least, the “gold standard” has become my commitment through hitting that Subscribe button. That way I have a known starting point with a quality product in the offing. Thank you for producing video content that I will choose to continue to watch. And thanks for the reminder that creators of good work deserve more than just a thumbs up. I will be sure to let them know that I enjoy their work.

Hi Alex, I started watching you tube videos to help me learn more skills in doing my various hobbies. I didn't immediately start with photography videos, and only started when one came up on my feed. The first photography video I watched was indeed about composition, and I have watched a load on the subjects you have mentioned. Sharpness, Aperture, Gear!!!!, and all of the others have been dominant in my watching until the last year or so. The sameness of many of these videos, no matter the polish of the creator, have become boring. I now don't even watch quite a lot of these videos, because it feels all the same. I came across one of your videos about a year ago and was struck by the message. I love the way you present the message of "Don't get caught up in what others think". This was a revelation for me. It suddenly occurred to me that if I found a photo attractive and I liked it, others will too, but more importantly, it's my photography, not other people's. I am a landscape and wildlife photographer mainly, so I don't watch all of your videos. I am a subscriber though, because I enjoy the ones I do watch. I often find inspirational content watching you present the work of photographers you find interesting and appealing. I learn a great deal from those videos, and I thank you for going about the creation of content on photography in perhaps a little different way than some of your peers. Keep doing what you are doing. Keep drawing attention to other photographer's work. Keep discussing the more thought-provoking subjects. I will continue to watch while you do. Thank you.

I am an analog photographer, shooting film and printing in the darkroom. I noticed in the last few weeks a huge number of newer youtube channels devoted to film, very few of whom print in the darkroom, and generally the subject matter is the same old same old. Most are not experienced photographers, and a lot like to tell the world how they screwed up their exposure. I appreciate your channel and Ted Forbes' channel very much. I am more interested in the art of photography than how to select my shutter speed and aperture.
